OT: G.O.A.T Singers
With Eminem, that brings up the question, is this top 3 singers, or top 3 muscial artists?
I'm pretty sure I've never heard Eminem sing.
I guess this brings up the question of what is the definition of singing? Spoken word to music could be considered that I guess. That would make William Shatner a singer too.
I didn't question his talent. Just if he can be called a "singer".
Speech to song illusion is a real thing though. Michigan Daily had an article a couple months ago about Mr. Brightside that mentioned it. I don't think anyone would say that Brandon wasn't singing in that song.
I guess that could apply to rap artists as well.
She had a hard time saying that Eminem is not a singer, but feels like he is one of the few rap artists that is doing it well enough to fall into that category.
So, you win. Eminem is a singer.
has to be included if you add Shatner: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9NSpAdGxgU
....modern day poets.
If they had to be real "singers".....well.....let's just say Jay Z would have 100 problems;)
A singer can elicit emotion through song even if there is little meaning, by creating great music.
like, "da, doo, doo do, da daa da da, is all I have to say to you" or basically any opera you've heard (unless you hear fluent Italian). However, you can also have singers who are better poets than singers but they make really good music at the same time so they get a pass:"like a complete unkown, like a rolling stone".
On the other hand, IMO a hip hop artist must deliver the message to elicit the response; therefore, like a poet, the great ones design the rhymes and fit the music around them.
"cause every time I stop it seems you're stuck, as soon as you try to step off you self distruct
I came to overcome before I'm gone by showing and proving and letting knowledge be born
then after that I live forever. You disagree? You say never? Then follow me
from century to cenury, you'll remember me In history, not mystery or a memory"
2. Paul McCartney
3. Chris Cornell
disappointed this didn't link to him singing in "Hudson Hawk" with Danny Aiello?
I can't believe the greatest vocal instrument hasn't been mentioned yet:
Eddie Vedder FTW.
The fact that he's still this good is what amazes me.
If he didn't say anything, it would still be mindblowing, but his lyricism is almost as good as his voice, and that's what makes him on another level of great.
Freddie Mercury is a VERY close second. Just incredible talent. But Eddie Vedder edges him out with just a little more raw emotion. Nobody has put more emotion into their singing.
Robert Plant, Chris Cornell, Sarah McLachlan, Whitney Houston, and Axl Rose are all also welcome in the discussion IMO, but they don't come close to Eddie and Freddie.
I saw Pearl Jam a few years ago and while they were as good as it gets and the show was great, I always wish I saw them back in the early 90's when Eddie Vedder was quite literally insane jumping off of balconies.
when they 'opened' for Smashing Pumpkins and Red Hot Chili Peppers - in a bldg that used to be a Kroger
best singers female: Elizabeth Fraser - Cocteau Twins, Aretha Franklin, Ann Wilson, Tina Turner, Annie Lennox & Nina Simone
best male singers: Marvin Gaye, Sam Cooke, Bowie, Sinatra, Mercury, Roy Orbison, Daltrey, Plant, Vedder, RJ Dio, Sting, Cornell
2. Freddie Mercury
3. Ella Fitzgerald, kicking it old school y’all
Stevie
for Ella, at last.
No one has ever compared, but I would inclue Pavoratti and UM Grad Jessye Norman on the list.
You wanna go old school, go Mama Cass.
Good list though.
That sounds like a you problem tbh.
I (and many) can understand him fine.
It doesn't matter anyway becaue as I said: If he didn't say anything, it would still be magnificent, but then you actually listen to what he's saying, and you see his amazing lyricism as well!
See here, he doesn't say a word, but it's still incredible:
Adele is possibly the best true singer I have ever heard. Unfortunately she can't seem to find the right song writing team. Outside of "Rolling in the deep" and "Hello", I find her songs to be crap.
that her songs are crap. And she can really belt. She just doesn't do anything for me just don't feel her. Maybe she needs to write something herself.
.....waaaay to broad a category.
Heck, none of us have probably even heard those three girls sing, but I'm sure it was something.
Now best rock vocalist of all time, you're list makes sense, no matter how wrong.
For Chris Cornell?
