Gerry Dinardo: "Jim Harbaugh is all over the map"

Submitted by Bluey on

Comments originated from an interview with a Nebraksa radio station:

“I think Jim’s kind of all over the map,” DiNardo says.

When pressed on his “all over the map” description of Harbaugh, DiNardo makes valid points.

“Well, what offense is he going to run? Who’s calling the plays?” DiNardo asks. “Is (Ole Miss transfer quarterback) Shea Patterson, who’s a spread guy — are they going to put Shea into the pro formation or are they going to take the pro formation and make it a spread formation for Shea?”

Michigan often has been a mess at quarterback since 2015, Harbaugh’s first season there.

What’s more, “They’ve had how many different co-offensive coordinators?” DiNardo says. “Who’s doing what? I mean, it’s a pretty simple question: Who’s calling the plays? Except that’s not a simple question in Ann Arbor. The answer is convoluted. …

“I was on the sideline and watched the Outback Bowl,” he adds, referring to Michigan’s 26-19 loss to an 8-4 South Carolina team. “It doesn’t look like a well-oiled machine to me."

I mean, just take it from a guy with a 59-76 head coaching record

Add O'Korn's misses throughout the rest of the OSU game--including the one with under 2:30 to go, when he had a couple of recivers wide open.  But somehow, Harbaugh is clueless?  "What's YOUR deal?"

I was respoding to message #53, which said that Harbaugh looks "clueless," and you jumped in.  I don't know why you believe that overthrowing a wide-open receiver for what would have been a TD is meaningless.  O'Korn continually missed the mark like that in the game.  And you also failed to recognize that O'Korn failed to execute late in the game--turning what should have been a big play, with a chance to go ahead with time running out, into an INT.  "What's YOUR Deal?"

Not clueless. Seems to have woken up a bit. But he deserves all flak for the still sorry state of having no tackles. Cannot blame it on the Newsome injury, because there's NOTHING behind him. His first few years people were screaming about why all the guards and no tackles and Runyan is a guard, and JBB was terrible. They had three years now to get some tackles and still they accumulate guards. Now they seem to have some in the pipeline but it's a good two years too late. They seemed to recruit all guards and then kick them out to T, rather than recruit all tackles and kick some inside.

This is really dumb and you should feel bad. The hot take of not having a QB by year 3 is extremely played out on this board. It is extremely rare for freshman and sophomore QBs to set the world on fire, so you’re basically bitching about Hoke’s QBs and blaming it on Harbaugh

Just so I’m sure what you’re talking about, you are referencing the QB position only, right? You’re suggesting Harbaugh isn’t a good QB coach because he couldn’t make a freshman or a redshirt freshman play better? I know you’ve basically become a troll, but you saying “year 3” over and over again doesn’t change the fact that the QBs on the team when Harbaugh took over were Speight and Morris, with Malzone being recruited by Hoke. That means those 3 QBs is what he started out with, and he has gotten 28 wins in his 3 years, more than every other B10 team not named OSU or Wisconsin. But we are all fucking delusional because we understand that freshmen and sophomores don’t usually play well enough to get teams to the playoffs? Kindly fuck off with your shitty hot takes

The QBs were Kelly Bryant(a junior), Baker Mayfield(a red shirt senior, heisman, 1st pick in the NFL draft), a sophomore(Jalen Hurts) who played poorly and was replaced by a freshman and Jake Fromm who had two 1st round running backs on his team, a 1st round LT, and an exceptional receiving core with tons of experience. I mean Brandon Peters would have been replaced by Fromm too. It's not coaching there, that dude is just above and beyond. He replaced a five star starter who had a year of playing time experience ahead of him. You guys are making it seem like it's all freshman who made it to the playoff. That's not even close to true. Bryant sat for two years behind Watson. Mayfield was a multi year starter. Hurts rode his defense and one of the best wide receivers in college football and still was replaced because he's about on par with Brandon Peters. I imagine Peters could have done as well as Hurts if placed on the same Alabama team.

You’re using the exceptions and acting like that is the norm. Those three teams did it, therefore Harbaugh is a shitty QB coach. You just have awful hot takes with no actual analysis. Did those 3 teams replace 90% of the offense around those QBs? We’re those young QBs forced to start multiple games after the starter was injured? You keep saying the same thing without any context and expecting people to just ignore anything but “year 3.” As I said, you have shitty hot takes and should feel bad about being stupid.

People like you like to ignore the fact that our returning starter, Speight, was just as bad as the other 2 QBs that played behind him (Speight with 54% completion rate, OKorn with 54%, Peters with 53%). Harbaugh recognized that he had a QB problem in 2015 and brought in Rudock, which was a fantastic move IMO. He seems to be doing the same thing in 2018 with Patterson. I just wish he had done this in 2017. It’s apparent that Speight simply didn’t recover from his 2016 injuries. It’s unfortunate that our entire 2017 season had to suffer from it.

Because OL, receiving corps and running backs were very very good on these teams. Makes it much easier for a young, talented QB to be successful. Remember, Jim was hired very late in the game and basically did not have a recruiting class his first year. That year, he recruited a grad transfer from Iowa who played excellent ball for us. His first full recruiting year produced Peters - a RS Freshman last year. Second year recruiting produced Mccaffrey. Third year Milton. That’s a solid slate of QB recruits. I think many people forget that Jim didnt recruit the class for the first year he coached. Let’s give the “Jim sucks at recruiting and developing QBs” narrative a rest. It takes time to turn a big ship like this and we are only in year 3 of the guys Jim has recruited.

This is a well thought out and lucid post, kudo's to you sir!

And to say that Hoke's recruiting is not to blame for last year's dropoff is purely absurd.

Let's look at he class of 2014 for a second those guys would have been the upperclassmen on last year's team.

Patrick Kugler OG

Kyle Bosch OG -xferred to WVU

Chris Fox OT -Retired from football

David Dawson - xferred to Iowa State

Dan Samuelson OT - xferred to Eastern Michigan

Logan Tuley-Tillman OT-Dismissed from team, xferred to Wash St.

Shane Morris QB

Jaron Dukes WR - Left team Medical Scholarship

Da' Mario Jones WR - xferred to BGSU

Csont'e York WR Dismisssed from team - enrolled at Toledo

Derrick Green RB -xferred to TCU

Hoke's Defensive Recruits fared much better but offensively out of that group the only real contributors were Khalid Hill, and Kugler.

Do you think that no real contributors from that class on offense could have caused us to take a step back last year.

This is year four, Jim's got mostly his guys in there now, and quite a few of them have real  in game experience, we'll see if their contributons improve this year.

In our current 2019 class we have 4 OL and 3 of them may be best suited to play inside. With only Mayfield and a lightweight Hayes in the mix as possible OTs in the 2018 class the position still seems too lightly recruited to me. It is crucial we have at least 1 good OT from the 2017 class.

Post-Maizen. How are you even considered a Michigan fan at this point? If you hate Harbaugh and the program that much - go find another f&cking team to support. If that is how you talk about how people that you actually support? I would hate to see how you treat everyone else in your life. Sports are supposed to be a fun hobby- nothing more and nothing less.

feel, I would find a new hobby. Why would anyone voluntarily spend time on something that makes them feel like sh!t. Nothing wrong with discussing what needs to be improved or changed - but why harp on the same things over and over again while mocking the “clueless” team / staff. I choose to be excited and happy about Michigan because I enjoy it and the distraction from all of the garbage the world throws at each of us. Even if they were 3-9 last year, I would still be looking forward to this season.

You sure do like putting words in my mouth. I never said I was miserable or that Michigan made me feel like shit. And I never called the team clueless. I said that Harbaugh looks clueless since the offense in 2017 had no identity and was, essentially, a debacle.

I'm glad you're content with watching Michigan football regardless of the outcome. I'm not. I have said repeatedly that I could see this team winning the conference in 2018. But until that happens, DiNardo has some valid points.

games and talented rosters than any other top program. The recruiting in GA is ridiculous. Give Kirby props, he convinced Chubb and Sony to return and then guided Fromm to develop as the season progressed. UM doesn’t gas the depth of talent as UGA, OSU and Bama, but if the top 25 guys or so can gel this season then UM can challenge for the playoffs.

Yeah I'll go ahead and say it. Harbaugh is a better coach than Carr. Anyone who was watched football should easily come to that conclusion. If Harbaugh had the talent of some of those early 2000 teams he would have most likely won more than 1 championship(which a lot of people don't even agree that Carr won.) No I am not Frost's mom, but Carr's championship is disputed and every other season he was in charge was way below expectations. Harbaugh has exceeded expectations twice and hit right where you would expect in the other year. Carr never exceeded expectations. Harbaugh has twice. How many times did Carr win 10+ games? Harbaugh is a better coach.

Would you have said the same thing at the end of 2016?

I think a reasonable answer is no.  JH was considered to be on track.  If not for the injury to WS, we would have won at least 1 of the 3 games we lost.  Even a 10-2 in BIG was considered good.  So he was not clueless in 2016 and suddenly became clueless in 2017. He had a bad year which was partly his fault and partly bad luck -- 2 QBs getting injured.

I consider MD to be an excellent coach, but I am sure some were saying that MD was clueless after 2016 season.  We saw what happened in 2017.

Judging a coach with a good to excellent track record based on 1 year of data is stupid.
