Changes/updates you'd like to see to The Big House

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

With the major South Competition and Performance project completed this winter that including 3 new stadiums build on the South athletic campus and the Canham and new arena projects on their way to being presented to Regents this summer, it got me thinking "what's next?".

Now this doesn't have to be a major renovation, but what changes would you like to see to The Big House?

I'd like to see them finally paint championship years on the boxes so they aren't plain Blue anymore, maybe re-start the brick program and have people buy bricks again.

Something/anything highlighting the past players on the concourse? It seems like as far as the Big 3 sports go The Big House does the least to do that.

You guys, who want to stand up all the time, and who think that everybody should be standing up most of the time; you really need to put your money where your mouths are.

In my section, I like to sit most of the time.  And I get annoyed when people stand for no reason.  I am perfectly able to stand; I'd rather walk 18 holes than ride in a golf cart.  I don't really mind standing up during exciting games.  But I get offended by douchebags who deem themselves "better fans" than the people I sit with.  Because there are very few people in the Stadium who are putting more money into Michigan athletics then the highest-level PSD-payors.

So as I say; you should put your money where your mouth is.  Lobby, and convince the Athletic Department to give you a kind of "standing section" that mimics the students.  You will need to make it worth their while.  With something like a PSD donation that would allow the University to segregate an area for you, where you won't bother anybody else, and where your "standing" ethos can be properly insured for liability, etc.

You say that you really don't want to tell anybody else what to do, but that you don't want anybody telling you what to do.  But if you are standing up one row in front of me, I can't see if I don't stand up as well.  And if the both of us are standing, everybody else behind us is going to have to start standing.

I pay plenty for my PSD and my tickets.  I don't need anyone else telling me what sort of fan I need to be, to be supporting Michigan football.  I'm in the 99th percentile of people supporting Michigan football.  And I am telling you exactly how you can go about satisfying your wishes and doing more to help Michigan football, all at once.  Put your money where your mouth is.  Develop the idea, institute the special PSD for your group -- the Standing Section -- and then you can be happy.  And not bother me.

I think that it is the friendly and civil thing, to ask someone to sit if they are blocking my view for no good reason (i.e., no one else standing in front of them).

I think asking once, nicely, and then again, more insistently but in a non-threatening way is the thing to do.

The third time, what I would not do, is "make" somebody sit down.  I'm a firm believer in just asking, and making myself clear.

After that, I'd let the ushers handle it; I'd let them call the police.

Who cares? They just made theirs bigger to compensate for something.

My friend said they literally mentioned that they're bigger than on ours on a tour he went on when he was a high school senior. They're pathetic.

Also, we can just replace the covering on ours to get rid of the faded look. All that is on there that looks faded is like a tarp covering to cover the skeleton.

I think the little brother thing is obnoxious but bragging about having bigger video screens when literally everything else about their stadium is demonstrably worse than ours really takes the cake. Even if you take out crowd size, which is barely even comparable, we don't have an upper deck that gives you vertigo, our stadium doesn't look like a parking garage, and we don't have giant ads for Auto-Owner's Insurance.

But their screen is bigger. What an achievement.

Do you need me to tell you where? Bill Martin heard the pleas from sentimentalists and reached a compromise. And I hope we never, ever clutter up the exterior concourse design with trashy plastic letters announcing past championships, retired numbers, etc.’

I liked the old letters, too.  I was one of the people who spoke to Bill Martin and encouraged him to preserve the letters.

But they do not fit, with the new concourses.  Nothing like that fits with the new concourses.  Not "national championship years," not retired jersey numbers, not "ring of honor" names.  I want none of that.  Most important, the architects agree and they too want nothing like that.

I'd like updates to the sound system. Specifically, all players and coaches miked, on both sides, with channel selection up to the spectator, available on WiFi.

I'd like updates in A/V as well. Cameras on every player. Drone coverage. Virtual reality.

On second thought, I'd like bench seats so hard no one wants to sit. Alpha numeric scoreboard and PA only. That's it.

NOTHING to take away from The Team. The Team. The Team.

I believe the interior of the stadium should stay as timeless as the Roman Colesseum.

I agree with your concourse idea, though. I think something honoring Brady, in particular, and maybe even all Super Bowl Cahmpion alums would be nice. Some sort of Brady memorial, to me , is as inevitable as it is deserved.

As for bricks and plaques, been there. Promise me someone like DB won't throw them away before even giving me the common courtesy of time enough to croak, then maybe.
