11 Warriors: Sympathy For The Devil

Submitted by MGoStrength on

A sobering perspective on how far UM football has fallen in the rivalry (and national relevance).  It's been so long since we've had any success in this game, at least in the win column.  There have been some good games and some bad.  There has been bad luck and injuries.  But, the consistent factor is being on the losing side of the win/loss column.

Even though we're a little frustrated with the last season, the finish to the 2018 class, and some questional assistant hires or lack of fires, this article illuminated for me that coaching consistency is the best thing for us.  We probably aren't getting any better coach than JH, and although we want it quicker than we're getting it, keeping him around for as long as he wants to be around seems like what's best for UM.  We all knew last year was a rebuilding year and I get the feeling that a good 2018 on the field with a few key wins will give the program the energy it needs to regain it's recruiting momentum and take us into the future with a better shot in this rivalry than we've had in quite some time, even if it doesn't return to what it was in the 90s.

When I say develop a culture, I mean not have to live up to the lengthy expectations built by and for Bo. I wouldn’t want us to become like OSU or SEC Programs. Beilein didn’t have to come into a program where the expectations and culture is set, and he had to adapt his style to that expectation and culture. Michigan basketball’s culture is John Beilein’s culture and play style. Any football coach we will have is going to come in and have to run a pro style offense and have a good defense. If I were king, I would have the coach come in and get what he wants to have set up dispite what the fans, boosters, etc want to see.

Between "academic tweener" threads and articles from 11 warriors this board is dangerously close to jumping the shark.

It's a fine article.  It makes the usual assumptions that defy reality because they don't fit into a narrative.  For example, it ignores the fact that Michigan had elite recruiting for 2016 and 2017. It argues that how will Michigan ever succeed if they have the 3rd best class in their division, ignoring the fact that PSU was 4th in 2016 and behind Michigan's worst season (2018) on a per-player average by about 3/4 of a point per 247.  It tries to be clever by half, believing that despite the fact Michigan played OSU even for 2 straight games and in any other timeline would be at least 1-1, maybe even 2-0 in those games, perhaps Michigan is just snake-bitten and we should feel bad but not too bad.  It's just...an article that you expect a rival blog to write, as it's red meat for its fans and gives you a chance to be "objective".  I'm sure when OSU shits the bed for a couple of years, this site will write a similar one and it will be approximately as trite and self-serving.

Let's get back to basketball and hockey, sports actually playing now and playing well, instead of a game of "let's win the offseason!" in football.

I have bookmarked this article in my bookmarks list...  I don't know why because it is depressing, but I want to reference it when we are on the sunny side up and they are hitting rock bottom.

To trust staff evaluations over recruiting service evals. Plain and simple. A shit ton of politics are injected into recruiting service rankings.

And then a future look back...

Year 1: With a transfer QB, Michigan was a miracle away from an 11 win season, despite a youthful team built solely from players recruited by the previous coaching staff.

Year 2: With a first year starter at QB, Michigan again repeats as 10 game winners, with a heartbreaking 1 point loss on the road, and OT loss at OSU, complete with a defining controversial call that should have ended the game, keeping with the lore of the rivalry.

Year 3: after losing 17 starting players to graduation, Michigan fields the youngest team in the nation, only to suffer multiple key injuries, forcing the third string QB to start in 4 of their 5 losses, resulting in a disappointing, but expected 8 win season.

Harbaugh went on to win multiple BIG TEN and National championships throughout his career at Michigan, compiling the best won-loss record in Michigan football history. Incredibly, there were some Michigan fans, or those that claimed to be, that felt that a change was needed after these first three years, or that ‘Harbaugh is probably the best we can get’.

Some are thoughtful comments, but most are about as classy as you'd expect from Buckeye fans:

"We live in Ontario. Visit family in Ohio often. Every trip, we stop at the Michigan Welcome Center (heading north or south) to piss on Michigan...it's a family tradition! Ohio State & its fans are literally keeping the Rivalry Alive."

Presumably they couldn't find any coolers to poop in while stopping by.

"I don't think it's too much of a stretch to connect the decline of the team(s) to the decline of the state [of Michigan]...basically an insolvent state without the money to repair roads, remove snow (which equals out because the roads are gravel anyway), or keep from poisoning its municipal water. While the university may still be very high quality and the lakeside towns are great for summer vacation rentals, it's a truly depressing sight when you at much of the state just crumbling. "

Sadly, there's some truth to that. But except for the "the university may still be very high quality" and "the lakeside towns are great for summer", he could easily be talking about Ohio, instead.
