Bracketology: 5 Seed/Midwest

Submitted by uncle leo on

Lunardi has moved us up to a 5 seed in the newest version:

http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/bracketology

And before everyone yells at me about Bracket Matrix. It hasn't been updated to account for yesterday's victory yet.

I do believe CBS's version has been updated, and still has Michigan at 7.

I would be a'ok with that region. Tennessee as the 4, Xavier as the 1.

they're pretty bad at perimeter defense and we'd get a ton of open looks from 3.  If advancing to the sweet 16 is going to require us to bomb threes (which I think it will), I think they'd be a team that will give us opportunities to do that.

Also, I selfishly would love a San Diego opening weekend.

Listening to broadcasters, I get the impression that Michigan is a near bubble team. Like in yesterday's game, near the end of the game when Michigan was on clearly on their way to victory, both commentators said they "think" Michigan makes the NCAA tournament. They "think" they do? Is this even much of a debate?

Yesterday's broadcast really was bad in that regard (and several others), and actually, when they said that, I almost tossed the beer that was in my hand at the television in disgust. I mean, we can argue about seeding for sure and we still have the conference tournament to navigate too, but "bubble team"? Clearly, we're going barring some utter catastrophe, or so I thought anyway

We can only lose 3 more games max.  Our last 2 regular season games are considered quadrant 1 games (@ PSU and @ Maryland).  Losing those will have very minimal impact on our resume.  If we then, somehow, manage to lose our first game in the big 10 tournament, that could potentially negatively impact our resume - as in moving us back to 8/9 or even 10.  There is no utter catastrope that could get this team out of the tournament.  We are a mortal lock for the tourney.  Period.

How in god's name is OU a 6 seed? They've lost 8 of their last 10 (likely 9-11 after tonight)! 38th in Kenpom. Losing conference record. One decent non-con win over Wichita St. It's absurd.

in the country.  The committee goes bonkers over teams that schedule difficult opponents and OU did that despite playing in a really tough conference already.

I don't mind that they reward teams for making college basketball better (unlike the CFP which simply rewards teams for recruiting well and blowing out vastly inferior opponents).

As for losing 8 of 10, the committee has de-emphasized "recent" performance, such that it doesn't hurt them much in the context of their full resume.

LSU is a funny team and both a good and bad loss at the same time.  While we are fighting for our 4th Quadrant 1 win...LSU has SEVEN Q1 wins. That's 5 more than MSU!

be missing it with LSU.  Based on the committee's first seedings, it is clear they're putting a lot of weight into Q1/Q2 wins.

SEVEN Q1 wins has top be amongst the top 10 in the country in that category, right?

I could easily see them being that surprise team that has bad metrics but a ton of quality wins to get in the field.

would be a great set up for us

we still have business to take care of tho, we have to at a minimum split these last two and win at least one in BTT to end up as 6.  the layoff from big ten tourney to selection show can hurt us especially if we have bad/blow out losses

at a 6 seed. Get the 11 and then the 3 seed.  Avoid the 1's and 2's until sweet 16 weekend. Either way, Beilein will have them ready to go.  It's rare for his teams to lay an egg in the NCAA's.

The reason U-M can’t get to Detroit is each site can only take two teams seeded 1-4. This is because if you have a 1/16 game, you have to have an 8/9 game to set up the second round, 2/15 sites have to have a 7/10, and so on. (And, of course, U-M can’t play there as a 5 or lower because the higher seed is protected against that.)

So, not only does U-M need to get to the 4 line—we also need to be no worse than 2nd among teams geographically near Detroit.

Which makes perfect sense.  UM is one of the more popular schools in the country.  If you put UM out west, fewer people would watch their games, since over 50% of America's population is east of the Mississippi.  The NCAA loves, loves, loves TV ratings.

Has UM been assigned to the west bracket in the past 40 years?  UM is typically in the midwest or east.

Michigan is now the fourth 6-seed in the Matrix although there appears to be a mess-up with the BracketForecast.com's bracket seeing as it doesn't include Michigan for its 2/19 submission (however if you visit their website they have Michigan as an 8 in their 2/20 update).
