QB vs Ohio State: Thought Experiment

Submitted by Carcajou on

No indication so far that Michigan's starting QB versus Ohio State will be any other than John O'Korn. Maybe not a best case scenario, but not much choice at the moment. You go with what you've got.

Spare us the negativity on JOK- true or not, we've heard it all before. It's stale, unoriginal, pointless, and depressing, Yes, he gets overwhelmed and presses too hard sometimes. Got no choice right now but to root for the young man.

Not sure what was available downfield (Thanks, Fox!), but for some inexplicable reason on the last possession he seemed determined to run for the first down on 3rd and 4th down, when he was clearly outnumbered. Was this a matter of dropping his eyes? Or was it not trusting his receivers and protection, based on past experience?

With the exception of that looping stunt that always seems to fool them (and resulted in Peters' injury), Michigan's pass protection has improved recently, even at this game looking back at it. Peters was getting a little bit of time, and DPJ adjusted nicely on that deep post (if thrown properly it would have been a TD).

The receivers still need to do more, not only about separation, but being more physical. McDoom didn't put up enough effort IMO on that Hitch & Go to the end zone that was underthrown. While not perfect passes, receivers had their hands on four of O'Korn's incompletions, so it can't all be on him. Not sure if he throws a more difficult ball to catch, or what.

Senior Day. Last home game- maybe last game of football ever for JOK.He is in serious need of some kind of redemption. Here's hoping that Michigan's coaches can somehow get him in the right mind to perform the game of his life.

So again, sparing us the snark and negativity: Fast Forward to 4PM Saturday, and Michigan has upset Ohio State with John O'Korn at QB. How did they do it?

O’Korn jams his thumb picking up a ball during warmups. Pressed into duty, Malzone throws for only 160 yards but no sacks or turnovers, and Nordin has a record setting seven FG performance and a 21-20 win.

This sounds insane but from a pure physical ability stanpoint at this point in their career I don't think JOK holds UM back as much. The problem is it's not necessarily the physical stuff that is the issue. It's like with JOK the wires are always crossed. When he shoudl go deep he checks down, when he should check down he throws deep into double coverage, when he should run he doesn't. It's the mental part that he just can't overcome. I'm not laying it on him because honestly when you look at his overall physical ability I think he has enough to get the job done. So...how does Harbaugh work with him this week to limit the critical mental errors? JOK can run the whole playbook but maybe he shouldn't. Keep it super simple and vanilla outside of a couple plays and limit his choices. Simple reads, and hope for a good run game. Shots at the TE in middle of field, screens and short passes and hope for the best.

It's hard to imagine him not fumbling or throwing 1-3 picks this game.

Damn I wish Peters or WS was healthy.

Wilton wants to play.  Wilton is free of pain and full motion.  He will continue to lobby all week, show the coaches he can make all the throws, but.    I'm not sure the coaches want him getting injured again at their feet. Protecting WS from a legit shot at getting further injured is quite the conundrum.  OSU is going to sack our qb this weekend, and most likely multiple times.  It's NO question that if all the qb's on the team are healthy WS gives us the best chance to win. Period.

Watching David Carr yesterday, and listening to Tony Romo explain the injury gives me more optimism that he can play.  Romo said the first week is terrible, but by week 3 or 4 you can go with no reservations.

The 3-3-5 look was created or implemented to stop OSU, specifically JT or coach meyer offense.  Not seen much of it this year, but I expect you will this week.

Lastly, if Wilton Speight does play (huge if, not likely at this point) and leads us to a victory I hearby request he is know and called tWS from here on out. Theee Wilton Speight! GoBlue!

Their keys to the win were good blocking up front, turnovers, and good QB play. We’re not getting good blocking up front, and the QBs haven’t been able to do much, nor have the running backs. That’s simply not a formula for success against Ohio State, and game planning isn’t going to change that. Look at the three significant opportunities that Michigan had where no points were scored at Wisconsin, because the offense couldn’t get anything going, as examples of what the problem is. It isn’t the game plan, it’s the execution of the game plan. You can’t win without strong O-line play. That’s the Achilles heel for this squad. It was also the biggest problem under Hoke.
