Big Ten officiating is atrocious

Submitted by Maizen on

16 penalties for 141 yards on Michigan and many of them of the dubious variety compared to 5 for 55 yards on IU. Multiple uncalled holds, multiple uncalled pick plays, multiple uncalled intentional groundings. Either big ten refs are incompetent or corrupt but the result is the same. Refs nearly handed IU the game. Not saying UM played perfect (they clearly didn't), but that was bad.

UPDATE: BTN just said the 16 penalties is an all time record.

Bad discipline by defense. But the referees tend to throw the flag on even questionable calls- and not just against Michigan. They take the game out of the hands of the players. Happens way too much in B1G play- led by enemy #1 John O’Neil. Defensive backs need to be way more disciplined on coverages. The thought now in 3rd down is chuck it toward a wr and our corners will interfere. 1st down. Need to get better.

Complaining about officiating is only for when we are facing a loss. Today was a win. However, I think most of the calls were legit against M. What pisses me off is if they are going to pick apart M’s play then they better pick apart Indy’s play as well. They were not angels by any means.

I DVR'd the game and set it to record for an extra hour.  Fucking penalty calls and ridiculously stupid finish in OT almost caused me to miss the ending.  One extra hour!  Actually, if the refs called penalties evenly both ways then I would've likely missed it.  So, thank you refs for not prolonging the game?

I really wish they would do something with the targeting rules. Offensive players are falling down or lean with their head and the defensive player is still called for targeting. I am glad the targeting call they initially made on the Purdue hit on O’Korn was reversed. I don’t even think it should have been a late hit.

The Hurst tackle on their QB should not have been roughing the passer. I feel like the game is getting too soft. Football is a tough sport. Let the kids play the game.

I think I was permanently traumatized by the amount of time I had to spend watching referee conferences today.

Also, I didn't know they got rid of the intentional grounding rules, so at least I learned something today.

The Zebras suck. They have far too much impact on the outcomes of the games. The team has to seize control of games early and put opponents away quickly so the officiating plays less of a role in the outcome.

I was at the game today. It was awful. I hate feeling compelled to complain about refs, but this was atrocious. I leaned over to the UM fans in front of me and asked if any holding calls had been made against IU. The guy said he thought maybe 1 total hold. There was one play where 3 flags were thrown, all against UM. I don’t think that’s been done in the history of football.

To think that the IU offensive line made no holds against our vaunted Dline and LBs is just stupid. This game reminded me a lot of OSU game last year. OSU had a young offensive line and I believe no holding calls (maybe 1) was ever called against them.... Against Taco, Mo, Mone, and Wormley. I mean... seriously?!

UM fans felt rather defeated in the stadium today because it felt that every play would go against us. I believe the 5 for 55 against IU are just “cover calls” so it’s not totally obvious that there is this ridiculous bias against Jim Harbaugh by this douche refs in the B1G.

The flag on Hill's first int I thought was a clean play. He was jamming the receiver within 5 yards, disengaged when the ball was thrown, then made the play. Sorry Brock, that's not called every time unless it's a garbage flag. At least we got it back on Fant's int, which was a hold, but 90% of the time they let the DB get away with that kind of hold (in the NFL they seem to call it more consistently).

Sounds like they didn't show a replay on some of these, but I was at the game and there were PLENTY of PI calls against Michigan that were not equally called for against IU. There was a 3rd down pass (I think) to Perry where the DB arrived way too early. Nothing. The deep shot to Crawford was egregious PI, no call.

A couple throws from IU were close to intentional grounding, 1 of which was very bad.

The only call I do remember seeing going Michigan's way was the PI on the O'Korn interception. There was nothing there.

I think they totally should have let the players play some football, but I wasn't to upset with the calls that they made.

Am I crazy? I honestly think that the OSU game last year was so bad to the point where I am less vulnerable to complaining about the refs. That game makes almost any calls look good, Also along with the Joe Bolden targeting in 2015 MSU making lots of targeting calls looking way less bad.

At almost the very beginning of the game Michigan got a sideline warning out of nowhere. I sat right behind the Michigan sideline a good distance up where I could see everything. There was nothing that warranted it. Later Coach Allen for IU would not get off of the field after he got angry about a call. He threw his playbook, left the field, and then came back on screaming. No warning or anything. After the game a guy I know in IU athletics told me that the Big Ten is giving Michigan a very small leash based on last year. Just thought this would be a good place to let everyone know. Especially the people wondering why Harbaugh seems out of it. He was engaged the whole game, but it's clear he's been told he'll get a sideline warning rather easily. Piss poor reffing both ways yesterday. The IU official was mad about the officiating both ways. It was very bad.

If the game was called the same on both sides, the penalties will usally equal out.  The pass interfence call against Indiana was not pass interference but holding. That was one call that IN had a beef.  Michigan had about 10.  Even the out of bounds catch by IN that was allowed and reversed should have never happened.  The announcers called the play from the booth that he was out of bounds then came in.  How does an Official NOT SEE THAT! Unfortunately, when you have 3 penalties on one play all against the Michigan defense and two of them questionable (roughing the passer that wasn't) you start to wonder what is going on. As others have posted, technically you can call a penalty on every play. EVERY PLAY.  When a DB grabs a jersey, even for a second, it is holding. If an Olineman grabs someone, which is almost every play, it is holding.  Obviously, officials try to weigh the infraction against the signifcance in the play and how obvious in most cases.

I have a feeling, Michigan will almost always not get the benefit of doubt in close games.
