Stephen Ross reloads the Michigan Money Cannon
The University of Michigan's biggest donor, billionaire real estate mogul Stephen M. Ross, has made another hefty donation to his alma mater, pushing it over its $1 billion campaign goal for student support.
UM announced Wednesday, Sept. 20, that Ross has made a $50 million donation, bringing his lifetime giving total to $378 million.

Personal attacks and ridicule are not necessary and down right fucking mean, go back to rcmb.

Jesus, wd. I don't know what it will take for you to gain some perspective on life, but you need it really badly, dude. This is just... SAD.
The University of Michigan does not exist for the sake of athletics. Thank tiny jeebus for that.

He's already said many times that UM sports are the only part of UM that interests him. It's kinda sad to see someone continue to try to beat him up by repeating his own argument back to him like it was some kind of genius concept you came up with.

So... Maybe we can get a few more coach buses for the band.
September 20th, 2017 at 1:19 PM ^
I want to say that with a Ross-type donation, the band should definitely be perusing the Boeing site looking for some pricing on a 787 or something like that, or at least get something comparable off the "used aircraft" market. Throw caution to the wind and travel to every game in style, that sort of thing.
September 20th, 2017 at 1:22 PM ^
Honestly, I'm surprised no one has thought of donating something like that to any college football team.
The Red Wings and Tigers have Red Bird 1.
September 20th, 2017 at 1:53 PM ^
The donation of a plane wouldn't make Stephen Ross break a sweat. But the yearly maintenance costs, pilots, insurance, etc would just kill things. Too much maintenance. Pro sports are a profit based business, if they make enough money they can expense out the maintenance costs...
September 20th, 2017 at 2:13 PM ^
We already have a private plane for the coaching staff...but I don't thinnk you could put everyone on even a 757 could you? If the school received this free I suspect it could potentially save money in travel costs. You would have the annual costs of the flight crew, operating cost per hour, insurance, fuel and miscellaneous...contract out the maintenance. Got to be cheaper than buying tickets for everyone x # of fly-travel games. Would make for some interesting number crunching.
September 20th, 2017 at 9:11 PM ^
....and how is that working out for the red wings and tigers???
September 20th, 2017 at 2:43 PM ^
Yeah, you're gonna need to go used...

That dude has a money artillery regiment. Favorite SR moment was seeing him at an alum event with Schlissel during the recent unpleasantness and realizing that he was not at all tied to Brandon/Hoke, but wanted what was best for the University. Not all major donors are like that, so we are doubly lucky.
September 20th, 2017 at 1:53 PM ^
I just wish I could've seen a cent of these million dollar donations go towards my UM college costs. If not your run of the mill student like me, who gets the benefits of this money, exactly? I mean, I get that I'm peripherally getting the benefit of facilities that get this money, but I handed them a heafty sum of money for tuition in the firstplace.
I'm a lifelong UM fan for sure, but it irks me when the university never helped me financially one iota yet I get requests for donations from them in the mail regularly. Maybe I should be the one mailing UM to ask for donations to repay my loans. Hmmm...

It's all business school affiliated, regular joe's and jane's in LSA or a less "prestigious" program, don't benefit at all.
September 20th, 2017 at 2:32 PM ^
To be fair, didn't the Ross BBA program just expand the studeny body by 20-25% while keeping standards very high? I believe most of that expansion was thanks to SR's giving. Expanded class size gives more kids a chance to get in and increases the university's profile overall as it rises the ranks.

Just what we need, more 22 year olds with "business" degrees.
September 20th, 2017 at 4:29 PM ^
You have no idea what the hell you are talking about. Ross Business school grads are not your average business school grad. No offense to lesser schools, but Ross grads are head and shoulders above any other B-school in the state.

The model that Michigan uses now is very similar to what NU and the Ivies offer. Need based for everyone based upon income. If your household income is under $200k, you're getting financial aid.

@DualThreat
Did you receive no grant money from the general scholarship funds? I graduated about 7 years ago, in-state. This was my first semester:

I'm pretty sure that "Michigan Grant" was a general scholarship from UM that came from some fund open to all students based on need. Not a ton, but that, plus the merit award, plus a $1000 scholarship got me down to taking out about $4k in loans per semester, which I think is not too bad. I'm sure these numbers are much different now. So, all that to say that is I think the U does do their best to get students help when they can.

I graduated in 2003. I don't remember any "Michigan Grant" money. If it existed back then, I certainly wasn't aware of it. Or maybe I just fell through a crack or something. I did have to take out federal student loans, so I certainly could've used the money. Well, at least some students with need do get direct grants like that now. That's good. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

"University Grant" tail-end of the 80's. A. Alfred Taubman and some other private scholarships made up for the difference. Or perhaps it was the other way around.
In any event, "Michigan Grants" have a long history at Michigan and a good SAT score can help you there.

I heard a couple days ago that he threw a few million towards Hurricane Irma. It's been a busy week for the guy. Ross has also pledged to give away half his wealth to charity privately, which is up to you whether or not you want to believe that.
Nothing drives me nuts quite like people telling other people how to spend their money.

There is a big difference from a man like Ross, who donates to a top University and Trumppanzee who bilks students at Trump University. What a shame that so many idolize a president that was a draft dodger and that scams the USA
