NEG UPDATE: New #1

Submitted by The Fugitive on

It wouldn't be near the first game if we didn't have a neg record. If you recall, last season Mr Yost set an (un)official Neg record.  According to MGoHoF, Yost's Neg total as of the spring was 1,248 for not believing UMbig11's report that Speight was QB1.

Well then.

Somewittyname did not let that record stand.  Please go to the Camp Update from Sam Webb thread and Neg if you haven't already.

EDIT: As of 12:50pm on Sunday, the results are as follows:

Total Negs 4,621
Total Posts 37
Neg Average 125
Neg High 259

The table only takes into account Negs in the Camp Update thread.

It is important to note that this poster began their spree with over 4,400 points and is currently -1,397.  We can assume this poster accumulated roughly 5,800 Negs over the course of 18 hours.

The Mods may need to confirm this, but have we ever witnessed an OP that has a negative point total?  someshittyname created a post (which can be negged here) comparing last year's starters versus this year's projected starters.  It's hilarious to me to see that negative point total in an OP.  Nice job.

I'm not counting upvotes. Strictly Negs. Thank you stephenrjking for pointing out the current total in the HoF.

Ha Ha! to Jack Daniels.  I haven't gone near the stuff in almost 18 years as during my freshman year of college my roommate and I decided to conduct an experiment in alcohol and Mike Tyson's punchout.  When we started, we of course were killing Glass Joe and the rest of the contenders.  After killing a 5th of Jack, we were getting TKO'd by Glass Joe and couldn't figure out how he had gotten so fast.

This comment alone is pretty disgusting.  Know matter how swn wants to spin it, in today's culture, this is nothing to accuse someone of or joke about:

"Stick to sleeping with 15 year olds and leave the discussion for the big boys."

Yes. We're all totally the ones acting like children. I have a 6 year old. When he sees something is annoying to his sister he keeps it up until she goes off, and then he laughs for soliciting a response from her. I'm not saying you're a 6 year old, just that the behavior is uncanningly similar.

Over +1550 Neg and that is from the other post alone, now he has to come in here and snark some more.

A serious glutton for punishment.........

This is no longer a "point of view" discussion about the potential (or lack there of) of the OL, you are just egging on the crowd to Neg Bang you.....

I have up voted you like 15 times somewittyname. I feel where you're coming from. However this is a message board of fans. To be a "fan" means you are suspending some part of rationale in order to be optimistic about some arbitrary game. Pointing this out causes pain. People react. Negbang commence

that is not why people are downvoting. There has been disagreements on Mgoblog before. However, when people brought up reasons why Nolan Ulizio at RT wouldnt be a disaster, he responds with " lol whatever helps you sleep at night" instead of actually engaging in a discussion. Magnus can be perceived as negative, but he actually gives rationale for his predictions.

Yes, that's part of being a part of any kind of blog, you typicaly share common opinions / hopes.I guess it depends on your level of fandon, but yes, some on this board are probably just blind loyalist's and that every year they believe we'll believe undefeated, just like there's other parts of the board that believe that we'll do anything from not win a game to win a national championship.  That's what makes blogs fun that at the end of the day, outside of trolls, you're atleast all fans of the same team even if you have different outlooks.  My issue with swn is when he brings in stupid / naive comments about loving teenagers.  I have a sibling that was affected by that situation, so to joke about, especially given what happened at PSU, is a very immature, irrational, and un-informed comment.

As dickish as somewittyusername is, I actually share their concern. The current bar for RT we have is JBB's play from last year. That's not a high bar, and I personally don't expect his play to improve that drastically in one offseason.

Currently he's in a battle to start at RT. That doesn't seem great to me. Now we have Ulizio jumping in the competition. I don't buy that as an inherently good thing. It could be, but to me it seems more likely that RT is a problem position, that neither JBB or Runyan have played well enough, and now Ulizio's getting a shot because why not.

I could be very wrong, and I hope I am. But I don't thiink that's an unreasonable take to have. Obviously somewittyusername was a dick about it so negs are deserved, but the overall concern I share.

RT is a problem position, full stop. It's hard for me to believe anyone was not aware of that before tonight if you frequent mgoblog. JBB was OK in one half vs Wisconsin and bad against Rutgers. That's very little to go on. We know almost nothing about Runyan or Ulizio. Before tonight, it was a 2 man battle at RT. Now.perhaps there is a third man, given he's being given some very valuable time with the 1's. The argument is that this is good for depth, having this third guy. What's the worry? That JBB and Runyan have been bad and they're grasping at straws? Could be. But I doubt JBB has regressed from last year. If we peg his probable play as bad, and Ulizio passes him, then he must be less-bad and also beaten out Runyan. And now all of a sudden there's a 3 deep. It's not a great 3 deep, but it's better than a not a great 2 deep. That's worst case. Best case is both JBB and Runyan improved, and Ulizio is passing them. I don't think that's likely, but that would upgrade the potential at the position substantially. Either scenario brings depth. Where does your concern lie? If it's just with the position overall, everybody agrees with you. What is your concern with Ulizio getting first team reps?

I understand the concern that he's in the conversation, given he wasn't a highly ranked recruit and it's a position of concern.  That being said, the coaches recruit these players for a reason and are looking for a specific type of player they can develop. Most years you see lineman that weren't necessarily highly ranked guys in terms of recruiting but coaching developed them and turned them into NFL players.  That's one of the things that Frey was noted for.  If I'm not mistaken, Ulizio's knock wasn't that he didn't have the size or athleticism, but he needed to develop.  Enter great coaches like Frey and Drevno, and if they developed him enough to be in the conversation, worse case it gives the line depth.

It's officially Sunday morning EST and I'm having way too much fun with this. Love a good meltdown. And statistics. This is the perfect marriage between the two. Also her two top posts are at 154 and 152 negs respectively. That's insane.

Nice. Can't believe what sort of positive upvote ratio I had to counterbalance all of this. Crazy how rational thought works I guess. Only in certain instances though I suppose. Sometimes the will of people override truth for the sake of what they like. Pretty common these days.

I'm actually gonna go to sleep now, but I'm really excited to check back in the morning to see if you've somehow hit negative points. That'd be excellent. Just so you know how much i care. Legit excited about it. Like, going to bed before a big vacation sort of excited. Not sure how on earth I'll actually sleep (/s).

Just wait until I put 8 good years of effort trying to build up my total MGoPoints, only to see it vanish because of one night of drinking and posting.

Dug this up from SWN's comment history. In reference to Jean Delance transferring (a thread she started) : "Could also be a red flag. I'm definitely not saying I wouldn't want him competing with JBB and Runyan though. The more the merrier." LOL WUT?!

It's hard for me to constrain my thoughts to the dimensions of your own, so I can't quite see how this post would be anything remotely surprising? I lthink RT is a question mark and although Delance may or may not have issues of his own it wouldn't hurt to have him on board. Come on man, you're reaching. Really reaching.

Mr. Elbel

August 20th, 2017 at 1:19 AM ^

So you'd rather have a guy who can't play this year for us due to transfer rules over a guy who seems to be proving himself in fall practice to people that know what the hell they're looking at? Delance has to sit a year, so he's not competing with them this season. You've written off someone who hasn't even seen the field yet based on another player seeing the field and not looking great last year. All you can go off of is recruiting rankings, which seems to be why you want Delance even though it could be a red flag he's leaving UT. Rankings are not the end-all. Especially on the o-line. Just stop. You're not making sense. You've dug your hole well beyond the requisite 6 feet.

Listen to the sage advice of Bo Schembechler and proceed accordingly:

We're going to believe in each other,

we're not going to criticize each other,

we're not going to talk about each other,

we're going to encourage each other.

Glenn Schembechler

I suggest now would be a great time to be on the encouraging end.....

He's not, except that it's August 20, and his name is just popping up now for RT. Jean Delance, as you probably figured is not on our team. So, here we are with a questionable RT situation and only mgoboreders are not concerned. Why are they not concerned? Because according to the only coherent argument I've heard so far, Harbaugh had good OLs at Stanford.

Its 1:07 am and the negbang pace has slowed. somewittyname is at 1758 points at the time of this writing. Let us renew our effort in the morning.

Doesn't seem to have actually slowed. She's down an additional 80 points just 15 minutes later. It does seem she's adding more comments so maybe now she's more getting nickel and dimed here and there.

Given that this is a competitive bunch, can we count on an attempt to overtake this record every August?  Might as well make it a fun and entertaining competition to see how low onecan go before their one way (?) trip to Bolivia.  I hear La Paz gets kind of cold at night in mid-August, might be a place to beat the summer heat of A2......
