What "gadget" plays would you like to see this year?

Submitted by UMfan21 on

Maybe not a single "play" but maybe a package or theme...

It seems to me, Harbaugh tends to put in a wrinkle each year, for one year only.  In 2015 it was the heavy use of fullbacks.  Kerridge and Houma really excelled.  Yes, last year the hammering panda was used heavily at the goal line, but wasnt' featured nearly as much as Kerridge and Houma.

In 2016 we saw "the train" debut.  Extremely effective early on, it didn't really fool Ohio State.

If our offense is truly moving to more of a 4 wide set, I'm curious what types of wrinkles you guys think we might see.   Personally, I'd still love the train.  I think it could give us significant advantage if we had 4 WR or 3WR/1TE lined up in that formation, and look how the defense lines up and throw trips at the side where we have a numbers advantage.

What other plays do you guys have? 4 verts? double crosses?  Do we see the tunnel screen make a resurgence?

I always hoped for that UM team that was totally dominant - wham, bam, knock people over - slame it down their throats - phycially pounding football - completely unstopable.

Late in the game and need ONE freakin first down to seal the game.  Have to have a go to play that can't be stopped.  Hopefully the O Line is so good this year, we can jam down the throats of the osu line.

im all for creativity but id really love to see them able to line up vs good teams and grind 4-5 yard runs when necessary, especially when its winning time

Anything that delivers more than 2-3 yards per play I'm good with. And if it ain't working *cough*Peppers*cough* for the love of God, stop trying to make it happen.

EXACTLY!

They may have the best designed "gadget" plays in spring and fall camp, but the offense (whether it's the OLine, Drevno's play calls, etc) can't have third and fourth quarter performances like they did at Iowa and OSU.

(And I'd love to get a player or coach shot up with some truth serum and ask about passing plays from the "PepCat" formation...did they have any drawn up? Were they called and Peppers just didn't throw it?  Did Drevno or whoever was calling plays at the time just tighten up too much?, etc.)

Bubble screens

Too soon?

What ever it is I just hope they don't run it into the ground like they did last year with the McDoom jet sweep. It became almost worthless at the end of the season

The wildcat is fine in limited quantity if you do more with it than Michigan did last year with Peppers. You need someone who is a threat to pass the ball lining up in it.

WR screens and quick hitches. Not a gadget play but I just really want to see what kind of playmakers we have with all this youth at wide out.

Since we only saw about 2 different plays last year. I think he caught one screen pass maybe? I would have liked to see a few more of those and maybe some quick slants to get him in space. Seems like we kept waiting until we'd see the full package, but was left feeling like there should have been more.

Just my 2 cents for being a playbook junkie... I would very much like to add that our current roster yields many advantageous matchups against even elite defenses. With the addition of coach Frey, I'm highly anticipating more spread zone runs, especially with the new 4 WR sets. Our new OL will be more accustomed to the proper zone principles soon, I can't wait to see what Harbaugh does with our RB by committee this year
