Why do you hate MSU more than OSU?

Submitted by MonkeyMan on

I have read these boards for at least 3+ years and I can definitely say that the majority of folks here hate MSU more than OSU:

There are far more threads bashing MSU than OSU

When MSU plays OSU, more people want OSU to win

I am wondering why? As far as I can see OSU has done far more damage to UM than MSU has done over the years:

OSU has cost UM many great bowl game bids, Big 10 championships, rankings

OSU takes many great recruits that might have gone to UM (MSU doesn't seem to have had much of a chance with these kids)

OSU has thoroughly humiliated UM in many games (esp. RR and Hoke)

Some here will say "because its an in-state conference rivalry" but there are many of these in CFB that do NOT produce this level of hate: Miami/FL State, Northwestern/Illinois, Baylor/Texas, Cal/Stanford, Washington/WSU, etc.

I live in C-bus and don't understand why MSU is hated so much- enlighten me.

And they asked (with a grim, uninviting voice) all incoming Michigan student parents who went to OSU raise your hand. No one did. Someone said they went to MSU, and the presenter said "Hey, thanks for sharing". That's it in a nutshell. No one gives a shit except for taking care of business and beating them and of course schadenfreude now and then for pop corn eating entertainment.

OSU is by far the most reviled rival. However, I think the impression of the MSU hate is created by proximity. Those of us in Michigan are far more likely to hear about the MSU games than OSU. The other factor is the fact that MSU fans I know spend a lot of time telling me about the activities at Michigan - which is why to this day "little brother" really fits the fan base since they are always looking to see what Michigan is doing and trying to one-up.

Fun anecdote - when a student, following the '96 game I was told by a Sparty that they were our #1 rival. The crestfallen look on his face when it was pointed out that we may be *their* #1, they were closer to #3 (OSU and ND) was fantastic.

Where you live influences the feelings. I have to associate with sparties here in the Detroit area and their recent success is annoying. My former roommate lives in Dayton and never deals with little brother; he is surrounded by buckeyes. I have also heard former players say that OSU and ND were always tough games but that MSU was a dirty game. It's hard to respect a team like that. That's without considering the history of PED usage as well as the multiple assaults against women, students, and other athletes.

Lastly I've never met a buckeye who said he could gone to Michigan.

Any diehard Michigan fan HATES the buckeyes and will always HATE the buckeyes more than sparty.  I grew up in Ann Arbor and went to school there from K through college.  Never really hated msu.  Only twice did I even bother to come close to hating them.  First when they beat us on the no PI call on Desmond in the end zone.  And then not again until two years ago on that dreaded punt to end the game.  Mainly I've always felt like sparty was little brother.  Not that relevant.  The buckeyes have always been a hated rival and everything they do makes me want to puke.  That's also why WE MUST BEAT THEM NOW!

Sparty is just getting a lot of bad press for bad behavior.  I don't think that means people hate them more than osu.  Oh I do HATE that espn moron janelle what's her name.

Dislike OSU more, but Sparty frustrates me more often considering many of my coworkers went there. I don't work with many OSU people, but the ones I do are pretty annoying as well.

The team--I despise MSU and strongly dislike but respect OSU.

The fans--they're both insufferable a*holes, but OSU fans are in a league of their own.

...the trash-talking from many of Sparty's fans as if the last 7 years were somehow indicative of the last 7 decades is old, but they're not even close on my personal "hate" scale. I'd put my Hate Rank (starting at Number 1) somewhere along the lines of OSU, Notre Dame (close close close second), Alabama, OSU again (just on principle), Notre Dame again (same), huge cliff, then State (in a not even worthy of hate range). One might almost risk outting oneself as a Staee troll even suggesting a Michigan grad would hate MSU more than OSU...that's the dream Sparty dreams at night...an incoherent wistful never-gonna-happen kind of dream.

Mostly having to deal with their fans more. A friend of mine hates OSU more after going to Toledo. So that is my reasoning.

but they are acutally good and have been owning us for the past 15 years. Their fanbase is trash and they run an SEC style football factory in the north  - with their last 2 successful coaches being sanctimonious, hypocritical scumbags.

MSU has just been more insufferable durning the RR/Hoke years as they had their flukish run of success during our time wandering in the desert.  Their coach being a UM troll obviously made the situation more intolerable. The cliche "act like you've been there before" was impossible for them to follow - as winning was such a novelty act for them.

Now that their unicorn years have passed, and they can go back to the hole of irrelevance in which they  belong, I will pay them no attention except for the inevitable once every 4-5 years they play us close or upset us when playing their super bowl game.

Hate them both. But the last few years the bandwagon Staee fans have been ridiculous. They don't know anything about the actual history of that program. It is a joke. Then last season all of the sudden all of the bandwagon Staee fans were rowing the boat. Could not find a Staee fan during football seaon. They pulled out the "wait until basketball season" refrain that I have heard most of my life. Time to shut them up for good this season.

Senior in college here, growing up in West Michigan surrounded by Sparties during their strong football run grew a special hate in my heart for MSU.  There's no team I like seeing lose more than MSU.  I only remember 2 Michigan football victories against Ohio State, and I never really had Buckeye fans in my ear talking crap growing up, so from experience I respect OSU way more than MSU.  That's why I hate MSU more.

I hate OSU more, but the difference is that I don't have to deal with OSU people in my life to the extent that I do Sparty folk. Family, longtime friends, colleagues--Sparty is everywhere, and they're annoying about it. I only have to deal with Buckeyes once a year.

Ohio State is that chronic, intense back pain that you can't and never will rid yourself of.

Sparty is that booger that you can't get off your damn finger.

My animosity for the Nuts is far greater than it is for Sparty. Obviously Mork was a major pain in the ass during the RR/Hoke era, but, Meyer is really the guy we want completely distraught year in and year out.

Always will.

MSU is the irritating and obnoxious next door neighbor who plays music too loud late at night and lets his dog shit on your lawn.

OSU is the prison-tatted guy down the block operating a meth lab in his garage who drives very slowly past your house leering at your daughter.

Now that order has been restored to the universe (cough, cough, 3-9,) I hate OSU more. In fact, 51 weeks out of the year I hate OSU more.

no way in hell do i hate msu vs osu. i want michigan to win first then michigan state. do not want osu to win anything.

For me, that's incorrect as well.

I have a mild disdain for MSU - their attempt to put down Michigan driven by their desire to be Michigan is ultimately sort of endearing even though it can be tiresome due to its unoriginality.

I simply hate OSU. I respect them grudgingly, but I hate them.

The word "hate" should be reserved for Al Qaeda and ISIS.  MSU and OSU are sports rivals and don't begin to compare with Al Qaeda and ISIS.

On the other hand, if Notre Dame was playing Al Qaeda or ISIS in football, I would root for Al Qaeda or ISIS.

It's not that deep.

For me, it's because I actually think Ohio State is good. Really good, in fact.

For whatever reason, I can't look at MSU and believe they are good at football. Ted Ginn was absolutely electrifying. Pryor at least looked really cool. Braxton, Barrett, Elliot, and crew were all great college players. I hate them for the same reason I hate LeBron: they're too good.

I hate MSU because they're little brother.

I respect both OSU and MSU; Dantonio did a lot for MSU but OSU just lucks out at every turn.  My hatred for OSU far exceeds my dislike of MSU.

I have family and friends that went to MSU, spent a semester there, so it is ok.

OSU... they get Tressel and he delivers on his promise to bash us in.  He leaves and they get an upgrade in Meyer... wtf. Every close game in recent memory they have won and the last game takes the cake. WTF.

and I just pity MSU fans. It looks like MSU has found their rightful place in the lower tier of Big Ten football. Now it's time to beat those cheatin' bastards from Columbus. Go Blue!
