OT - Summer is Here, Got Anything Special Planned?

Submitted by xtramelanin on

Mates,

It is that time of year when most schools get out and folks will travel.   This week it will actually be at or above normal temperatures up north for the first time in months, with great looking weather though some very cold lakes.  Its that time of year when people go on vacation or go visit grandma, go see Washington D.C, go up north, or if you're Putin, maybe invade a country to two.

So the question is this:  What are your summer plans this year, looking forward to some trips or visits, taking the family somewhere or maybe schleping to various courts/dance studios/fields for your kids events?

Summer is here, enjoy.

I'm thinking of abandoning all my responsibilities, moving off the grid and becoming completely self-sufficient. I have guns, ammo, knives, and winter clothes.

Or maybe we'll just go to the zoo.

Our big trip this summer will be to the Grand Canyon in July.  Yes, I know it will be hot.

Flying into Las Vegas and will spend a few days in that area before we spend a few days in upper Arizona (Grand Canyon) and then work our way down to Middle Arizona and Phoenix where we are flying out of.  Never been there so i am looking forward to it.  If anyone here has been and has some tips/suggestions for me, it would be much appreciated?  Have 3 kids ages 7-11 so doing family stuff...so keep your "fun" recomendations that don't involve family in Vegas to yourself!

Red Rock is right outside Vegas and an easy trip with young kids. A good introduction before the Grand Canyon which to me is overwhelming at first.  Also, Hoover Dam again is not too far from Vegas and is interesting for all ages. Driving from the Grand Canyon to Phoenix one should visit Sedona.

I am doing sort of a similar trip in August when dropping my son off for school in SoCal. Flying into Phoenix on SWA for $100 (oneway) with two free bags. We are seeing The Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix which surprisingly is the top rated attraction there (and confirmed by my friends who live there) and will play some resort golf. The resorts in Phoenix are terrific. All have great pools. Staying near Camelback offers a nice day trip of hiking too.

When it is really hot and crowded, I like to stay in Flagstaff and enter the Grand Canyon from the East entrance leaving the hotel at 5: 00 AM. By the time you get to the South Rim with the heat and masses of tourists, you will have been able to enjoy some serene moments that as precious as any you will have on this Earth. If you have to deal with masses on the West and South rim, pay the money and do a helicopter tour - again just a wow life moment.

I made all my kids do all these things a la Clark Griswold when they were younger. Now as young adults they are very thankful. You are likely to have some emotional breakdowns in the heat and crowds but stay calm and savor the moment. Have a great time!!

We are staying in Sedona for a night. Also staying in page for a night. Assume when we are in page it would be a good time to hit the East rim? The crowds of the south rim do have me a little nervous. Definitely planning on early starts since we will be on eastern time zone. Was thinking Hoover damn and Death Valley when we in Vegas area, but nothing booked yet Interesting about the music Museaum. My kids are huge into instruments so wonder if it will be something they would enjoy or not??? Thanks for the tips! Sorry for typos as I'm on my phone

I've stayed there to hike into the canyon for a 10 day rafting trip. You are almost as close to the incredible Zion National Park as you are to the GC (then its another 5 hours (?) to Vegas). Or you can take 89 south to Cameron and then west to the GC East rim. It is a beautiful drive with spectacular colors and the canyon just gets bigger and bigger.

Assuming you are in Page to raft for at least a half day? and will see Horseshoe Bend and Antelope Canyon while there?

Hoover Dam is worth it to me but I am a engineer type. Death Valley is cool but after the Grand Canyon everything is pretty much the junior varsity. The kids might get worn out with all the activitiy, so an easy day here or there (such as Red Rocks , 30 minutes from Vegas) is wise. I made this mistake and my exhausted wife almost divorced me lol. I like to bet at the sports books in Vegas and see the shows but the rest holds little interest to me, especially if I was with kids.

A lot of this depends on how many days your vacation is. You cant see everything and it's best to hit the top priorities thoroughly and leave time to enjoy things. When I travel by myself it resembles the Great Race.

The Phoenix music museum is definitely for kids your age. here is the web site : https://mim.org/. I also like architecture and enjoy Taliesin West built by Frank Lloyd Wright. Maybe taking the kids to a Diamondbacks game would be fun too. Indoor baseball is a new experience for anyone who is used to Tiger Stadium and Comerica.

Yes I was thinking antelope canyon and horseshoe. Was not sure of the rafting because it's not technically in the GC is it? Was debating if it's worth it. We are in the area for 10 days and as you say there is lots to do so trying to figure what to do is a challenge! To be honest I am 50/50 on page. I debated staying 2 days in Sedona instead of one there and one in page, but not sure. I'm strongly considering the helicopter tour of the canyon as well. If so it may knock rafting out of the budget. Death Valley sounds cool, but you may be right. Got to decide if it's worth it. Be 4 hours round trip from Vegas and not sure what is there other than a little scenery and to say I was in the lowest point of North America?? Thanks!

With my GF and kids. Meeting my sister and her family out there. Currently deep in research into late summer fishing in the NW corner of the park. Truly looking forward to it. May head up to the Mason Tract next weekend.

I think we have a vacation planned. To Chicago to see stuff. Then I am taking my folks to see their relatives in Cadillac. My dad is failing at 72 and my grandmother on Mom's side is 91, so every trip could be the last for someone. I am taking my folks alone, I can only handle so many needy people at a time.

stopping in the Bay Area first to see my gradma (who is in hospice w/ end-stage Lewy Body Dimentia and couldn't come to my wedding) and see two high school/college classmates in Berkeley. Then drive down to Pasadena to see my sister-in-law. Then starting residency in two weeks, after which my life is over :-/

Actually just about every morning in May and June in San Diego is cloudy/gray.  Then someone flips a switch around noon and the sun shines the rest of the day.

Spending time at the cabin up north and trying to keep my family protected from ticks. They're the devil I tell ya. Any tips on how to keep them off my kids and lovely wife, so she doesn't hate our cabin and resent me?

Get a pen or sharp #2 pencil and write this down.......... Permethrin and Picaridin. Permethrin for the ticks. It KILLS ticks.... don't "repel" them 'cause they drop on you and will go to an area of the body without repellant eventually. You spray on your cloths and let them dry. It's good for 6-8 washes. It's odorless and won't leave stains nor discolor clothing. 4 oz. is enouph for 1 pair of socks, pants, shirt and hat. I get it from my wife (she's a part time vet and part time manipulator of me).... so either get from your vet or try Wally World. Sawyer is a good name brand. Picaridin for the dreaded mosquitoes. Here's the deal, good ole fashioned deet works awesome BUT it's greasy, smelly and erodes plastics. Personally , deets smell and greasiness doesn't bother me but it degrades my fly lines....woman and kids are the reason you avoid deet. Picaridin also is odorless and after spraying on skin will be dry. Name brands include Sawyer and Repel. Make sure you look on the bottle for percentage content. Protect the kids and your wife from East or West Nile as well as Lyme disease. In summary..... this shit works!!! PS Did you know there was a Woodtick Music festival in Hermansville, MI? PPS Rob, you should take note since ur in Paradise now.

Thank you for sharing. I will definitely try out both of these in a couple weeks when we head back up. The sheer volume of mosquitoes was ridiculous and it doesn't help that they're like fricken fighter jets up there. Fast little buggers. There's been a big increase in tick activity around our neck of the woods in the last theee years. I guess it has something to do with the growing mouse population. I'm sick of worrying about them attacking my loved ones and am ready to try anything. In fact I had a blowtorch in my amazon cart until you dropped your knowledge.

Louie..... If ur gonna be going to the cabin often, this trick is proven to reduce tick population: take 2 inch dia. PVC pipe and segment it into 4 inch long pieces. Stuff cotton balls that have been sprayed and dried with permethrin...pack them in. Spread them all over ground and encircle trees around cabin area. Mice will use cotton for their nests....and attached ticks will die a quick death. You are correct. The peak cyclical mouse population year precedes peak tick population years. People think deer are the primary mammalian host....not true....it's the damn field mice. Also, check out a product called Thermacell.... heard great things. It works well in B.C. Canada for black flies n mosquitos... I don't use though, don't like carrying extra items. Rob.... hope ur not eating too many pasties, I know I would. (Extra rutabaga)

But on the way back I plan on a return visit to our Lehto's (about 7 miles west of St Ignace on US2) for another one, plus at least a couple more frozen pasties to bring back home. Yummmmm...

do it every summer somewhere in the area; trying a smaller inland lake this year.  Pontoon, barbeque, hike/canoe/swim.  Perhaps a malted beverage or three.

Just waiting for summer camp and the season opener against Florida. Hopefully it will be a good season with a home win against OSU!
