OT - Summer is Here, Got Anything Special Planned?

Submitted by xtramelanin on

Mates,

It is that time of year when most schools get out and folks will travel.   This week it will actually be at or above normal temperatures up north for the first time in months, with great looking weather though some very cold lakes.  Its that time of year when people go on vacation or go visit grandma, go see Washington D.C, go up north, or if you're Putin, maybe invade a country to two.

So the question is this:  What are your summer plans this year, looking forward to some trips or visits, taking the family somewhere or maybe schleping to various courts/dance studios/fields for your kids events?

Summer is here, enjoy.

Two months of baseball and softball for my kids and then college visits! My son is looking at Boulder, UT, Villanova, Lehigh, Stony Brook, Case Western Reserve, Wisconsin, Illinois, BU, and Michigan. We've been to Michigan many times but will still do the official tour at some point. We've also already been to Boston, so our trips will be to Boulder and Austin, and then Philadelphia and New York. He's also participating in a baseball showcase in Jupiter, FL in August so that may change the college plan completely. Nothing like having all your balls in the air.

You will love Boulder. My middle one went there and had a great experience. She stayed there, which works for me since I'm a skier. Denver is also a hot town and I have 2 nieces that moved there and love it. great outdoors and low taxes- gotta love it.

My son is just finishing the 10th grade, so we are starting to look at colleges, as well.

We live in SE Michigan, so if he gets in to Michigan, it should be a relatively easy decision.  That being said, he goes to a pretty small private high school and is thriving there...so we are also going to look at Kalamazoo College and maybe some other small schools.

Other than that, he doesn't have any definitive opinions/thoughts on other schools or on what he may want to pursue as his profession...so we are casting a relatively wide net.  Going to the Michigan game in Bloomington in October and have a fall wedding in Madison.

We are also going to plan a Boston trip.  We were just in DC and didn't carve out time for a GW visit, which I regret.  We may go back to that region and see GW and Maryland.

Not sure that MSU is even a consideration;  we've been too effective in our efforts to brainwash our kids.  As absurd as it sounds, not sure he would feel comfortable in East Lansing.

Good luck with your search...and I hope your son gets in to Michigan!

My son is very involved in varsity baseball (when it comes to schoolwork, I would use the word distracted instead of involved) and let his math grade drop this past semester to a C, so I highly doubt he'll get into Michigan. He still wants to try. His believes getting into college isn't a "will or won't" process; it's a "could" process. Teenagers baffle me.

Boys seem to be especially wacky.  My son is bright and works hard but has ADD and is young for the grade.  It takes him a long time to get his work done...and, while he is doing well, his grades still don't reflect his effort and capabilities.

I feel badly for him because he does care and spends an inordinate amount of time on his work.  The compares to our daughter, who's in 7th grade and gets all A's without doing any homework

We discovered last fall that our son tests very well (took the PSAT's), so he will probably be in the range of where he needs to be in to get in to Michigan...but certainly not a slam dunk candidate.

He's thriving at the small private high school that he's at, so Michigan might not even be the best environment for him.

What grade is your son in?  Mine is finishing 10th grade.

Mine is a rising senior. He does not work hard but manages to have a 3.4 GPA taking AP and honors. He's borderline ADHD and you can see it in his inability to sit down and study. He does well in class and with homework but studying for tests is something else. I've sort of accepted that I can't motivate him to study and he seems fine with his own level of engagement. Not everyone is going to go to Michigan or other elite school. The thing he's really into is baseball and he mentally puts a lot into his game.

a couple late-summer trips I'll be taking this year. Going to be joining 110,000+ of my closest friends in Ann Arbor on both 9/2 and 9/9. Will be drinking beer and grilling and drinking and Cornhole and drinking and singing and more drinking. And that's just in the morning for starters...

Spending the summer (all of it) in northwest Montana near Glacier National Park. One of the benefits of being able to work remotely.

Our summer travel plans are somewhat limited early on. Our son is boarded for a open heart/Pulmonic Valvle Replacement at U of M. Praying for a quick recovery and if all is going well by the beginning of August, maybe a quick tour of the UP and family fishing trip up by the Soo.
Cheers!

Spending a week in the U.P. from Aug 12-19th. Camping at Tahquamenon Falls state park. Going to the Soo Locks, Mackinac Island, Pictured Rocks, etc. My wife and I will be tenting it and my two kids will be staying in the camper with my mom and step dad. Can't wait!

Getting out of Flordia a couple weeks in July to head to the Blue Ridge Moutains in North GA. Will hit the Bigfoot Museum in Ellijay.  I went last year and it was really cool.  I just love being up in the Mountains where life is slower and unplugged.

Just got divorced so this is my first single summer in over 20 so I'm open for anywhere/anything.

I will be taking my three boys camping for the first time during my alloted time with the kids. The ex was a big no no on any place without 800 count threads, etc. Other than that I'm thinking London for a pub crawl. I've been to the continent but have yet to make it to England. Maybe Vegas for fight at Caesars or the MGM.

Anyone have ideas for new divorcees?

No idea, bud, and sorry to hear it.

I'd say if there was something on your bucket list tht seems productive but would never, ever happen while you were married should go on the list.  For example, I would make almost immediately for the Appalachian or Pacific Coast Trails and disappear for a couple of weeks, just to give myself something to do but also the time and space to process a pretty major life change.  But really I have no idea what to say for advice, only what I'd do and again, man, sorry to hear it.

Wife and I are going to Nashville for a long weekend the 17-20. We've never been and we've heard so many good things about the city, plus it was a super cheap flight from Charlotte. Really looking forward to it, especially if the Preds win the Cup. That'll make the city even more fun.

Other than that, I plan on playing a ton of golf. As much as my wife (and wallet) will allow.

Turning forty so my high school buddies and I are going to Bend, Oregon for a weekend of whitewater rafting, copious beer drinking, sports trash talk, poker and general water based buffoonery with kayaking, paddle boarding, etc.

I cannot wait.

Visiting my brother in law for 10 days out in Victor Idaho, just across the pass from Jackson Hole, Wyoming.   Hiking, fishing, rafting, quad trips through Gros Ventre Mountain Range, etc.

My daughter is graduating from college in a week. No more tuition payments for either kid! Woohoo!

The whole family is headed to Yellowstone and environs for two weeks. I haven't been there since I was a kid. Really looking forward to it.
