OT: What are you listening to?
I'm always in the mood to find new music. I've recently been listening to Portishead and the Glass Animals.
All of this with a healthy dose of Radiohead and Kendrick Lamar makes for a truly wonderful medley of sounds going into my Memorial Day weekend
Edit: Someone asked for genres so I'll do my best here.
Portishead: trip-hop (psychedelic electronic rock stuff)
Glass Animals: alternative indie rock
Kendrick Lamar: hip-hop/rap
Radiohead: pick a genre other than country and they've dabbled in it
Little bit of everything they've ever done in this release.
At work, listening to Use Your Illusion I&II.
Lester Young & The Piano Giants right now.
In the past week - Luther Allison, Otis Rush, Jimmie Vaughan, Peter Wolf, Otis Redding, Lazy Lester, you get the idea.
Going to see Jesse Sykes at the Tractor in Seattle tonight.
I listen to a wide variety when it comes to genres. But they run the extreme all the way to Death metal. On my Ipod you are likely to hear Frank SInatra , followed by Men at Work, then Earh wind and fire , maybe Tori Amos, then Obiturary . I dont like a lot of real popular music or songs after the 90's . I have a love for bands that most people know of only one song, like Devo, or Thomas Dolby for example . Most of all though i cant go long without listening to some Entombed .
Wu Tang Clan and Kikagaku Moyo (saw them in Detroit a couple weeks back).
Aretha Franklin live @ Fillmore West, 1970 (with King Curtis & The Kingpins backing her)
and a complilation of New Orleans R&B from the early 70's called Saturday Night Fish Fry.
these two are basically played on repeat lately when i'm at work.
Kinks- Village Green Preservation Society
This morning I listened to a Clash bootleg, half of an RJD2 album, and a couple tracks from the old Easy Star All-Stars cover of OK Computer.
I was looking at everyone's current music lists, & thought "Wow, most folks are intentionally listing these very obscure artists, just so they can seem cool " ? .... then I reviewed my list, & yeah, kinda obscure, & I'm telling you all, I aint cool ....
* Lee Ritenour, "Six String Theory".
* Sco-Mule, the Live show featuring Jazz guitarist John Scofield & Government Mule.
* Jerry Reed's Greatest Hits (serriously !)
* Chris Stapelton, "Traveller"
friend turned me on to check out this artist. I guess his song Human is pretty popular. I also liked Grace.
Sam Webb...with special surprise guest Jim Harbaugh.
I've been really listening a lot to The Penis Wrinkle lately, since my buddy who writes for Pitchtent turned me on to them. Also Shrinkage and the Boners have been getting a lot of play lately on my Sportify.
Robert Randolph & the Family Band-soul/funk
Starset-sci-fi rock
Led Zeppelin and The Doors.
Stoner Rock/Metal. Lots of great riff music. I tend to gravitate towards the bands that are mostly instrumental. The ironic thing is that while this is stoner music (I don't partake in the herb), it actually helps me focus and concentrate. I find that many of the German/European bands tend to be the most innovative.
Leonardo Ortiz and Stoned Meadow of Doom are two youtube channels that do a good job posting new stuff.
Some selections
and since so many are AC/DC fans, I'll post this. The Hard Ons with Henry Rollins
Unfortunately, within a 7 day period, my favorite musician (Chris Cornell) died, and my girlfriend broke up with me, so I've had a lot of grunge in my playlists lately to adjust for my feelings, oddly enough, it's worked to cover both moods. I think the one thing listening to a lot of Soundgarden, Audioslave, Foo Fighters and some other 90's music has reinforced for me that Everlong really is one of the greatest songs ever written.
Chris Cornell - RIP - One of my musical heroes.
Soundgarden
Audioslave
Temple Of The Dog
The Charlatans - Different Days - Brit Pop/Alternative
At The Drive-In - Interalia - Alt Hard Rock
Bishop Briggs - Self Titled - Electronic Soul music
Shaed - Electronic
Bits and Pieces of unreleased new records from Dispatch, Gov't Mule, alt-J, The National, Portugal The Man.
