The best way to solve this probem, quite honestly, is for Twitter or other social media, to provide an option to restrict who can message you or comment and link to your account.  Perhaps this option exists I don't know but there are many nutty people in the world.  For some reason the internet seems to make people think it's okay to type out their unfiltered thoughts for the world to see.

I did not allow my kid to use social media growing up and I never regret that decision.

There is.  Many recruits want attention.  Again, I don't tweet recruits.

However, people need to calm down.  Recruits are a lot smarter than what some on this board give them credit for.  Do you honestly believe recruits don't (or will not) realize every fanbase has a bunch of idiots, sycophants, and asses?

I mean, these are 16-17 year old kids. A lot of them don't know anything. Looking back on HS, I was naive to a lot of stuff. I think we assume a lot of these kids are mature beyond their years because they are large humans, but just because they're 6'4, 250 lbs, and look like they're 35 doesn't change the fact that they're just a high school kid

It's certainly an exponential rise in intensity from going to a few douches at school harassing you to literally hundreds of adults harassing you. I can certainly see it being overwhelming to a 17 year going through this process for their first and only time

I wish there was a way to effectively ban people from social media. Or even the internet. I hope Solomon just remembered through the whole process that a handful of miserable people don't speak for the entire fanbase, which by and large is a very reasonable, respectable group.

But let's also not forget that this isn't a Michigan-specific problem. Anyone remember "Clemson Dan" after Gary committed last year? These people are everywhere and associate themselves with every program. From Alabama on down to Rutgers.

The blessing of social media is also it's curse: everyone gets a voice. And some people just flat out shouldn't have a voice on specific topics. On some topics, some people just need to be locked up and have the key thrown away.

I don't tweet recruits.  At the same time, I don't think tweeting at recruits will ever stop nor is it likely the determining factor in any recruit's decision.

Every fanbase has its knuckleheads.  I believe substantially all of the recruits understand this (and would understand this after some explanation).  I give them more credit than some of the people on this board.

The kids I've dealt with usually think it's creepy when ppl they don't know are tweeting them. Friends and family of the recruit and media are usually fair game. If I were a fan of a certain school, I'd hope no one was tweeting prospects of the school I liked. Every kid is different, but it usually has a chance to do more harm than good.

don't even follow recruits on twitter. People need to understand they are 16-17 year old high school kids. Why as a grown adult are you stalking them on twitter?

Following Twitter accounts is essentially what mgoblog does on a regular basis and part of the reason why you joined this blog.  Hence, indirectly, you are participating in the "stalking" that you condemn.

Seriously, people...this is not a national crisis.  Yes, don't tweet at recruits.  However, there is no reason to go insane and freak out when people do (and people will continue to do so).  Every fanbase will have people who care too much and tweet.

The recruits are also not dumb to believe that all the assholes reside with one fanbase.  If anything, I'm offended by the sanctimonious posters who believe recruits are too stupid to realize (or eventually realize) that no fanbase is perfect.

Just don't tweet, I get that many of you feel like you're colaborating and have something positive to contribute, but your help is not needed. It's like when somebody has an accident or collapses on the street, yeah, it's good that you don't want to kick them or stomp them, but even if you want to help the best thing to do is call the emergency services and let them handle the situation. Many times peoples' intentions are good but they don't know what they're doing and end up worsening the situation. To me its kind of selfish to try to be the hero and step in just for glory.

go hang out by their high schools and park across the street of their homes in windowless white vans, right?  I mean, I can't give up all my free-time activities.
