OT: Ann Arbor's Mike Tirico Replacing Bob Costas as Olympics Host
I'm a Mike Tirico fan and an Olympics fan, so I'm happy about this. Tirico moves into the big chair starting with the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea.

Good.
February 9th, 2017 at 12:56 PM ^
Bob Costas is the worst. I have no patience for gun control lectures during sporting events.
February 9th, 2017 at 1:01 PM ^
Are you a snowflake?
February 9th, 2017 at 1:05 PM ^
Sports commentators and actors are compelled to share their brilliance with us on all subjects.
February 9th, 2017 at 1:45 PM ^
I cannot stand it, either. They're abusing their power of having a camera and TV broadcast to spew their terrible political opinions and it's just nauseating.
February 9th, 2017 at 3:48 PM ^
Your post reads like sarcasm although probably not intended.
February 9th, 2017 at 1:55 PM ^
It's not even that. Costas just likes to hear himself talk.
February 9th, 2017 at 3:30 PM ^
February 9th, 2017 at 4:42 PM ^
He has been the worst person in sports broadcasting for a while.
February 9th, 2017 at 1:10 PM ^
well we kinda need gun control reform in this country....
February 9th, 2017 at 1:18 PM ^
And that debate should not take place on Sunday Night Football. You know what else we need? Entitlement reform. Do I want to hear Bob Costas's take on that? Absolutely fucking not.
February 9th, 2017 at 1:46 PM ^
February 9th, 2017 at 1:50 PM ^
Thanks, I didn't realize that was an option.
February 9th, 2017 at 1:17 PM ^
You can work that out at the range, if needed.

Insert Vincent Smith double bang gif
February 9th, 2017 at 2:18 PM ^
I don't care for Costas either, but it has nothing to do with that one time he mentioned that we have a gun culture. It's because he works too hard to build the drama for every single moment of a sporting event.
February 9th, 2017 at 1:03 PM ^
Does this mean that Bob Costas can start aging naturally again? His portrait (undoubtedly stashed in his attic) must look terrible by now.
February 9th, 2017 at 1:59 PM ^
Only after he fufills his term of service in the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.
February 9th, 2017 at 1:05 PM ^
I really liked Costas and I'll miss him. He will always be the voice of the Olympics to me. That being said Tirico has always been one of my favorite broadcasters so hard to be too upset!
Here's hoping they keep Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinski around.
February 9th, 2017 at 1:37 PM ^
Counterpoint: Costas was a sanctimonious buffoon who cared way more about the feeling and mystique of the Olympics than the actual sports themselves.
February 9th, 2017 at 2:08 PM ^
Counter to your counter: Some of us really get into the "feeling and mystique of the Olympics" and appreciate a broadcast that captures it.

This morning Costas said that if Jim McKay was #1, then he (Costas referring to himself) was #1a. HE ACTUALLY SAID THAT!!! The arrogance!
February 9th, 2017 at 2:20 PM ^
As an older person (DOB: 1961), Jim McKay will always be the voice/face of the Olympic Games to me: Sapporo '72, Munich '72, Innsbruck '76, Montreal '76 are the most memorable ones for me.
Having said that, I do really like Mike Tirico as a sportscaster & sports journalist, and I expect he'll be great as the new anchor for NBC's Olympic Games coverage.

Yeesh. The 2018 Olympics are in South Korea. That will suck for the viewers in the states. Nothing will be live during the days here.
Also, Mike had to have known he'd become the main Olympics anchor upon agreeing to go to NBC. I'm happy for him. The guy likely got a big pay increase.
February 9th, 2017 at 1:36 PM ^
All NBC shows live is women's gymnastics (only the Americans) and swimming anyway. Small loss. If you want to see any sports other than those, you have to stream them yourself, and you can do that any time you like.
February 9th, 2017 at 1:41 PM ^
Well sure, but I hate watching sports that are not live. Sometimes I have to do it for Michigan games (like when some selfish prick schedules a wedding on a football Saturday), but I'd like to avoid it at all costs.
February 9th, 2017 at 2:37 PM ^
I can promise you that gymnastics and swimming would not have been aired live in the 2018 olympics regardless of the host nation.
February 9th, 2017 at 5:23 PM ^
And regardless of the host for NBC's coverage.
Unless .....
- Ice Swimming - where athletes must swim through surface ice of varying thickness with the option of attaching a mini ice-breaker device to the top of their caps.
- Ice Gymnastics - which is identical to the gymnastics events of the Summer Games but with that added twist that all aperatuses (as well as the floor surface for the floor routines) are covered with a thin sheet of ice.
I'd watch that.
February 9th, 2017 at 2:05 PM ^
Actually I think we will get live coverage. In Canada and Russia, all of the NBC channels (NBCSN, MSNBC, CNBC, etc.) combined to show every single hockey game live. And you can bet your ass I watched all of them. Olympic hockey is excellent.
February 9th, 2017 at 2:13 PM ^
The tape delay issue used to be much larger when NBC broadcast everything through the main channel and didn't offer alternatives. But now they go full-press with affiliate networks and there are live sports all over the dial. Plus high-quality streams with good announcer teams available online for sports like gymnastics that NBC likes to "dramatize" and refine for television.
NBC has comprehensively fixed previous objections to coverage and freely offers streams without blackouts that attempt to preserve their ratings. I actually think they've done a great job, which is saying something with the way I used to slaughter their coverage.
February 9th, 2017 at 2:34 PM ^
It's excellent now, but we don't know if the NHL is going to agree to it yet or not for 2018. That would suck.
February 9th, 2017 at 2:36 PM ^
Well yes, they will be live, but only when most people in this country will be sleeping. That was my point.
February 9th, 2017 at 7:57 PM ^
February 9th, 2017 at 1:55 PM ^
Tirico will look MUCH better with pink-eye.
Costas was a friggin' mess.
February 9th, 2017 at 2:16 PM ^
I didn't think about it quite like that when I came upon this thread, but....yeah, you're right. Costas with pinkeye was a tough watch. I would probably be much more amenable to Mike Tirico as well under similar circumstances.
February 9th, 2017 at 2:02 PM ^
Now tell me that NBC is getting rid of Meredith Viera and Matt Lauer as co-hosts of the Opening Ceremonies and we're golden.
February 9th, 2017 at 2:18 PM ^
That whole network needs a good house cleaning from top to bottom.
February 9th, 2017 at 2:18 PM ^
I'll always remember him for the pink eye. My friend had a funny theory that Costas was into face sitting and got the pink eye from a Russian stripper.

Wow. Didn't realize there was such dislike for Costas around here.
Slightly OTOT, but did anyone see Costas go off on the XFL in the new 30 for 30? Good stuff. Especially the clips of the his interview with Vince McMahon (who also wants to kick Bob's ass, apparently).
February 9th, 2017 at 4:51 PM ^
I may be in the minority but I liked the XFL. The XFL did the skycam before anyone else did!!! "He hate me" on the uniformz... come on man, that's pure gold! The scrum to see who gets the ball first? Loved it -- better than random chance of a coin flip.
February 9th, 2017 at 3:57 PM ^
The only thing Costas was good at was baseball in the 1980's for NBC's game of the week.
