Kerry Coombs to Cinci w/Luke Fickell

Submitted by ypsituckyboy on

Looks like OSU's CB coach, Kerry Coombs, is headed to Cinci to be (presumably) Fickell's DC. Many on the board may not have heard of him, but he is regarded as one of the top recruiters in the country and has obviously done a good job with OSU's secondary during his tenure there. Definitely not a positive for OSU, although I'm sure Urban, like Harbaugh, is quite adept at hiring top notch replacements.

This is good news for UM for obvious reason, and bad news for a school like MSU. Could easily see Fickell/Coombs use their very strong Ohio ties to begin to poach the good players that are left in Ohio after OSU/UM have had their pick, which is a territory that D'Antonio and Co have done quite well in in the past.

Over his career as DC at OSU he has delivered a top 5 defense almost every single year. Not to mention that he is a high character guy that has served OSU well on the recruiting trail. No matter who Meyer gets to replace Luke Fickell, OSU loses more than it can gain. The guy has 21years in as a Buckeye. Not to mention he was 108-0 as an all Ohio wresler. The guy is a worker. If UC gives him a chance to find his way he is the type that might stay at UC for many years just waitng for Meyer to retire then taking over at OSU. Dude bleeds scarlet and gray.

If he is successful at UC, and can consistently deliver bowl appearances, 7-8+ win seasons, and knock off a few big games every now and then, he will essentially be setting himself up for a OSU takeover down the road. This is actually really good for OSU in the long run because imagine if Fickell stayed for another 4-5 years as DC for Meyer and then Meyer retires. Fickell would almost certainly be the guy who would most deserve the HC job, but there would be a large group of folks who would see him as uncertain and unproven as a HC. But if he goes to UC and is successful, coupled with the fact that he will have all those Ohio recruiting ties, he will be a lock as the next HC at OSU. Fickell taking the UC job is absolutely perfect for him, both today, and his future.

Like the OP states, losing Coombs is pretty big deal as far as recruiting goes. I think he was the guy who got Damon Webb out of Cass Tech and opened the door to UM's pipeline school for OSU.

Jordan was not a long time Michigander, but had arrived in the state of Michigan late his HS career, so that he really did not have any real reason to be considered a prospect for which Michigan might have a real home state advantage.

The Jordan recruitment probably does not really bolster the narrative of top Michigan HS players choosing OSU.

That was a thing when M was in a tailspin.  But it probably is over now.

OSU is a recruiting juggernaut.  A lot of kids will want to go to OSU regardless of who the coach is.  Tressel could go to Cincy and (insert bad coach name here) could go to OSU and he'd never be able to compete with OSU for the top players in the state.

Had very highly ranked classes almost every year, if fact there was only 1 year he didnt. This years team has been UM's best in at least 10 years and almost every starter was a Hoke recriut. You can bash Hoke for many things, but he could recruit very well. Maybe Hoke will end up at OSU as DC ?? UM couldnt be so lucky....

Yes and no. Hoke's classes were highly ranked but with a large emphasis on the Midwest. There would rarely be a skill position athlete like the David Long, McDoom, or Crawford types from Cali or Florida. Hoke depended more on plodding linemen with a few exceptions (a large one being Peppers). Moreover, Harbaugh is recruiting multiple QBs and actually developing them.

Harbaugh also emphasizes more speed and athleticism and has a much broader recruiting base.

Carr's classes always felt different than Hoke's for the same reasons. Carr may have been uninventive in terms of scheme, but he focused on skill athletes in Texas, California and non-Midwest much more than Hoke ever did.

Just so everyone knows this has not been confirmed.  There are some rumors that Urban is going to do whatever it takes in keep Coombs including offering him the DC position.

Meyer is attempting to keep Coombs... There is a co-coordinator spot open now too so it would make sense to promote Coombs into that spot. I think he's been their CB/secondary coach for some time so it looks as if he's qualified for the DC job anyway. Truth be known, I would guess it's Coombs' recruiting prowess that Urban is trying to keep.

this is going to be far worse for MSU, Kentucky, and Pitt than it ever will be for OSU. Those schools were able to pick off a lot of those 3*/4* tweener guys in Ohio that Michigan and OSU passed on. If Cinci can keep some of those guys in state, that cuts deep into the very regional recruiting territory Pitt, Kentucky, and MSU rely on

This is exactly what I was thinking when I saw this thread - if this hire actually does take place as reported, then a lot of schools in Ohio and neighboring states that rely a lot more on Ohio recruiting than Ohio State does probably are going to feel it pretty quickly. A good move for Cincy in that sense if it does take place, I would think.

Coombs is a god in Cincy. Maybe he'll have better luck this time around, but he never kept any elite talent from the schools here. Most of the best players UC have had over the years are from Columbus and Cleveland.

I live here and I really cant stand the Bison or watching them. It's probably true though. They've had home field advantage pretty much all the way up to the title game. For like the last four years. We all know how them candy ass refs make friends in front of a home crowd and take sides. They think of the movie Fargo and how these crazy bastards roll up here.

it is normal for them to try to get one from other schools. this is why some guys wait to the last minuet to see . now nothing is stopping them from not announce they are leaving (coach) right after signing day. not fair kids should be able to pull their letter.

Don't they have Schiano coaching their secondary? I assume he might move into the DC role, and would likely do a great job with it. He had Rutgers D looking really solid with low level recruits. Watching Brown/Schiano and Harbaugh/Meyer over the next 5 years will be fun. We're all winners for getting to watch that take place

Anything that Meyer does is calculated for him to come out on top. Even though it's never in the student athlete's best interest or his assistant coaches.

Fuck him - Fuck Ohio State !

Yeah I'm motha fuckin bitter. Only the second time I've been to the mgo site since the worst lost I've ever witnessed to those pices of shit imbreed swine. Soft motha fuckin soft ass football team we had 2 out of the last 3wks of our regular season. Our upper classmen made too many mistakes, instead of stepping up and defining what "clutch" is. God bless Michigan, may Harbaugh live forever.
