Do you love Michigan athletics? Are you compliant? Do you need a job?
Saw this posted on the law school job board (actually, it was posted earlier, then disappeared, and now is back). Anyway, I don't know if this has anything to do with the NCAA's recent visits, but it seems likely.
Athletics NCAA Compliance Assistant: The University of Michigan invites applications for a full-time, temporary position with the Athletic Department’s Compliance Services Office. The position is immediately available and will conclude July 31, 2010 with the potential to be extended through April 30, 2011. The successful candidate will report to the Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance, assisting in the operation of the athletics compliance program. Duties include preparation and organization of required NCAA and Big Ten conference forms and reports; monitoring of compliance-related activities; maintenance of compliance records; and other duties as assigned. Successful applicants must have strong verbal and written communication skills, Windows-based computing skills (e.g., word processing, spreadsheet, etc.). Bachelor’s degree required. Law or Master’s degree preferred. Remuneration is $10 per hour, no benefits. Please note that the review of applications will begin immediately. Candidates will be interviewed on an on-going basis, until the position is filled. Minorities and women are strongly encouraged to apply. Please send resume, cover letter and at least three references by March 15, 2010 to . . .
$10/hr...
hahahahahaha...
However, as P.T. Barnum once said, "There's a sucker born every minute." (Or was that Jenna Jameson???)
I'm sure the position will be filled quickly.

Dang, I'm way overpaying my assistant at $15/hr!
March 12th, 2010 at 11:24 AM ^
Why in the hell did they charge me so much to get it? At that rate I would never be able to buy a house, car, or pay back a student loan.
Soooooo.... they want a secretary with a Masters of law?
but with an MBA, there is absolutely no way I would work for $10 an hour.
I guess if you want to be a coach someday and have a JD, then this is the job for you!
I have a Bachelors of Communication, I'm making $14 plus time and a half over 40 hours (which I always get), and I am GROSSLY underpaid.
The Applicants they get will be interesting.

Says the guy with 7130 MGoPoints........

You don't suppose the fact that they haven't given me a raise in my last two promotions has anything to do with my possibly not putting in 100% effort at all times, do you?
Edit: To be more accurate, I now converse directly with customers and vendors daily, and send out all kinds of documentation without any supervision whatsoever, and they're still paying me the same as they did when I helped a guy open boxes in shipping.

I'm just joking around......it was intended to be a light-hearted jab.

OH, I figured, but I've got a stick up my butt about it. Just because the job market is tight does not mean my degree is worthless and my cost of living doesn't increase!!!
Customers rave about my new format for manuals, you know.

Never underestimate the importance of documentation. I don't, I have spent several years, trying to get others to understand why small amounts of time spent documenting as you go along, lead to much better products/projects that save money in the long run.

the oft-proposed, rarely implemented: "Write the documentation before the software."

Give me your boss' email, I will write you a sweet letter of recommendation that highlights your incredibly high standards for posting on mgoblog.

gotten your TPC reports in in weeks now. Even the Bobs are raising their eyebrows.
maybe an OSU grad will apply as his job at McDonald's is a real downer.
"Piss Boy!"
While $10/hr is obviously not much pay, I think they will get a fair number of law grads applying. A lot of recent law school grads have been deferred by the firms who offered them jobs, meaning they have a job in theory, but will not start working for awhile and are looking for something to do in the interim. Other law grads don't have a job at all because of this economy. For example, I graduated in December 09, but won't start work until October 2010 - others have been deferred significantly longer. I recently found something to do in the interim, but I would've seriously considered this job otherwise, if for no other reason but I think it would be a cool experience.
Looks good on your resume, helps make connections if you are interested in sports law in the future. It's not the sort of job anyone will relocate for -- if you are already here and don't have anything better going, why not apply? Beats waiting tables.

The last think Michigan needs is a guy who is only doing this job for a few months (OK maybe 6 - 8 months) before starting their "real" career. It would take at least 2-3 months to understand the job and do it on your own (without someone constantly looking over your back).
Then, the recent grad would only have a few months left until they started a new job. Michigan needs someone who wants compliance/ football/ coaching as a career goal and will put all of the time and effort required.
If this is market rate, fine, but IMO, you get what you pay for.

you'll also be getting free drinks and meals from Freep creeps sniffing around the athletic dept in general and football compliance specifically.
I'm sure they will get someone who wants to use the job as a springboard. Entry-level assistants are notoriously underpaid in all sports; compliance is apparently no exception. Maybe they should change the ad so something like this:
"Do you like striking fear into the hearts of everyone you meet? Do you want to be like the Vowelless One someday? We'll teach you how and we'll even pay you ten dollars an hour to learn."
If you don't remember the Vowelless one, google Chuck Smrt. He was once the most feared investigator on the NCAA staff. He helps schools now, but old-timers probably still quake when they hear his name.
Unfortunately, there will be a lot of applicants to chose from due to the economy, and a lot of recent law school grads who haven't found jobs yet. In addition to the money, the fact that it's only temporary is a real bummer. Might be nice to get into the department if it was a job with some staying power.
Does this mean after April 30th, 2011 we will go back to non-compliance?
I can only see a retired person who loves Michigan doing this.
March 12th, 2010 at 10:24 AM ^
does the compliance guy get free road game / bowl game trips, football tickets included to monitor compliance when away from campus?

After reading this, I feel a little better about my job and salary.
Wait, no I don't.
