[LOCKED] Lamont Wade "Second Level"

Submitted by DJEasy12 on

So, apparently the staff told Lamont Wade that he was a "second-level" player and needed to come to camp for an offer...now he says F U and he's the #58 player in the 247 Composite:

I'm totally cool with the come to camp and so we can evaluate you part, but....tact!! This is an Urban Meyer move, and not that great of a look for the staff.

MOD EDIT - I think we're going to lock this one just so the news stays here. I was hoping that maybe this one would go a little better than the first, but it isn't really, and I do in retrospect agree that maybe the first one should have been locked as a cautionary tale. My bad, folks. As always, we can talk about this one if you want. Either send a tweet or post in the mod sticky. - LSA

I'll say what I said in the other thread on this topic: a camp condition was warranted. This is a staff that puts a lot less faith in service rankings than others and trusts their own eye test. I'm not disputing that this player may be incredibly talented, but there are legitimate questions based on his size and level of competition (while playing on a completely and utterly dominant team) alone.

I have no trouble believing the young man might be offended if told the staff would like to evaluate him personally prior to making an offer. There is precedence for this, and when a young man is offered by a large number of heavy hitters based on tape and the limited live action the coaches have been able to secure many, naturally, due to the boost in ego, a result of all these offers, are going to become big headed for a while. And in the case of it being your favorite school, there would be the personal affront as well. I mean if there is one school you would hope makes an offer based on what the others have, it would be the favorite.

The difficulty for me is both the confusion of the Swenson incident from last season, and the fact that Harbaugh, personally, and as instruction to his staff, would make sure to never refer to a potenial offeree as anything other than in a positive light. You needn't lie or mislead a young man but, especially the way he espouses the evolution of Michael Jordan and how important this is for association, it would be in direct conflict.

Jim Harbaugh doesn't seem to be the type to make the same mistake twice. Wouldn't it be much easier to say, "John Doe, your film is remarkable and based on that film we have an extremely high level of interest in you. We know what you can do, but as is often the case based on film alone, there are still a few questions we have. We're certain these can be answered when you visit, yada, yada, yada........ Not as smooth as Jim or these practiced recruiters but knowing the difference between gauche and panache, Jim would chose the later, imo.

Well boo fucking hoo. So every kid that is ranked highly by some subjective ranking system deserves an offer from every school in the country sight unseen? Is that what he expects? Did he make his mommy call Harbaugh and bitch at him like all of these stories about parents of millennials calling their kid's bosses to complain that little Johnny didn't get his promotion? I hope Harbaugh told this kid to kiss his ass.

Shut the fuck up. Do you believe 247's evaluations or Harbaugh's on a 5'8" db? If the player is complaining about having to come to a camp to show off his talents then he isn't a true competitor, and Harbaugh wouldn't want him anyway. Harbaugh is all about the meritocracy and competing to earn your spot, and this kid seems like a little bitch that isn't willing to do just that.

If he doesn't want to compete and win titles that's on him. The country club atmosphere is over. When Joudan Lewis the best corner in the country is talking about freshman coming in and gunning for his spot I don't have time for guys who won't even give a look in camp.

Amen to this. I was actually so angry at seeing this on Twitter, I responded to him (which I never do). I said, and I will say now, this staff wants players that love to compete. Some players would have taken that as a challenge, this guy took it as disrespect. Obviously Michigan got their answer on what type of player this guy really is.

It's it possible that the kid was told this? Yes; is it also possible that he may have taken out of context from the coaches? Yes. The camp situation can be taken both ways as well. If the kid doesn't have the means or transportation to make it, a camp invite is a non-starter. However from the staff's perspective if they need more time to study and evaluate the prospect then they are perfectly fine stating that. Hopefully it works out well on both ends.

consider 1st level?  Top 50? Top 25?  If so they aren't wrong are they?

Not sure exactly how much of a "dream school" Michigan really was if he wasn't interested in camping and experiencing the football program first hand.
