OT: File under: Who approves this crap?
Not sure if this has been discussed yet, but saw this article in the Seattle Times regarding a UW infographic advising women how to do their makeup and hair for cheer-team. It's really pissed a lot of people off here, including those in the cheer community who feel it belittles the athletic nature of cheer. More than anything, I just wonder how the hell does this stuff get approved? People in charge are in charge just because...

I'm married and have been for a long time, so however anyone other than my wife wants to desecrate their flesh is fine by me. I think it makes you look trashy. Obviously a lot of people disagree.
Also those stupid fucking ear plugs need to go. They remind me of National Geographic magazine from the 80's. And I'm not hiring anyone sporting those things.
I am too, but there's a gulf between saying "I don't find tattoos on women attractive" and saying something like "Why mess with perfection?" The latter implies that you feel you know better than someone else how they ought to manage their own bodies - basically the same as this:

I'm stating it directly. My opinion is the correct one. All other opinions re: tattoos on women are incorrect.
So you are telling me that you wouldn't appreciate if the Mrs. came home one day sporting one of these, in your honor of course....

While I might appreciate the gesture, she knows better than to do something like that I think.
I just see blah blah blah beautiful girl blah blah blah
I can totally see why people are upset. They forgot the most important part: outfit must be made of bacon.

for the male cheerleaders, I'm perfectly fine with it. And dance and cheer seem different to me- dance is performance while cheer is supposed to be a sport? Don't know why they are grouped together.

that it's the very whiny and loud minority that is squawking about this stuff. And by saying minority I'm doing the word disservice because of how small the percentage of the population is that actually gives a fuck about all this new microaggression shit. Microminority would be a better word. Social media gives this shit the attention it so richly does not deserve.

Never could figure out why anybody should pay attention to any cheerleader at a game, whether they're male or female.

I happen to like sprinkles on a doughnut. I suppose your Christmas tree doesn't have any of those useless sparkly light things or flashy ornaments.
April 28th, 2016 at 10:48 AM ^
Spinkles on anything are useless.
Maybe I have an old soul, but always as a child, and still as a young person, I could never figure out why all the other kids liked sprinkles? WTF DO THEY ADD? They have no taste, if I wanted crunch on my donut or ice cream I would want nuts...they're just color. Until my taste buds or intestinal tract grows a pair of eyes and a taste for the aesthetic I'LL PASS ON THE FUCKING USELESS SPRINKLES.
Sorry, I've been due for a tirade against sprinkles for like 23 years.
Nuts on donuts or ice cream. Can't stand it.
My personal feeling - and I usually keep it to myself because I have friends who either cheered themselves or who have daughters who cheer - is that cheering, while obviously athletic, is belittling to women at its very core. It's essentially girls cheering on the boys as they get to go out and do the important work. (I admit that as a young girl, I had fantasies about playing football and making the big play rather than wearing a cheerleader outfit). It also gives men (and other women) the opportunity to comment on women's bodies in a socially acceptable and public way, and that shouldn't be acceptable. Even if you don't say it, you think it -- I know I have. Apologies to any cheerleaders on the board -- I don't like to cut down the efforts of other women -- but that element of cheerleading has always rubbed me the wrong way.
sitting behind me at the game that shall not be mentioned. He was critiquing the Michigan cheerleader's weights. It was pretty bad.
At least the ones that cheer on the sidelines for Michigan have a brain in their heads.

But Imma guess that the Spartan fan behind you had a hot "Spartan Bob" build, as he was criticizing young women's bodies as they did an athletic activity.
crusty and shrively. No self awareness either. He got mad when the Michigan fans booed the band and then he started in on the cheerleaders. Good memories. Dear Lord, we just HAVE to beat them this year and shut them up. LOVED not hearing from them all March Madness.
That is, with respect to cheering in general. It seems anachronistic, with the cheerleaders being "accessories" to the game. (I suppose you could make the same argument about the band - except they don't make the bandmembers march about in skimpy outfits. Thank God.) It's predominantly a female activity, and there's no denying the sexualization of it. To each their own (Murica!), but it's not my cup o' tea and I'm glad my daughter is not interested in it.
For all of that, UW's guidelines did not bother me a bit. To the extent you're going to have cheerleaders, there's no point being cryptic about the standards.
As someone who was IN the MMB, the band is CLEARLY an accessory to the game. But I never saw a problem with that. Yeah, there are some band people who don't get this, and I find that silly. People are there to watch football, and we were there to play after touchdowns and big defenisve stops and to play a bunch of familiar tunes at halftime to pass the time until the 2nd half. The band is ATMOSPHERE, and if you've been to away games where the band isn't there, I think you notice it more where the band isn't there. It's like "hey, where'd the band go"???
We were there to make noise and support the team and hopefully entertain at least SOME people during halftime and pregame.
I suppose you could say all the same things about the cheerleaders. They might seem surpurfluous to some, but they would most likely be missed if they were gone. I tend to prefer the co-ed squads that do athletic lifts and throws and tend to lead cheers to the all-female "dance" teams that seem more sexualized to me, but I can't deny that there is an aspect of sexualization to all of cheerleading.
I feel sorry for you... I couldn't imagine trying to enjoy life with all that pent up anger inside
April 28th, 2016 at 10:01 AM ^
Don't feel sorry for me; the last thing I am is a victim.
April 28th, 2016 at 10:13 AM ^
Heading to Rio to participate in the long jump? Because determining that if someone has a reasoned opinion against cheering they must also be unhappy and filled with pent up-anger is quite a leap.
April 28th, 2016 at 10:19 AM ^
I was thinking the exact same thing. I'm not angry about this and I don't want to take cheerleading away from people who enjoy it. This is just how I personally feel about it.
April 28th, 2016 at 10:33 AM ^
No it's the assumption or implication that the girls are beneath another group or relegated to a lesser role because the boys are assumed to be doing something more important.
In HS, it's common to see female cheerleaders at female competitions (BB for example). What's your rant gonna be then?

A lot of posts in this thread are saying "let's be real." Men like to look at attractive women in tiny outfits. It is what it is. Ok, then, let's be real. Cheerleading in its most basic form is women merely cheering as men do the work. Fortunately, it has evolved over the years, and become more athletic, more skill-based, more team-oriented. But let's be real. The vast majority of men on here aren't appreciating the skill of it. And while a few may have daughters who participate in cheer competitions and get the same satisfaction as a baseball or football player might out of being a member of an athletic team, cheering, in its most basic form, is atrractive women cheering for the men. Let's be real.
I have no problem with the poster. It's a little ridiculous, but I think it just lays out the job requirements. A womsn has a choice whether or not she wants to be a part of that.

Strawman response.
I wasn't talking about let's be real or what other's motivations are. I was addressing YOUR post and YOUR words...
If you want to bend the discussion to what you think other men think, that's different that addressing,
"it's essentially girls cheering on the boys as they get to go out and do the important work."
Thanks making an assumption. It's not fact. That's a classest, sexist, segregating statement to make and not backed up by cogent thought.
I've said my peace, you've said yours, it's over. Thanks!
I can't think of a time when I've ever seen (or heard of) all-male cheerleaders cheering on a female team...
Why do you hate 2 of the most amazing things in life....

So was the post a joke or the article pulled? Did the article spur outrage or lawyer calls?
Also intriguing: the Seattle Times' error page:
Uff da!
You’ve come to a dead end.
"Girl about town lipstick". LOL. What the hell is that. And I have no idea what's wrong with a ponytail. Honestly, you should be able to wear your hair whatever way you please.
Yea I don't get the no ponytail. I have long hair and I can't imagine having to do an athletic activity with my hair in my face the whole time...

That's crazy shit right there.
