Thank you Kobe

Last and final game of a hall of fame career. I know most guys on the board are not Kobe fans, but it's only right to give his respect. The last of a dying breed. The black mamba, have a happy and healthy retirement. Go blue

anybody who plays as many games as Kobe did is going to rack up a bunch of assists. The more relevant statistic is assists per game. Kobe is 134th all time in  that category (3 spots behind the immortal Foots Walker. Foots Walker?!? How have I never heard about him?) Not bad, but not 29th all time, either. Let's not forget he played a large portion of his career with Shaq or Pau, two of the better big men of recent times. With the double teams Kobe was drawing, he should have been able to garner more assists than he did, especially considering how much time he had the ball in his hands.

Michael Jordan, a fitting comp for Kobe is 93rd all time in assist per game at 5.25, more than 1/2 an assist per game more than Kobe, and he was passing to Wennington and Will Perdue in the post, or that stiff with the career-long migraine. Did Kobe have a John Paxson, Steve Kerr, or Craig Hodges to pass to? In other words, a marksmen that could pad his assist totals by nailing 3's? We'll never know because Kobe never established those guys, unless you think Derek Fisher was some sort of deadly shooter.

The original comment that I was replying to said something about Kobe being selfish. Yes, he got some assists in his career, but he had the ball in his hands an awful lot of the time. So how do we quantify selfishness? The best stat I can find is the Hollinger Assist Ratio.

this is "the percentage of a player's possessions that ends in an assist". In essence, it's not only measuring the player's ability to rack up assists and avoid turnovers, but also his passing tendency relative to his shooting tendency

If you look at that metric for this season, Kobe placed 41st among 63 qualifying players, i.e., in the bottom half of the league. He was well behind noted chucker Carmelo Anthony. How is that possible?

FWIW, in the Lynn Swann as USC AD thread, I predicted Kobe would put up 50 shot attempts tonight. He ended up 22 for 50.

I AM THE KNOWLEDGE. ST3 out.

Yeah, Kobe's probably an asshole and if I had to guess, it probably was rape which is just awful so, no, he'd never been my favorite Laker on any of their many team iterations - good and bad.  But if you're going to tee off on him for being generically an asshole, you'll also have to do the same to many other famous athletes.

In the end, though, he was a transcendent, albeit polarizing talent whose first ballot Hall of Fame career could almost be deserving of two separate HoF inductions for #8 and for #24.  And he was front and center for five of the ten championship seasons I've been fortunate enough to witness during my lifetime for my favorite team.  For that, I'll always be grateful.  There's been a lot of critcism of Kobe, some of it justified, some of it jealous.  And it might be true that he wouldn't have been this polarizing had he been, well... less of an asshole psychopath.  But then he wouldn't be Kobe - it's the price of admission and the payoff was a 20-year career with five rings.

As a fan, I'd pay that price any day of the week and twice on Sundays

ps - not going to defend Kobe on the other stuff, but I'm 110% sure that Samaki Walker deserved to get punched.

Kobe is one of the best of all time.    The superstars from the 90s are all in their late 30s (Duncan, Garnett, Pierce, etc.   The league will soon have no one that started their career before 2000.

Amazing NBA night. God I love this game because of nights like tonight. We witnessed one of the greatest hanging it up, and saw the next generation team set a new NBA record. Epic!

To drop 60 on his last game is legendary regardless of shots. I've never been a Kobe fan but always respected the hell out of his game and he's one the best to ever do it.

I would list him among the top 50, but consider this the opinion of a former NBA fan that also, if forced to chose honestly, would also include Hondo, although much of his career will be remembered as a 6th man, but could affect the outcome of  game in so many ways. Impossible to defend properly without becoming tired due to his constant movement and seeming incapable of exhaustion, this allowed the Celtics so many opportunities, normally late in games, either through him sprinting away  from a tired defender fo finish a break or in some way beneffitting a teammate, his contributions were real and consistent.

Kobe is also among the top 50,a result, I think  that would have occurred in any era, but the premium placed on scorers today while playing defense at a high level are what separates this generation from the  past, imo.

But due to the rule changes, I have no idea if Hondo (John Havlicek) for those trulty unaware, was even considered for the honor, but yes sir, Borges, I think you are correct in placing Kobe in that special club.

I was never a Kobe guy but I've always respected his game. The thing that got me was his recent contract, huge cap hit. That's what separates the way US pro teams do business over the European pro teams for instance. In Europe they generally pay you for what you can do for me now versus what you have done for me in the past. I'm sure Lakers fans will be happy to have that cap room to go out and work on building a contending team.

I respect Kobe as a player and I do think he is deserving of every kudos he has received. The man could really play when he was healthy. It was cool he could drop 60 as he left the league. Tip of the cap to Kobe.

And that amounted to what in the context of this NBA season? Didn't the Lakers still finish bottom two in the league standings? I'm sorry if I don't give a damn that someone scored 60 on 50 shots for a 17-win team. And, honest question, how many of his 12 free throw attempts were in the 4th quarter?

It's funny. The vast majority of people on this board defended Patrick Kane and kept saying "wait for the facts", and "innocent until proven guilty."

And people say race isn't an issue still.

....You do realize the Kobe rape case happened over a decade ago and Kobe pretty much admitted something happened that wasn't consenual right?

Also, in the Kane case, the DNA evidence didn't match the accuser's scenario. Not to mention it became very bizarre with the mother's actions and the fake rape kit.

I think one of the bigger issues we have with race is lazily comparing two unlike scenarios and saying "SEE, IF SOMEONE WAS X INSTEAD OF Y, THINGS WOULD BE DIFFERENT".

The public is not the same as MGoBlog.

In the public, athletes (all men really) are routinely condemned as rapists based solely on the accusation alone (as was the cas for both Winston and Kane). Usually in the case of athletes their fanbase and institution vehemently defends them (as was the case for both Winston and Kane).

How did MGoBlog react to each? I've tried using the search function to check, but can't really find anything.

In the "mass public" Kane received the "guilty before proven innocent" treatment just like every athlete receives (with the hometown fans usually vehemently defending their guy, same as Winston).

The person comparing Kane to Kobe was speaking specifically about MGoBlog.
