Tigers, Pistons and Wings, Oh My!

Submitted by xtramelanin on

Mates,

The Pistons won a road game just now and probably guaranteed themselves a spot in the playoffs.   The Tigers won despite giving up a run in the bottom of the 9th (shocker,  I know).  And the Wings are up 2-0 on the Flyers in the 2nd with Howard in goal and the Wings also tallying a short-handed goal.   A win in that game is practically a lock on the playoffs as well.

Not a bad night so far, hope the Wings hold on for the 'W'.

Let's Go, Red Wings.

I know the question is in jest, but it would be actually kind of fun to watch someone break the season record, which I think is about 6 or 7 home runs. I think it was Dave Hansen in one of his stints with the Dodgers. Part of me wants to say the career record belongs to Matt Stairs - I could be wrong there.

Your post made me curious so I googled it, you're correct about Hansen

but Gates specialized in coming up with RISP and driving them in. Lots and lots of clutch pinch singles and doubles, what made him so good was that he understood the importance of shortening up his swing instead of swinging for the fences in the pinch-hitting role. In my mind, the GOAT pinch hitter.

here's a funny Gator story i was looking for:

On August 7, 1968, Brown wasn't in the starting lineup, so he decided to grab two hot dogs from the clubhouse. He was ordered by manager Mayo Smith to pinch hit. He stuffed the hot dogs in his jersey to hide them from his manager.

"I always wanted to get a hit every time I went to the plate. But this was one time I didn't want to get a hit. I'll be damned if I didn't smack one in the gap and I had to slide into second—head first, no less. I was safe with a double. But when I stood up, I had mustard and ketchup and smashed hot dogs and buns all over me.

"The fielders took one look at me, turned their backs and damned near busted a gut laughing at me. My teammates in the dugout went crazy." After fining Brown $100, Smith said, "What the hell were you doing eating on the bench in the first place?" Brown: "I decided to tell him the truth. I said, 'I was hungry. Besides, where else can you eat a hot dog and have the best seat in the house'"[5]

RIP, Gator (he passed away back in 2013).

Yeah, too much.  The Tigers have a great track record of bringing in pitchers that succeeded elsewhere and then for no reason at all, sucked in Detroit.  The Browns have a great track record of bringing in quarterbacks that everyone knows are shitty, then when they finally get someone serviceable, jettisoning him immediately.

The Wings don't "almost" lock up anything with a win. They lose their last two...Boston wins their last two (both very possible with the schedule) and the Wings are watching. Flyers still have a game in hand and play the Maple Leafs. The key is the Boston game.

Wings could have lost 2 of 3 but beat Boston in regulation...and they go. Tonight is a nice to have...but unfortunately may not really do much without at least a point in the last two.

I would love to see them beat the Bruins and put it to bed. However, playing Boston in a back to back scenario on the road when we both want the same thing isn't encouraging. Then the Bruins gets a mediocre game to finish while we play the Rangers at MSG.

Three things in our favor...the Wings showed "want to" tonight. Second, the Rangers may be sitting guys this weekend. Third, the Bruins have been playing like ass.

I simply don't like the schedule. Just think...if the Wings don't shit the bed recently against Cbus and Toronto this is a moot discussion.

I hardly follow wings or pistons at all anymore but am enjoying this week.

I think neither are locks, even if the wings win tonight. It would help, but that boston game tomorrow is *almost* everything.  If Wings lose that all bets are off.

Pistons remaining schedule is tough. Losing out is conceivable. I would HAAAAAAAAAAAAATE to lose out and see the Bulls win out to get in.

Victor hitting dingers from left and right ito start year is an awfully good omen. we need him  to be that switch hitter he had been before last year.

If the Wings win tonight, drop tomorrow night's game in Boston in regulation and Philly beats the Leafs tomorrow night, I believe we are still on the outside of the playoffs.  The Flyers still have a game in hand on us.

I'm still hoping the Pistons can get past the Pacers into the 7 seed.  I'd rather not face LeBron in the first round.

was the lack of bad giveaways by Kronwall and Ericsson. I don't understand why Blashill kept AA glued to the bench, but a win is a win. Though I suspect it will come down to the Rangers game.

I've been wondering this for the last few games.  I saw some crazy stat where he was a league leader in drawn penalties.  Even if he's not polished yet on the offensive end, we can use his speed and ability to draw penalties to get us on the power play more.  If he becomes "Darren Helm, but with scoring touch" Blashill will have to play him more.

Just my opinion, but I don't think he bares much of a resemblance to Helm. Yes he's fast but does it very fluidly. Helm is obviously busting his ass to get up to his top speed while AA just flies without looking like he's trying. Helm also seems to be grittier and likes to battle and keep moving his feet in the corners - a more refined and skilled Glendening in my eyes. AA skates more like Larkin to me and also sorta reminds me of Fedorov (obviously a stretch, those are some big skates to fill).
