Red Berenson To Return
Red will be behind the bench again in 2016-17. [Patrick Barron]
At the hockey posteason banquet, Red Berenson announced that he'll return next season. From Michigan Daily hockey beat writer Justin Meyer:
Breaking: Red Betenson will return to Michigan next season

Confirmed at end of year awards. "I had a conversation with Warde Manuel and I'm here today to say this will not be my last hockey banquet"

We are in the studio recording this week's podcast. More to come this week.
Red isn't where he used to be but if he left we could certainly hire someone new and have them be worse than 'fading Red Berenson' next year so I'm ok with this. Hopefully he can keep a chunk of the CCM line around (or all of it if I'm really dreaming) and see where he gets in his last shot at it all

Red Berenson is fucking awesome. And he still is.
The man scored 6 goals in one 8-0 hockey game. Record still stands.
And the UM hockey players love the man. For good reason.
That's all you need to know.
The end.

How will we have better goaltending next season? I've heard this repeated in a couple of places and it's just false. Racine is graduating, Nagelvoort hasn't shown anything to make people believe that he'll be consistently good, and our incoming freshman tender is from the NAHL. He was productive there, but it's not even high US juniors. He'll need plenty of time to adjust to the compeititon level. Racine would start next year if he were coming back, our goaltending is going to be a weakness again.
The tournament is not a "crapshoot"--Red won only two titles, played for only one more, and was bounced in the final four many times.
His teams were exciting, monumentally so, but he should have been able to win at least 3 more NC's with what he brings in. The team was uber-talented for 20 years, more than any other program, yet lacked the IT factor
The season that really captures that was the famous 38-2 (or so) season. I believe it was sometime around '92-95 (the Steve Shields teams)--they lost to LSSU in the conference final--and I thought RUH ROH.
Yep. Doinked in the NCAA's without eaven getting to the Frozen Four. I know everyone wants to yell, "HEY IT'S MICHIGAN THE REFS CALLED 42,000 PENALTIES AGAINST US AND SHOT THREE OF OUR PLAYERS IN THE BACK WITH MACHINE GUNS!!!"
But, good teams don't whine about refs, and Red, while bringing UM back from the dead, fielded teams that were easily pushed around as the pyramid of playoff hockey got smaller at the top.
He do need to go.

He wouldn't have been much help to us back in 2008
Yay! I guess? I hope next season will be a good send-off for Red.
I do hope Warde is developing a succession plan.

red gets to decide when to leave. period. full stop. he's earned it.
I'm okay with this. Actually, selfishly I'm really happy. He's a legend and I'm not ready for someone else to take the reigns. Let's hope he can go out on top next year.
