Michigan Football needs a new weight room

Submitted by mgofro on

Brian mentioned this in the mailbag...

As for maximizing Michigan's resources, I literally cannot imagine what else Harbaugh could be doing to increase Michigan's recruiting profile and on-field fortunes.

How about getting a new weight room that can compete with the big boys.

Our current weight room looks like an 80s basement compared to Alabama and Oregon.

First attempt - successful!

2nd and 3rd also successful, but only occurred as a result of a bad gateway that turned out not to be as bad as advertised!

Anyway, I heard that Harbaugh likes his steak tenderized, and isn't shy about 2nd and 3rd portions.

Not that aesthetics don't matter, but it looks like the primary differences across schools are just aesthetic. I mean, it's not so hard to stock enough squat racks and powerlifting platforms. After that, everything else is pretty much auxiliary.

(In other words, the functional difference between a state-of-the-art facility and a serious meathead's garage is not as great as I think a lot of people imagine.)

gotten any new exercise equipment/space etc?  I was there in the late 90s and the student weight rooms were pathetic.   I hope some of the school money actually goes back to students.

I guess they could spend the money on a new weight room, but I sort of doubt UM is losing commits because of the workout facilities.  I'd rather they keep invading SEC strongholds and giving conniptions to fine Southern gentlemen who I de declare, just want to think of the children.

..... Pretty sure Harbaugh wants the weight room rigid, I even think he took a lot of the gay ass decor RR used as "updates". Look a weight room should resemble it's team and Harbaugh wants a tough, rugged badass team not some ussypa shit like Oregon sports, he'll it represents their team it looks sleek and well sissified to me... I effin love the old school hardcore underground feel of the UofM weight room it actually screams testosterone (the legal self created kind).. It says men lift here this is a damn football locker room not a damn Planet Fitness you cannot get a pedicure here hell you might lose a digit on our rugged ass squat rack, but if you do you damn sure will feel like a man doing it!! Put some Pantera or some Slip Knot mix it up with some hardcore street rap and forget that Pop shit that's bound to be playing over in those girly ass freshly painted do not use chalk and always clean every piece of equipment after use pansie ass "gyms"... We at Michigan know it's all about attitude and it starts with a tough ass kick you in your nuts weight room, pussies need not apply!! Go Blue!!

So I fully acknowledge that appearances matter, and I'm fine with catering to them. But "old school out-dated" doesn't make much sense when you're talking about the actual equipment. If guys are pressing, squatting, deadlifting, and cleaning a lot of weight, I'm not sure how much else you need in terms of strength facilities. Granted, you might want to do some boutique stuff for rehab/pre-hab and to address specific weaknesses, but even that is generally best accomplished through free weights/kettle bells. The marginal benefit of whatever hi-tech machine is going to be really small relative to the benefit of a loaded bar.

Thanks for the laugh tough guy. That was good stuff.

Unfortunately 18 year old recruits today don't feel the way you do. They want sleek, they want modern, they want gorgeous.
They don't want to lift in an old, outdated, basement weight room. It's a facilities race in major college athletics. For years Michigan lagged behind in that department due to old, crusty beliefs. They must keep up. A brand new weight room is long over due.
