OT: Favorite Podcasts

Submitted by Maize and Luke on

Hey all.  Sorry if this topic has come up before but I don't remember seeing anything.  Recently I've become a podcast junky and can't get enough.  I'm always looking for the next "must listen to" podcast.  So my question to you is, what are your favorites?  Here are a couple of mine....

1. Sword and Scale:  If you like true crime this is the best I've come across.  Be warned though it is VERY graphic, some real sick stuff. (most are about 1hr long)

2. Lore:  As you may have guessed it's all about folk lore.  Some true through i.e. HH Holmes a UM alum. (on average about 20-30 minutes long)

3.  Criminal: More true crime but at different angle.  Different topics from different view points.  (on average about 20-30 minutes long)

4.  The Unresolved Podcast:  Based on unsolved mysteries.  A fairly new podcast.  Topics range from psychotic killers to folk lore. (wide range, 40-60 minutes long)

5. Serial:  If you podcast you've most surely heard of this one.  True crime into it's second season.  I recommend binge listening to this one.  A lot of in-depth info, too much to wait 2 weeks between episodes.

6. Radiolab: A WIDE range of topics.  They have a huge library of episodes, you'll surely find something that interests you.  Great research done by this team.

Those are my favorites.  What's yours??  I need more!  Must have more!

Other than MGo the only sports podcast I listen to is Cavs: The Blog: The Podcast.

Non-sports favorites:

  • Partially Examined Life: grad school dropouts read primary texts (mostly) in the history of philosophy and discuss them. Pretty funny, good insights.
  • Very Bad Wizards: a philosopher & a psychologist talk moral psychology & ethics. And, sort of weirdly, movies. Hilarious. Not for those easily offended by jokes about having sex with dogs.
  • History of Philosophy without any Gaps: Lecture style, fairly short episodes (20-25 minutes). Dude takes the title seriously--247 episodes in and only up to Aquinas.

If you are a Walking Dead fan I HIGHLY suggest listening to We're Alive. The storyline and production is incredible. It's an audio drama not a podcast (think of listening to a movie without watching so sounds effects voice actors etc but with a bit more narration). There are 3 seasons and all the episode are about an hour long. I listened to them on the way to work every day this summer and had the Netflix binge end of a series sadness after it concluded.

Finally something relevant to me! I have a 45 minute driving commute each way since last August, and I've listened to about 100 hours of podcasts (sometimes music so that's not even all the time... wow). I only started because I downloaded an app to listen to the MGoPodcast, so thanks guys! This is the priority order in which I will listen to things when I see there's a new episode:

1a. MGoPodcast (even if I'm in the middle of something else)

1b. MGoBlog Roundtable (WTKA)

2. Serial

3. WTF with Marc Maron (if it's an interesting enough guest, or even if not sometimes because Marc is so awesome).

4. Stuff You Should Know (now the jingle is in my head)

5. This American Life (might be higher since only 1 is out at a time on my app)

6. Freakonomics Radio

7. Across the Board (the only chess podcast I could find---host interviews someone over a game of chess; much more about the interview than the game because they don't dictate the moves unfortunately)

8. U Talkin' U2 To Me? --- Podcast featuring Adam Scott about U2. Heard an excerpt on This American Life a couple weeks back and laughed my ass off, so I subscribed.

9. Always looking for more so this post is A+

Freakonomics, mgopodcast, Radio Lab, This American Life, Serial, Bill Simmons Podcast are all really good, but everyone has mentioned them. A few from Gimlet Media that haven't been mentioned:
  • Reply All (formerly TLDR). Loosely technology based, but they even do stories on LSD trips and other fascinating topics. The shows are always interesting and compelling. Highly recommended, especially if you are a TAL fan.
  • Startup Podcast.  If you are into business or entrepreneurship, this gives a great look into starting a company. Essentially a real-world drama. Give it a listen (start with Season 1).
  • Mystery Show. If you can get past Starlee Kine's voice, Season 1 is really good. Listen to the Britney Spears episode (no seriously). Great way to kill 45 minutes.

I've always thought, especially in the football off-season when things are slow, that it would be entertaining to have Brian and Ace/Seth do a segment of the podcast dedicated to the "Best of the MGoBlog Discussion Boards".  Discuss their takes on some of the funnier or more contentious threads and pick a "thread of the week" or something along those lines, kind of an "Unverified Voracity" but emphasis on the threads themselves. Or have a "get to know an MGoBlog commenter" segment where they invite a frequent commenter like Magnus, Space Coyote, or Carlos Spicyweiner to call in for a few minutes.

Or maybe a couple of us should just do an "MGoBlog Meta" Podcast ourselves. Hmmmmm???

One that has not been mentioned yet... Guys We Fucked A couple of comediennes interview various guys they had relationships with. Extremely enlightening sex talk. If I had this during my teenage years, I think I would have had much better understanding of sex and relationships.

My favorite podcast is Layne Norton's.  He runs them probably once per month from his website at www.biolayne.com.  Layne's specaility is bodybuilding nutrition as he did his PhD on protein metabolism, but also competed in both bodybuilding and powerlifting, but he has all sorts of exercise science guests, typically the type that are exercise science professors, but also active athletes and/or lifters.

Bret Contreras also used to have a good one, but I haven't heard any new episodes lately as I think he got busy with his PhD work.  It's called "strengthofevidence".  It's also likely to have PhD types, but is more aligned with either weight training or kineseology or dissecting exercise science research and it's practical implications.

Joe Defranco is a strength coach that has a pretty good one.  Mark Rippetoe has one called "startingstrength".  "The Strength Coach Podast" is more related to strength and conditioning.

I am surprised not to see the "Eye on College Basketball" podcast. I really like Gary Parrish and they do a great job of giving the big picture view of college hoops. Norlander and Veccine are ok, but Parrish drives the show and is a really good listen.

I listen to "The Audible" for big picture college football. Stewart Mandel and Bruce Feldman are solid and they get pretty good guests.

More generally, "This American Life" is the all time classic. Calamari anyone?

Crazy Love with Frances Chan (for any followers of Jesus who love inspiring authentic lessons).

The Art of Manliness (nuff said)

The Herd (I know a lot of you hate him but he's by far the most interesting sports radio personality)

Bill Burr's podcast is spectacular. The fighter and the kid, your mom's house podcast, joe rogan experience and the church of what's happening now (joey diaz) are all great as well. Throw in 'the mic and the spic podcast' and you're golden pony boy.
