Seems odd. Like Lane Kiffin getting another coaching job. Again, I know a few South Carolina fans who think school is top tier because of the SEC bullshit. Actually this seems like a great hire to help South Carolina fade back to where they belong.

DId Auburn even have that good of a defense this year?  I feel like typically when coaches are fired and have to go back to being coordinators, they need to really do something special before they get offered another HC job.

It seemed like the two big cues here were first that Muschamp was said to be not returning to Auburn, and then that Rich Rodriguez turned down the South Carolina job after mulling it over on the plane home, per reports. Well, to be more accurate, those were the two big cues that Muschamp was looking and that South Carolina was probably going to make an underwhelming hire. For their purposes, this is a pretty underwhelming hire.

This goes down as one of the worst offseason hires. He was terrible at Florida, crazy at auburn and now will set South Carolina football back 20 years.

I do have a question, how many of the coaching hires this offseason have been influenced by harbaughs return to Michigan? By that I mean to say, do you feel teams are making conscious efforts to hire certain people in order to get that "splash" hire and thus ignite a fan base? I feel that when Harbaugh came to Michigan it set a new standard on a good coaching hire and now other teams are looking to do that. Just my opinion, but I'm wondering if others view it that way.

Muschamp is not that splash hire in my opinion, but South Carolina isn't even close to Michigan in terms of tradition.

This is hilarious. What accomplishment at Florida would justify this? Hire Gene Chizik. He at least cheats with big money and won a national championship.

My understanding is that the biggest threat to land Rashan Gary other than us was Auburn. To the recruitniks out there: does the fact that Auburns DC is now bolting to South Carolina help us a bit more? Or is this pretty much a wash with the Durkin departure? Think of the Gary household this week. Both DCs for the schools they were looking at have been hired away in the past 5 days....

Gary likes UM in a way that should translate regardless of coordinator. Harbaugh seems like a good enough salesmen you aren't going to lose him because a staff guy leaves. Also, it sounds like his Mom is on board with UM, which tends to preclude just a personal relationship.

He has been a high-level recruit for a couple of years now.  If he and his family have been paying attention, and you know they have, they have seen a ton of coaching changes in that time.

They know it's a fools game to try to pin everything on a specific coordinator or an assistant.  They like Michigan and they like Harbaugh.  That's where their stability lies.

Taking my Michigan homer hat off, I still don't think Auburn is a very stable situation.  If you are looking for stability that is reasonable to expect, Michigan is far ahead of Auburn.

Sounds like Harbaugh forewarned Gary and his mother of Durkin leaving before an official announcement. On the other hand per the article I read his mother called Muschamp a flat out liar because he had assured them that he would be there for a few years. Should help us against Auburn
