Michigan 28, Penn State 16 Comment Count

The difference. [Eric Upchurch/MGoBlog]

There were shades of the dark, recent past. A non-existent running game. An ugly interception. Catching seemingly all the bad breaks.

One particularly bad aspect of that past was missing, however. While James Franklin cost Penn State a chance to win by kicking a field goal from the one and mismanaging their timeouts, Jim Harbaugh stood opposite him, competent and then some.

Michigan won this game due to coaching and finishing drives, and the two were inextricably linked. Both teams had one touchdown from outside the red zone, Michigan's a 26-yard pass from Jake Rudock to Jake Butt before PSU responded with a 25-yard fade to Saeed Blacknail. The Wolverines converted all three* of their red zone chances into touchdowns. Penn State also had three, but ultimately settled for three field goals, stymied by a stout Wolverine defense and their own conservative playcalling.

James Ross laid some licks. He wasn't alone. [Upchurch]

While the game remained close throughout, Michigan controlled most of the action, outgaining PSU 343-207. Outside of a bad pick, Jake Rudock continued his pinpoint ways of the last couple games, throwing for 256 yards and a pair of scores on 36 attempts. Amara Darboh moved the chains and earned a hard-fought touchdown on a steady diet of wide receiver screens and added a remarkable sideline snag; Butt found open spaces for 66 yards; Chesson stretched the field and chipped in M's best run of the day on a 20-yard end-around. While it was a frustrating day on the ground, the weapons in the passing game again proved their steadily increasing worth.

On the other side, Michigan allowed an early 56-yard run to standout freshman back Saquon Barkley and otherwise limited him to 12 yards on 14 carries. The defensive front beat up quarterback Christian Hackenberg, who managed just 131 yards on 37 attempts and took four sacks among many, many hits. By PSU's last-gasp drive, Hackenberg seemed out of it—quite possibly injured—and even started trotting off the field before barely getting the play off on fourth down; his final throw sailed harmlessly out of bounds.

If you're looking for the moment that turned around the game, the muffed punt that Chesson recovered inside the ten, setting up a one-yard Sione Houma plunge for a 21-10 lead, is the simplest answer. But if you'd like to say it's the moment Michigan hired Harbaugh, whose timely aggressiveness got the Wolverines a critical score late in the first half for the second straight game, it'd be hard to argue.

Ultimately, that's why this game will be fondly remembered—if quickly lost in the excitement of the week to come—instead of another nightmare in Happy Valley. Be gone, ever-fuzzier recollections of McGloin and Floyd and 27-for-27 and missed overtime field goals. Michigan is one Ohio State victory away from playing for the Big Ten East.

*Not including the game's final drive, when Michigan kneeled out the clock while inside the PSU five.

I hear you. I was holding my breath on every play, waiting for the little yellow box to pop up. Funny thing is, is when the replay came on, the announcers were always quiet or didn't know why a flag was thrown(block below the waist after hitting a guy's shoulder, pass interference for hand fighting and a guy tripping over his own two feet, hands to the face). To persevere on the road through that shit is most impressive. Hackenberg was beat down!

Solid win. And Ohio loses and screws everything up for Michigan for a possible B1G championship. I don't see Sparty losing to Penn St, but I can hope. I think we beat Ohio, especially after Coach Meyer benches Elliot for his post game stupidity. Go Blue!

It's nice to see a coach freak out like Harbaugh did.  I'd have to go back and watch it on DVR, but I'm pretty sure after at least two of those huge freakouts the defense recorded a sack or negative yardage play.  They really seemed to be feeding off of his energy.  So much better than blank stares and golf claps.

OSU's tears of unfathomable sadness taste delicious, but they will bring their A game next week.  Michigan has a legitimate shot, but I'd sure feel better with Glasgow out there plugging run holes.

Even though they shit the bed, they do look much more vulnerable playing a real opponent, and without Cook, MSU is still vulnerable playing their boogieman the Nittany Lions.   Even though we beat them PSU can take down Sparty. Gotta hope man. I want that OSU win bad anyways for a Rose Bowl shot or other NY6 game and revenge for the past 7 years.  We will be even better under Harbaugh next year but with a green QB and playing in Columbus.

Anyone have a stat for this season on how many minutes UM has trailed in games? I can't recall them trailing much since Utah. Obviously the play that we won't mention, and a few late game lead changes. Seems UM is in front at the half in most games and not trailed much.

While we needed those idiots to win....gotta like the chaos in Ohio from this loss. Ezekiel Elliot went off on Urban for not giving him the ball more and basically declared for the draft. Cardale said he's leaving, and all this happens on a weekend osu has important recruits on campus.

So......osu lost, their heisman candidate torched the coaching, their Qb nxt yr said he's out, AND Michigan took care of business on the road.

Who's got it better than us?

First of all, let me just say that I am lovin' me some Michigan Wolverines.  4 wins on the road in the Big Ten?  Priceless.  If we had won every road game 2-0, I would still be turning cartwheels.  No backflips, but cartwheels every day.

Under normal circumstances I would come on here and talk about how I'm disgusted with the pre-snap penalties on both sides of the ball.  And I would probably say here we go again with the turnovers.  And I might even mention my hostility towards the referees regarding all these "reversed" targeting penalties.  Heck, I might even ask why we're still getting our punts blocked 11 games into the season.

But not today.  No complaints about my Wolverines today baby.  I live in Columbus and today is a good day to be a Michigan fan in Columbus.  The Michigan win drove me to the edge, but the Buckeye loss (at home) pushed me across the boundary into this State of Euphoria.  Don't get me wrong, I still hate Michigan State.  But do you know how hard it is for a team to come into the horse shoe and walk out with a victory?  Wow.

Here's what I know from past experience.  The gym will be a little emptier today because the few Buckeye fans who do work out, are devastated.  Also, lots of Buckeye fans will take the day off from work on Monday (Loser's Holiday), and maybe even the rest of the week.

Here's to hoping my Wolverines can get me back to the State of Euphoria next Saturday.  It doesn't get any better than this.

Let's Go Blue!!!!!
