Before the season, a look at our schedule made many feel like it was soft. Colorado, Wisconsin, Penn St., and even Maryland are all teams and wins that seem so much better than expected. Wisconsin the least of that group, but still, I was worried about Sparty (I live in Illinois- so doubly fun today) and Iowa, and obviously Ohio St. As impressed as I am with how varied and scheme heavy our offense is, I am just flabbergasted by Don Brown's defense. In its first year! (Has anyone seen BC's defense this year? From awesome to terrible in one year)
If Rutgers wanted to be treated with kid gloves, they shouldn't have picked the fight. Even though they did, Michigan was easy on them. It could have been triple digits.
With this and the Alabama assistant being investigated, it is going to be interesting to see the fallout in recruiting with possible ncaa sanctions on the horizon.
I wonder if Morris at WR is something they have been doing in regular practices or if it was merely for the spring game (considering the injuries and pending arrivals, the group was small. They used RBs at WR too.)
Someone suggested his father should follow to coach at Michigan. I think we would be better off if he remained in Florida and helped cement the pipeline to Michigan.
I thought I read somewhere that Bush became familiar with the Michigan coaches because of the summer swarm tour. Was that the case? If so, it seems that giving players (and local high school coaches) access and exposure to our coaches is paying dividends already.
Rudock doesn't call the plays. If your tool is a qb who doesn't have a cannon for an arm or maybe is a little inaccurate or maybe doesn't see the whole field, how do you make sure you're opponent can't do x, y or z to always stop them? You make them know the qb with the small arm can throw downfield, or the less accurate guy can hit a bunch of easy passes in a row, or the guy who stares his receivers down has some look left, look right, open pass in the middle...
Yes, but his bread and butter isn't 30-40 yard passes. That's just a wrinkle you can't forget he can do or you pay for it. I didn't compare rudock to Brady I compared harbaugh to belicheck, but you missed it
If we can improve from week to week and schematically adjust to our opponents I am optimistic. If we have reached our potential due to skill, not so much. But, I have seen steady improvement and coaching is solid, so we should be ok. I'm less worried about rudock than some here, as even the missed passes give opposing teams something to worry about. Tom Brady has proven you can nickel and dime your way to huge wins. It's the threat I like, more than the consternation about the misses.
Top 25 in the AP. Team is starting to get some respect which is a nice change. I loved Rich Rods offense, but hated giving up 50 points per game. I loved Hoke's attitude and recruiting but wondered why we played down to teams and why our future stars seemingly never improved. I'm very hopeful we have a good blend of aggressive and fundamental. I'm a Michigan fan so I am forever optimistic.
I know it was a loss, but there felt like there was a different level of skill. There were mistakes but they didn't look like the kinds of mistakes where a qb tries to throw an inadvisable pass while being dragged to the ground. There were fewer face palm moments by a lot. Correct number of players, understanding of plays and intensity were all positives. There were things to fix but they seem like fixable things. The O line still has a lot of work to do, along with the RBs, but that can also be fixed.
I believe harbaugh might pressure the kid to sign the papers and retire from football. What I don't believe is that harbaugh would say it was for a scholarship position. That would be tacky. My guess is he sees all the signings and made an assumption. I hope his health is ok, and if he chooses to keep playing he doesn't regret it later. No matter what, he's a wolverine and I wish him the best.
Hi, first post (I think). The thing that struck me about this kid was he seemed to have a good eye for where a play was going. He went from back peddle to charge run plays, and did so while avoiding blockers. On pass plays he seemed to react fast enough to make a difference. That seems like the two skills a ss needs to have. Well, that plus no fear of dropping the hammer on a tackle.
Hurst looked like he was exploding through the line of scrimmage against HS talent, but he will need to do more against top tier offensive linemen. I was impressed with his ability to shed blocks and make tackles when the play came to him. He also seemed to maintain awareness of where the plays were going even when blocked away from the action. He looks like a good fit for Mattison's schemes.
