Do you shut down after a loss?
November 19th, 2015 at 7:02 PM ^
Same here. I really hope we win because it's fun watching the rest of the games with rooting interest. It was great back in 2006 watching UCLA beat USC and then cheering for Arkansas in the SEC title game. That game still pisses me off. Hogs had a 21-17 lead in the 3rd quarter and they blew it after allowing Florida to convert a fake punt from their own 10.

I realized I had a problem when I was basically Bolivia'd by my family after we lost to MSU during the RichRod era (I felt like Rodriguez had given up - can't remember the year). I was so angry I threw a tantrum, went to bed, not to arise for hours until the middle of the night. I then started drinking again until about six in the morning - not my best behavior.
Now, like when we lost to MSU this year, I am angry and sad, but I get over it by Sunday morning because I have so much more to do (like we all do). Ashamedly, wins are still taken for granted and not enjoyed as much as the losses hurt, but what can I do. I have issues still, clearly.

Risk is a horrible, horrible game. I'm a sadomasochist who plays Chess for fun and I find Risk too horrible for anyone with a soul.

my wife hates me when we lose. I don't blame her.

It's been a rough month.

I would never treat my kids differently but I'm definitely not the same "happy" dad after Michigan loses. Sometimes I am a bit snippy to my wife because she always tells me it's just a game. Then I get more pissed myself and her because I realize that I am 36 and get angry when Michigan loses.
Sometimes I wonder what my life would be like if I didn't like sports.
Ok I'm done. GO BLUE. Beat Penn St

I feel like turning into the Hulk and going on a rampage or catching the world on fire, but I control myself and just drink and stare off in space!

I woke up on Sunday with a giant bruise on my hand. I don't even know how it got there, but I know why it got there.

A few minutes after MSU this year (watched the game alone and didn't eat/drink), I went to the track at my local HS and ran a few miles. It was dark, but I didn't care.

I did that in '83 after we lost to Illinois and our shot at the Rose Bowl. I hopped on my bike and rode furiously all around campus until my anger wore off.
I never realized how big the campus was until then. I was surprised that there was another entire campus area up by the Medical center. Who knew?

When I'm angry after a game I don't shut down. I become more involved/want more info to analyze. PSU 2013, ND 2014, both of the last two Nebraska games and the 2013-2014 MSU games fall into this category for me.
The games I shut down after are the heartbreakers. MSU 2015 and OSU 2013 made me shut down for a while. I'm so thankful we had a bye week after MSU this year because idk if I could've watched next week. I wasn't mad, just demoralized with bouts of frustration.
I had a 7AM flight the day after the MSU game (and I was at the Big House) and I felt ill all day Sunday. By Monday I was mostly over it, but I needed time off of football.

If I am watching on the TV the impact of a loss somehow seems less painful than when I'm at the Stadium and we lose a big game like the MSU game. That game bothered me for weeks. I find my emotional investment is much higher when I see a game live.
November 19th, 2015 at 6:55 PM ^
Yep. The following week is pointless to me as I'm in a zombie-like state where I'm very tired and just want to sleep. A win the next game is the only way I break out of it.

Not too much. The MSU loss took me about 30 minutes to mentally reboot and it took a very deliberate effort. Otherwise, I try to keep things in perspective:
I choose to invest in Michigan football because it is fun and I do my best to ride the highs and accept the lows (and quickly move on).
I'm guessing I'm in the minority.

When we lose, I don't watch another game all weekend generally. MBB is the exception.
I mean, it's not like life shuts down or anything. I'm just in a generally pissy mood, or some variation of general bitterness for a day or two. The Sparty loss still burns though, and I suspect that one always will.

I used to be a borderline wreck after losses, but once our "Long Walk In The Woods" began in earnest in 2007 (some might agrue it truly began with the death of Bo), I learned to put losses in a broader context. Yeah, they are saddening, and I drink - sometimes more than I should after them - but I've learned to be stoic about them. Catharsis helps - "The State Of Our Open Threads", for example, is actually easier to write after losses because it is me venting, and I feel better and able to face my Sunday after that.
Also, I would rather my kids see the me that realizes "yeah, it sucks, but you have to pick yourself up and go at it that much harder next week"

NO RELIGION! I know, I know, but after particularly tough losses I'll go to Church. It's a good reminder that there are more important things in this world. Sometimes that helps.

I thought they started locking the gates to the stadium on non-game days a few years ago.

Can I just say that this is some great therapy? In a funny way, knowing that I am not alone in feeling this way after Michigan loses is reassuring.
I will say that, on the flip side, the emotional high of a Michigan win is glorious. I get an extra bounce in my step, food tastes better, I look more handsome, etc. Plus, I find that social media becomes really fun following a win - looking through all the Michigan mentions when we win a big/close/exciting game and waiting for highlights during other games is addictive.
Again...great thread OP.

No, I don't shut down. I don't like a loss. But it is reminder there are more important things in life than a college football team.
The one thing I do shut down after a loss is mgoblog. As currently configured, the blog can't handle the traffic. And I can't handle the content. I roll my eyes and smh at the recriminations, the weeping and gnashing of teeth, the world ending, the rending of garments, the pulling out of hair, the self and team flagellation, the tears of unfathomable sadness, the drowning of misery with various alcoholic concoctions. You will notice that typically the proprieters avoid new content after a loss as well, other than the obligatory Henri the Otter, etc. Partly out of sadness, I'm sure, partly out of avoiding idiocy.

Yes, this is one of the things that actually helps me get through a loss. I get to commiserate with others who are in the exact same position and discuss "what happened?" until we've analyzed it to death and the numbness wears off.
It also helps when I see people that are taking it even worse that me. Gives me some perspective.
I remember the days before the internet. If you were not at the game or at a bar with a bunch of Michigan fans, you were left all alone to absorb the loss with no way at all to break out of the funk. I lived alone, and it made for some hard Sundays. I would look forward to Mondays just to have someone to talk to at work and change the subject that was completely occupying my idle brain.

So if it's not a noon game I'm normally done with CFB for the day. However I will watch pretty much any other sport outside of CFB.

My amount of caring about our wins and losses is beyond rational explanation and it hasn't changed my entire life. I start getting nervous about our games around Tuesday. By Friday I struggle to concentrate at work and I'm a dick at home. If we win the game I'm like a 17 year old who got laid at prom. If we lose then I'm an ass hole to everyone for about 72 hours. I wish it wasn't this way but it is and it always will be.
