Choose your own adventure, UM football

Submitted by buddhafrog on

I have enjoyed reading the "So you're saying there's a chance?!" articles about Michigan making the playoffs after MSU crapped the bed last Saturday. We have a chance, yo!

But I catch myself and realize I don't care that much. I just want us to beat OSU and win the B1G and go to the Rose Bowl - the same dream I had for UM in my childhood days. That would be so beautiful.

But I am curious where you stand. Choose one:

  1. 90% UM wins the B1G and goes to the Rose Bowl / 10% loses to OSU
  2. 50% UM wins the B1G and goes to the playoffs and see / 50% loses to OSU
  3. 25% UM wins everything and is playoff Champion / 75% loses to OSU

I'm taking choice #1 all day. Practicality tells me that 25% chance at something so prized should be grabbed, but I just don't care. Give me OSU and Big Ten Champs. That's my dream.

ALSO:
For people who are no fun at parties, I will be the first to say, "Just win at Indiana, geez."

Yeah I'd love to win the Big ten and a rose bowl, but we need to aspire for championships. While Bama is pulling away from us on titles and Ohio State is catching up we need to start hoping for title games. No reason we can't win titles now.

It feels like stealing to get a one-in-four chance to win it all right now, with 6 wins and a lot of uncontrollable chaos needed to get there. Especially since the list of wins would not only include PSU, OSU, and Iowa, but also two very very good teams like Alabama and Clemson. Even in a hypothetical year where Michigan is 9-0 right now, getting 25% odds to win it all would be astronomically high at this juncture.

The only way I'd trade that with option 1 is if you gave me 90% odds to win the Rose Bowl.

And option 3 >>> option 2 because if you assign coinflip odds of winning the two playoff games once you get there, that essential 25% chance of winning it all times the 50% chance you're giving me in option 2 is equal to 12.5% odds, and in option 3 you are giving me DOUBLE that chance to win it all right now.

I like your question and would choose Option 1.

Sure, I'd like many, many national championships and playoff appearances.  But if you can give me a 90% chance right now that after 1 year of Harbaugh we walk out of 2015 with a win over OSU, MSU officially behind us in the standings, a trip to Indy, an end to the 11 year B1G Championship drought, and a high profile matchup in a "New Years 6" Bowl with another top-10 team?  I'm taking that.

And then let the Harbaugh-hype train go absolutely grape nuts for 2016.

The alternative in Option 3 is a chance at all that and a bag of chips, but a more-likely-than-not 75% chance that M loses to OSU, no B1G title, and some run-of-the-mill Outback matchup against SEC #7 while MSU and OSU are playing big games in bright lights on the big stage?

No thanks.  I'm done with all of that.  I've seen it too often the past decade.  And it's not about them.  It's about Michigan no longer playing 2nd (or 3rd/4th/5th) fiddle in the Big Ten.

I'll take 1 all day long.

Guys, I hope you all appreciate what I just did. I just bought a ticket that takes off at 4:35 pm ET on December 31st and lands at 5 am ET on the 1st. I just guaranteed Michigan is going to be in the playoffs since I won't be able to watch.

so  I don't comprehend.  There are still solid odds we don't make it to OSU undefeated, so talking about this is nice, but just feel good conjecture right now.  Would be more interested in how we are going to beat Indiana this weekend.

But that's just me...the pragmatist as always.

This thought that Michigan is going to play a football game on Saturday in Bloomington is just feel good conjecture at this point.  I'm more interested in how we're going to safely board the team bus.  Call me pragmatic.

reinforce the resurgence of the program and winning as a tradition vs rivals. Show tOSU they're not unbeatable. Convince more recruits.

Basically checked out after the Staee game. That was the only game I cared about. I would be happy with 6-6 or 7-5 as long as one of the wins was over Staee. Finishing 9-3 with losses to both rivals is a failure.

I'll go with winning out and going to the Rose Bowl. Although, you didn't have that game listed as a win. 5 more wins? (Indiana, PSU, OSU, Big10, and Rose Bowl). Yes, I'd take that in a heartbeat.

I'm inclined to take #3 because, you know, go big or go home, right? But I'd be as equally satisfied with beating those scumbags from Columbus.

I don't even need the Rose Bowl. Just beat OSU. Everything else is secondary. Seriously, we've been down in this series for WAY too long. Recruits were essentially 5-6 years old the last time this rivalry was truly a back and forth series. Michigan needs this game more than any other one. It needs a program-defining, statement win. Beating Urban Meyer and the defending national champions will provide just that.
