Delonte Hollowell - Looking for Support for Graduate School [LOCKED]

Submitted by NeilGoBlue on

Hello,

Delonte Hollowell (DB 2011-2014) is looking for support for graduate school.  He started a gofundme page.

Whatever the MGOBLOG community can do to support a former player would be great. His info is on the page itself.

(I'm just an alumni that he reached out to).

http://www.gofundme.com/dhollo24

I pointed him to this thread, so he might be able to answer any questions himself.

MOD EDIT - locking this one. Way too many groan-inducing replies to make it worth salvaging. To the OP, if Hollowell is willing to post something himself here, let me know - that might be best. - LSA

Well, I mean, some guy in Virginia raise 30k on kickstarter to get Kenny Loggins to play in his living room, so I mean, as far as people asking for money, at least this will help someone get a degree.  If that is ok, this is ok.

So we are OK with giving our favorite band money to fund their next album/project, but it's not OK to give someone tuition help?

He had absolutely no reason not to redshirt and if he had he would be either getting his Master's here or have transferred someplace else to get his Master's. DH was nowhere near big enough his freshman year to not redshirt.

Could someone GoFundPinkFloydAndI (I like what I did there) enough to get Gilmour and Waters together for one last tour? (Or at least enough to play in my backyard around the BBQ pit).

I'm a big proponent of avoiding debt when I can, so I applaud this effort.  That being said, I think there are other places to look than a sports blog.  Here are a few ideas.

  1. Find out if there are fellowships/scholarships out there.  I found this http://www.bestmswprograms.com/top-25-scholarships-for-social-work-stud… within 30 seconds of googling.
  2. Talk to the department.  Find out what resources they have.  Leverage them.
  3. Some sort of federal work-study program may be an option.
  4. The department may have assistantships to offer.  Inquire.  This may even be a good time of year to find them.
  5. Talk to other campus resources (athletic dept, career services) what ideas do they have?

My wife has a MA in counseling, which is a close cousin of a MSW.  She had an assistantship which covered some of her costs at Ball State (in the pre-Hoke era).  Ultimately she took out some loans too.  But (as we are still paying them off) I can understand why you wouldn't want to do that forever.

Delonte may have considered some of these ideas already--it is hard to know with the scant information presented here and on the gofundme page; and I wish him the best of luck in his grad-school endeavors.  One more idea:  talk to some local high schools and try to cobble together a job which he can do while he works on a MSW part time.  I'm guessing that part of the reason that he wants an MSW is to work with kids with troubled backgrounds and find ways to help them build skills and gain confidence to set goals which will drive their future success.  He can do that right now, without a MSW, in the right situation.  Sometimes it is all about finding the right way to make that happen and being willing to be somewhat creative while you do it.

Finally some intelligent debate.  It's too bad he couldn't be a graduate assistant on the or a student teacher. I'm sure with his contacts in the athletic department he could get a decent paying job there while helping to pay his way through school.

Also, I wonder if there's a foundation somewhere that supports former collegiate athletes in their persuit of getting advanced degrees or training?

Has he tried? His GoFundMe Page literally sells based upon "I haven't paid before so maybe you will!" Perhaps the lack of compelling interest or history of exhausting options would have made people feel better about this. He comes across not in a good light.

but I think you are one of the few people to respond negatively and do it intelligently or with reason rather than just say, "Don't be lazy" or  "Get a job". I think that's where my issue is.

Also, I'm sure he is pretty heart broken after not making the NFL even if outsiders always considered it a longshot. There's a human element here. Maybe he should get in touch with Vincent Smith, I bet that would motivate him in a positve direction.

My problem is that it's not a pre-existing story that he wants to improve his community or donate his time to troubled youths or X, Y, Z, A, B, C. I wouldn't be bothered by EITHER Mealer looking to rally this community for support if options were nigh and their work was in rehabilitating those whose mobility had been stolen from them by circumstance. But his GFM quite literally reads/posits he got a BA in Social Work so why not continue because the NFL thing didn't happen. Re-read it:

It's bothersome to me. But thanks for acknowledging I was thinking it out.... I was intending my comments more to represent a side than a ALL CAPS RESPONSE so it's nice to see someone who disagrees at least notes the effort.

My ideas aren't exactly earth shattering -- "Have you googled it?" being a first step -- but I also have a very different experience of knowing that there are opportunities to find ways of funding graduate education.  I've also got the unique perspective of having spent the last 12 years after getting my BS in different academic settings and learning about the different ways that things get funded in academia.  I'm in a STEM field (physics) but I have to believe that there assistantships available despite the relative funding levels of physics and social work.

Remember, Academia is all about networking.  (That's kind of like calling it an old boys' club, except they aren't ALL old boys anymore, especially in social work).  Talk to people.  Make connections.  Bring the secretaries coffee and find out about them, they'll point you to faculty.  Delonte is also somewhat of a celebrity, and an article about him is screaming to be written in the alumni magazine which would reflect well on the social work department.

Lastly, I KNOW that Delonte knows about hard work.  I'm sure he's spent more time working out before 7am over the past 4 years than I have in my entire life.  If he uses that same work ethic he developed with the FB team over the past 4 years in his pursuit of grad funding, he'll be just fine without taking a dime from a gofundme.

He can go get a loan. He can start a GoFundMe. He can DO whatver HE wants.  I hope some people will support him.  Some people won't and that's okay too.  It's def worth a shot for him to see if he can get help.  I think I'll support him!

What a disapointing response from a number of you on here. It's ok to disagree with his approach but you don't have to be a dick.

Personally I won't be donating but I still tip my cap to him for giving this a shot. If he can legally get his tuition paid without taking on debt why in the hell would you give him shit for it?

And I've put my thoughts out there to allow people to destroy me or agree with me:

1) If a child came to my door fundraising for a field trip and said 'buy this because I live next to you and don't want to volunteer to make up the cost of my trip,' I'd be irritated. I see this as the same because a) there's a common, shared interest (neighbors/community) and a desire to avoid personal effort. His Page says "but being that I didn't make it in the NFL this season I wanted to take classes, without taking a loan. I was on scholarship all 4 years so I don't have any debt, so why start now?!" That tells me the Masters is based off of a pre-existing interest only arising due to not making it in the NFL, that he may still be pushing for the NFL and not be focused on completing the degree and that he doesn't want to pick up the tab on said exploration of an interest.

2) Using money of fans towards one source over another. People on here have made personal sacrificie to pursue a degree or a passion. This feels like a push to use said common interest to benefit an individual not showing crisis; I'd rather donate $50 to an MGoScholarship for a High School senior who will do guest pieces and has an interest in Sports Journalism than contribute to a former football player who decided to build a funding website.

The vitriol here is gross.  If you don't agree with the cause. just pass.   As an aside, I wouldn't donate to support Delonte's pursuit of a post graduate degree, but I would donate for his continued excellence on the TWITTERZ.

Take a redshirt. Chances are you will NEVER go pro. The redshirt will give you a 5th year of not paying for college. (It's not free college, tons of time and effort goes into it) That being said, I see nothing wrong with a gofundme, if you don't like it just don't donate.

If he can ask for a free loan from complete strangers to put towards continuing his education, knowing there will certainly be a few who oblige him, why the hell wouldn't he?  You can say what you want, but if I thought for a moment I could set up a gofundme page like this and get positive results out of it, I'd do it too.

That said, it still is pretty weird, but more power to him anyways.

Or in January?  If it's January, I think there's more time to look for some more realistic ways to get that $$$ for grad school.  With the alumni network we have, I'm sure there is a way to get the $13K he's looking for without needing the GoFundMe account.
