Hilarious part of that article is how he got the job.  Korn-Ferrey recommended Oliver Luck which makes perfect sense.  Successful AD, well respected nationally, etc.  Some guy with a bunch of money recommends Patterson, who hires him to help make the AD his fiefdom.

Basically what happened with Iowa's Presidential search, too.

I have followed this story and momentum is building among their fan base to remove him. They are one of the largest and richest athletic departments in the country. I don't see how they can keep him.

That's kind of a deluded post.

(1) Most UT alumni--or at least 100% of the several I know--do not feel even close to that way. It's a very liberal-minded university, after all.

(2) Even if the fans did feel that way, zero moderns ADs would ever *fathom* firing a coach with that motivation.

(3) Your "as sad as that sounds" qualifier gives the post an "unlike what happens in Ann Arbor" character, which is unmindful that as recently as the 1990s a very vocal minority of Michigan fans wrote Steve Fisher vicious racist, anti-Fab 5 hate mail. On this point, I could accept Texas having that type of minority opinion, but not if it's being used to imply why Michigan is morally superior by comparison.

lost its direction when business people began weaseling their way into the athletic offices.  That soul is long gone.  I kind of feel sorry for young people today who have no idea or any recollection of what college athletics used to be before big money took over.

Looking at this again, I now remember that Patterson was President of the Trailblazers in the mid 2000's.  "Broken economic model" with the Rose Garden arena, poor team performance, temporary "For Sale" sign for the team during his tenure.  A lot of fan disenchantment in Oregon during his reign.  Same results, different town...  (Obviously, UT is not for sale, but you get my point..)

The Red River Shootout against Oklahoma on Oct. 10 - normally one of the toughest tickets in college football - has roughly 8,000 unsold tickets on the Texas side of the Cotton Bowl.

Speaking of "You know it is bad when...", you know you have a shit AD in Texas when this game is not a sellout on the Texas side of the stadium. I don't think I have ever heard of this game not being sold out, even if one team was blowing chunks in a given year.

"stop drinking and go to bed" or "go find a new team" emails and he'll be gone just like Davey boy.  Sounds like he's pretty much put every other nail in the coffin he'll soon be sharing with Dave.

D1 AD's around the country are chatting about this and they even did a breaking news on D1 Ticker for all athletic admnistrators this morning.

Here's the breaking news:

Breaking news items are few & far between for D1.ticker, mainly because your time is valuable & only the most important developments have such a macro impact that they call for an interruption of the work day. But, this one applies because of the track record of who is reporting it, notable Texas beat writer Brown who has detailed a number of sensitive issues for the Longhorns over the past couple of years, & the recent tepid comments by UT Prez Fenves on his relationship with AD Patterson. Here are the facts in Brown's latest piece on the situation that came out earlier this morning: 1) Billionaire supporter Jamil has apparently pulled his FB suite for the rest of the season due to his unhappiness with the direction of the department & it's now being used for the visiting AD; 2) Fenves has asked Patterson to repair some key donor relationships & reduce the amount of feedback landing on his desk about Patterson's performance, but that noise has yet slow; 3) Former Pulse Point exec & Pac-12 media consultant Hunt is Patterson's closest confidant & has been pushing for favorable media coverage with key local reporters; and 4) A note that Korn/Ferry advised former Prez Powers to hire then-West Virginia AD Luck before Patterson got the gig. Lots of smoke in Austin. - link

Maybe if I find myself with time on my hands later I'll try to piece this together myself, but maybe somebody here that's close to the situation might already know.

Are the people pulling money from the program to force Patterson out now more or less the same group that were pulling money to force DeLoss Dodds out a few years ago? Or are there two different factions at war here?

And if it's the latter, are the divisions still related to the old Royal/Akers split?

Every time I read about the goings on at Texas I feel like I've been reading the same story for 40 years, and I wish I'd paid more attention so I'd have a better idea of what's happening. And then I realize I'm glad I didn't have to pay attention to it all.
