Utah/Utah State Open Thread
Watching last week's opponent to try to figure out how good they are.
7-0 Utes late first, though USU is driving after a great catch on a deep ball and a roughing the passer penalty. Spread is a little more effective running the ball than we were, which is concerning me. Utah's offense has looked pretty good with an easy TD drive and a second really promising drive that was killed by a penalty that the refs forgot to announce (PAC-12 refs!).
Early indications are a little concerning for the offense but encouraging for the defense.

Yeah, I've said that and I'm still not so sure they're not. Maybe Minnesota is better, but I'm not ready to commit to that. If BYU was totally healthy, I'd consider them as well, but they're not.
I didn't think Penn State was better than any of those teams this summer, and I'm feeling awfully perceptive about at least that one team right now.

"More games are decided by special teams than by offense and defense" - Wannstedt
I get your point, but I highly doubt this is even close to accurate.

But how is he back in the booth for this halftime update?!

I am just going to remind myself that the transitive property doesn't always hold and that correlation is not causation

regardless of how Utah plays, as long as our team gets better over the season, it should be fine

Utah is screwed if Wilson is out for the season.
He's in street clothes on the sideline in a sling with ice.

How did this receiver slip by all the other PAC 12 teams?

Utah's passing game is straight outta peewee football.

Glad to see Covey is back. When he went to the locker room after that hit to the head, it looked like he was gone for the game, not just the rest of the half.

Wilson may be done for the day, but Keeton may as well be done. It looks like he can barely stand back there.

Can't make the throws right now. Poor guy. Was really exciting back when he was healthy.

I know Miami has been going downhill for a while now, but it's still hard to believe that they are tied with FAU in the third quarter. On a Friday night. Playing on the road. The very existence of this game tonight is confusing, but watching the game is just unbelievable.
Maybe back in the day you could just out-talent other teams, but these days coaching very much matters.

The only two Miami drives I have watched came off FAU turnovers in their own territory. Miami came away with 3 points total on those two drives so I won't give them the points yet.

Utah does not handle these WR screens well.

Mack Brown telling us that Utah should take as much time as possible before punting here. After telling us the sack/fumble is a really big play in the game so far.
Good god he could say "the team that scores the most is gonna win this game" and I wouldn't think he was joking. It's like if your grandfather coaching football. As others have said, it's shocking they were a dominant team in football for so long under him.

He was a "Bobby Bowden" type of coach. A good 'ole boy figurehead that could recruit. He let his assistants handle the gritty day-to-day details.

USU really should stop letting Keaton play on that knee.

I love college football, but there are way too many injuries. We are not even into the second weekend and at least a dozen key players on P5 teams are out for the season or for a significant amount of time.
This season had been absolute carnage and it's only Sep 12th.

I agree. Someone really oughta adjust the sliders.

No, Mack Brown, Gary Anderson did not visit the Big House with Wisconsin. In fact, has Wisconsin been there since 2008?
September 12th, 2015 at 12:16 AM ^
2010. But that was when Bielema was at UW.

Mack Brown has provided some decent commentary, nonetheless, saying Gary Andersen has made a previous trip to the Big House - with Wisconsin - was not one of his finer moments.

Mack Brown is all over every coach's knob. Not exactly razor-sharp analysis.

They should take all the time off the clock for that jackass pretending not to be down and running to the endzone. His knee and elbow, and possibly his other knee were down.

It can be educational at times though. Watching USU be able to run on Utah confirms how far we really have to go on the O-Line and RB (and the playcalling to help mitigate our weakness there).
