Utes fans plan to distribute Alex Smith heads on Sep 3 to "haunt" Harbaugh
According to a Utes sportswriter, Utah fans are planning to distribute Alex Smith heads around the stadium for the game.
Word on the street is Alex Smith heads will be randomly distributed throughout RES. Welcome to Utah, Harbaugh.

I'm unclear as to what the dig is supposed to be - Harbaugh is widely credited with turning Alex Smith's career around. Perhaps they are trying to overwhelm Harbaugh with examples of his good coaching?
At any rate, this does make me want to see the Utes go down more than I already did. They seem pretty dismissive of Michigan as a whole (which I can't blame them for given our last couple of meetings).

What's next, Iowa fans holding up Jake Rudock pictures after Harbuagh turns his career around too?

Alex Smith is just further proof of Harbaugh's mastery with QBs. I'd take the signs as a compliment.

"Hey, if it weren't for you the best quarterback our program ever produced would've been labeled one of the biggest draft busts in NFL history so...fuck you?"
First the Popular Mechanics thing and now this. The Utes really need to work on their bulletin board material--giving and receiving it.

I hope the first thing Harbaugh does is find the largest and most rabid group of Smithheadholders and runs right over to them with a big smile and pulls out his famous sharpie and says "Who wants an autograph?" The fans will flood him with Smith heads to sign and everyone will go nuts and suddenly it's a home game with all 7 or 8 thousand fans or whatever that place holds having been converted to Michigan fans and Harbaughmaniacs! Utah might even forfeit at that stage.

I don't know, but if we ever play Kansas we should.

To remind Harbaugh that he can turn even the crappiest of QBs into Pro Bowlers? That he can take one of the best QBs Urban Meyer ever produced and make him usable outside of his system? Yeah, that will haunt his dreams.

I guess Utah fans, in their distorted view (since Smith is a former Ute), think Harbaugh lost the Super Bowl because he went with Kap instead of Smith. And they think this fact is clear to outsiders. Only possible explanation in my mind, and still makes very little sense.

By bringing up Alex Smith, are they trying to remind fans of the stats for the formerly underperforming overall #1 draft pick?
stats:
PreHarbaugh
** (2005-2010, 50 starts), 57% completion, 6.2 YPA, 51 TD vs 53 INT
Harbaugh years:
** (2011-2015, 25 starts) 65% (7.4 YPA), 30 TD vs 10 INT
Maybe it's going to be Jim Harbaugh appreciation day thanking him for the work he did with Smith?
The mind boggles.

Maybe instead of Alex Smith bobbleheads, they have an Alex Smith Legends Patch (a la NC State)!

Hahah, sounds like some Utah fans are getting scaaaared. Harbaugh is already in opposing fans' heads.

The locals are now revering Alex Smith as the descendant of Joseph Smith, their guy with the golden tablets and the magic underwear. I think they're crediting Harbaugh with having Alex raptured by showing him how to play quarterback. Ever since Harbaugh benched him, though, Raptured Alex has been waiting for a chance to return to Salt Lake and haunt him by appearing as multiple cutout heads of himself.

Harbaugh should call and have Alex Smith on the sideline with Michigan for the game :)

I think we have to give it time - Utah is fairly new to the world of football trolling and needs to at least get some of their experimental work out there before they begin to settle on working strategies. An Alex Smith head kind of has a "Wow, that's some souvenir" (obvious sarcasm is obvious, of course) feel to it, but eventually they will get this right.

I could pick out Alex Smith from a lineup...and I'm a Chiefs fan. Just don't get you, you crazy irregular hexagonal state.

Many Utah fans think Harbaugh did Alex Smith an injustice on the 49'ers when he didn't let Smith take back his starting spot from Kaepernick after being sidelined with a concussion. This was after Smith led them to the NFC Championship game the year prior and was having an outstanding season up to that point.
I don't think "haunt" is the right word and is causing the confusion. It's more like vengence although the 9'ers did start to backslide after that season which could be seen as a haunting on that qb decision I suppose.
To me, not that big a deal, JH helped Smith improve and earn the nice contract he has now with KC. But hey, whatever gets people up.
I was in Ann Arbor for the game last year - enjoyed the atmosphere and the UM fans, hope those coming out have a good time and I hope we kick your asses ;)
Go Utes!
