OT - Women's World Cup Day 3 - USA v Australia
The USWNT takes on top 10 ranked Australia in their World Cup opener at 7:30 pm ET. Match will be on FS1, with coverage starting at 6:30.
The Sweden-Nigeria match just finished. And for those that don't know, Sweden's manager was the USWNT manager in the previous World Cup cycle. Sweden and Nigeria are also in the US' group and it was a very entertaining match. 3-3 final, Sweden looked to be running away with it after a 2-0 lead heading into halftime. But the Nigerian women battled back and tied it up, only to fall behind once again. They equalized in the 87'. Very impressive for the team that is supposed to be the weakest in the group, espeically considering they rarely get to travel outside Africa due to lack of support. They are easily the most entertaining team I've seen in the WWC so far and they'll be tough to top in that department.
US women will have their work cut out for them in this group and they can't take any match for granted. Things were looking shaky for the women before they won the Algrave Cup and optimism was raised once again. Then they had a poor performance against South Korea in their final WC warmup.
Hope everyone is enjoying the tournament. It's wide open this year and several teams have a legitimate chance to win it, including the US.
Also gotta say that FS1 is knocking it out of the park when it comes to in studio coverage. Had an all female panel on Saturday, but the men have started to contribute now. Every match is on TV and most are on FS1 or regular Fox. Credit to the network for putting this together and now I'm much more optimistic about when they cover the men's WC from 2018-2026.

I've caught bits and pieces of most of the matches and apart from the germany game every team has looked off it
I can never really tell how good these womens teams are because the consistency of play is kind of all over the place.
the australians deserve a draw, they won't get one
I'd say the aussies have been more convincing going forward and if it wasn't for a spectacular individual effort from solo this could easily be 3-2 or 4-2

Starting to actually possess the ball more. Need to do this all game and actually utilize our talent advantage. If we play every match like we did today, we'll only advance because we have more talent. Not because that talent played well.

Rapinoe killing it.
Great game for her relative to her teammates and competition in this one, no doubt, but I can't put her ahead of Mia, Abby, Marta, Sawa in their primes just to name a few.
You are just looking at scorers, which is just one parameter. Rapinoe who is 29 and has years left plays a COMPLETE game as a midfielder. Christine Lily was what made the great teams go. I am talking about playing offense, defense, seeing the field, assists, organizing teammates, etc. Abby has benefited greatly from feeds from Rampinoe that others could not make.
That should put it away.
Jill Ellis should be thanking her lucky stars.
Aussies played better most of this match IMO. Just not showing on the scoreboard. If we played like they did, we'd have 6-7 goals easy.
I would have waited another 5-6 minutes to bring Morgan on. I think it's important to get her some time, but the match is out of reach. She doesn't need more than a handful of minutes, not 15.
Kidding, this game is over. Just wanted to make that reference as much as possible.

She's been pretty piss-poor all game. She should be a sub, particularly with all the forward options we have. Personally, LeRoux and Press up front for me. At least until Morgan gets healthy.
where is Jamie to give us the betting line on the first foul throw of the match
We played better the last 15 minutes. Play like that and we'll have a chance to win this thing. Play like we did the first 75 minutes and we won't come close to making the final. If we didn't have Solo in goal, we'd have been down 2/3-0 before we could even respond.
Still, huge win in this group. Want to win it so we can avoid Brazil early in the knockouts.
A win is a win despite a bad 1st half. Got the important 3 points and an inside track for 1st place in Group D. A win against Sweden would make it a lot easier because Nigeria would present a lot of problem at the flank for USWNT defense.
