OT: Texas has their own Dave Brandon & Lochdawg

Submitted by DISCUSS Man on

don't know how many people on here ever read shaggybevo, but that site is hilarious. They have been irate with their athletic director and how similar he is to DB. They have mentioned him being DB on that site.

This is an article from the Austin American-Statesman that was published awhile ago. It's no longer up and requires a sub to read it so here is most of it that I found on shaggybevo:

The person most responsible for turning up the music, finding DJs and bringing fireworks to Texas athletic events is Felisa Israel, a striking brunette just under 6 feet tall with copper-toned skin, charisma and someone who, quite frankly, got a little freaked when the locals refer to her as ma'am. She's from LA.

Israel, who has a long background in working with NBA teams, had never really spent much time in Austin. She knew of Texas men's athletic director Steve Patterson from their days together at the Portland Trail Blazers.

When Patterson came to Texas in the fall of 2013, he saw what most Longhorns fans have known for years. The Frank C. Erwin Jr. Special Events Center has about the same dull, lackluster basketball atmosphere as the name implies.

No offense to the progressive former Texas regent, of course. So Patterson hired Israel to, as she said, "sprinkle some professional sports dust on what's going on here."

Welcome to Club Erwin. Patterson didn't want to know what was planned.

"They told me they had some good things coming and they wanted to surprise me," he said.

Israel went to work.

"The first thing that came into my head was how am I going to incorporate Kevin Durant's MVP speech?," Israel said.
The arena staff was incredibly helpful with some out-of-the-box ideas. What about lasers? What about video mapping, the hot new NBA craze? That's where an image is projected onto the floor to give it a three-dimensional look. Katy Perry used it during the Super Bowl. But Israel said 90 seconds of video mapping costs $100,000. Per game.
"I said let's get a $7,500 disco ball and start with that," Israel said.
A new pregame video featuring Durant, a darkened arena, lights bouncing off the mirror ball and some on-court pyrotechnics create a completely different environment lasting 2 minutes, 30 seconds.
"I think they've tried to embrace who we are. I think it's awesome," said Texas coach Rick Barnes, now in his 17th season. "
I know I appreciate it, and I know the players do." Patterson made a lot of die-hard fans nervous when he first took over in November 2013 because he suggested changes were coming. "Everyone's afraid of change. Everyone's afraid of the unexpected," Israel said.
Club Erwin is a prime example of Patterson's laser-like focus on improving customer relations and the fan experience. That's what Disney Institute officials stressed during their meetings with Texas administrators in Orlando, Fla.
"We can't control what happens on the field, but we can control how people feel," said Brent Centlivre, Texas' account manager at the Disney Institute.
"Even if it's a close game and we lost, did someone thank me for coming? Did someone say they appreciate me being here? "I'm going to remember how someone treated one

of my daughters as opposed to whether Texas won the game," he added.

Bringing fans back Reporters who cover Texas football games would be aghast at the scene in the Royal-Memorial Stadium press box. It now looks like a Wall Street trading floor, with dozens of computer workstations, dual monitors and more than 20 people smiling and dialing. The press box inside Bellmont Hall is now the home to "the largest customer service and sales team in collegiate athletics," said Bernie Mullin, CEO of The Aspire Group.
"It's not even close." Patterson initially signed a one-year services contract with Aspire to outsource Texas' ticket selling operations.

"Wabash Cannonball, March Grandioso, Texas Fight, that is not going away," Hank said. "We are not here to denigrate, ruin, get rid of the traditions that have made the University of Texas great. But you know what? Every tradition started somewhere." Israel has carte blanche to try new things this fall at Royal-Memorial Stadium.
As a self-professed "band geek," she smartly brings up ways to go about highlighting the Texas band.
"I definitely want to enhance it. I want to make it more fun, make them more of a presence than they already are," she said. School officials have already confirmed to the Statesman that Jet Pack Guy won't return in 2015. Trey Goldsmith, longtime marketing consultant for Mighty Fine Burgers, is excited about what opportunities lie ahead at Texas athletic events. "The fact they're willing to do a jet pack says to me they're willing to do almost anything," Goldsmith said.

Texas officials said they've budgeted $200,000 for Israel's consulting, paying the DJs, adding pyrotechnics and all the new extras at the Erwin Center.

good lord, she is the female lochdawgg. These people need to be banned from college athletics.

Look at their complaints about their AD in this thread. seems very familiar. http://www.shaggybevo.com/board/showthread.php/152451-Steve-Patterson-i…

People like this have no clue why college athletics have been revered for decades, beyond the life of most pro sports leagues. They think they can apply their pro sports / "Increase shareholder value" corporate perspectives to help college athletic departments and they just truly do not get it.

Sacrifice the longterm to extract the most you can right now

For wanting to be rid of Brandon so badly, it seems some want to keep bringing him up. Let's just let it go. He's gone.

I found them a pretty sweet football helmet about five threads down.  I wonder if they can make that helmet spew pyrotechnics?  Are helmets that spew pyrotechnics legal?

The fact this statement is made about a collge sport scene makes me sad.

I hate overpaid "grown-ups" who mess around with college traditions.  You have the rest of the world to try these dumb-ass idea out on; leave fall saturdays alone.

Importing Israel into Texas. It's a mismatch destined for Hell. She'll be run out of town soon enough after the husbands complain they just want ball, beer and beef. I recently returned from Austin and may I say, "God Bless Texas!" Ain't nowhere else like it son.

It sounds like they have a good time at basketball games. The students and players I mean. Just because you do something for 50-100 years doesn't mean it's the only fun/good way to do it. There's a difference between adding fun pregame festivities to a sporting event and turning it into an all out NBA fuck fest with music playing during the game and other idiotic shit.

This is really random, but does anyone have the link to the video of the guy in the gorilla suit dancing to "Michigan Wins"?. A friend of mine just committed to UM so I want to send her it.

Dear Lord. How do these people have no clue that the sentiment is directly connected to the outcome of the game?

Sweet Jesus, these idiots are even more extreme than Brandon.

It's amazing how ADs like Patterson and Brandon can't seem to recognize the fundamental distinction between a pro franchise and an educational institution's sports teams.

I have an acquaintance who used to promote the Disney Institute to various companies. When Disney made it a revenue generating business in the mid-90s, he ran its business development activity.

I found it astonishing when he told me a few years later some of the groups who had taken courses that lasted from a day or two to a week or more, including U.S. Government agencies, colleges and universities, and many, many Fortune 500 companies. It's a substantial piece of business for DisneyWorld.

Honestly I was expecting worse. So they want to treat people well at the games. So they want to amplify the band. In spirit, the things they're talking about in this article are not nearly as bad as what ol' Lochdogg was cooking up.

The basic problem Texas has doesn't surround marketing or ticket prices or the game day experience--it's the recent lack of football success.  UT has gone from a team that won double digit games through the first decade of the century (including a national championship) to a middle of the pack at best status.  The team's record the last five seasons were 5-7, 8-5, 9-4, 8-5 and 6-7.  No wonder the fans on that board are crabby.

Another part of that Texas situation that parallels what's happened at Michigan in recent years is the UT's in-state rivals are now challenging them, i.e., Texas A&M, Texas Christian and Baylor, much like Michigan State is now.  Add in Ohio State's success against UM parallelling how well Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry (10-5 for OU since 2000 including some real one sided losses) and yeah, folks are pointing fingers at the Athletic Director.  If Texas gets its program turned around under Charlie Strong like we expect Harbaugh to do at Michigan, then the volume of the bitching will go way down.

One other thing I noticed from the fan comments is the home schedule that Texas plays in Austin.  With a commitment to play OU in Dallas each season and a nine-game Big XII schedule, it means UT plays six games each year at their home stadium with four of them in conference.

In 2015, Texas gets Oklahoma State, Kansas State, Kansas and Texas Tech at home (along with California and Rice).  Next season, it's Baylor, Iowa State, West Virginia and Texas Christian in Austin (with Notre Dame and UTEP).  While some of those Big XII teams have been pretty good recently (TCU and Baylor), they aren't exactly the bluebloods of college football.  To their credit, UT does put together one very strong home-and-home series each year (Notre Dame is in 2015/6) and they have a second Power 5 team on the docket the next four seasons (California in 2015/6 and Maryland in 2017/8).

Interestingly enough, having two Power 5 teams on the non-conference schedule may have been what David Brandon was planning once the Big Ten went to its nine-game conference schedule.  He did get Washington and Virginia Tech on the 2020/1 schedules, but he resigned/got fired before he put together anymore non-conference scheduling.  What will Jim Hackett and Jim Harbaugh do?  Schedule up with two P5 non-conference games or schedule down with only one on the non-conference schedule?

We should know soon enough because Hackett is going to have to find an one non-conference opponent for 2018 (Arkansas and SMU are two home games scheduled) and two for 2019 (UM opens season at Arkansas).

In my mind's eye, having a successful football team playing games against interesting opponents is the best marketing on the planet.  Michigan has annual games locked in each year with Ohio State, Penn State and Michigan State plus one with a major opponent from the Big Ten West  starting in 2016 (with Wisconsin on the schedule from 2016 to 2019).  If Hackett goes the route that Brandon might have been taking by adding two Power 5 teams to the non-conference schedule along with a non-MAC opponent, I suspect the fans would really enjoy it.
