Bacon: Harbaugh getting $5 mil per year, same as SF deal
BREAKING NEWS: Straight from UM AD Jim Hackett. Harbaugh's salary will be roughly $5M a year, plus incentives, same basic contract as 49ers.
So much for "Harbaugh is only leaving the NFL because UM overpaid him"

I’m sure some will question the $8M per Michigan will spend on Jim Harbaugh. They did the same for Bama & Nick Saban. Answer: It’s worth it.

It makes no sense to most of the national media guys. This makes total sense to us. We bleed blue. So does Jim. He's a guy who cares passionately about winning and this university. He doesn't give a shit what his pants look like or how big his paycheck is after a certain level (How big of a lifestyle difference is $5MM vs. 8MM?). His ego isn't wrapped up in money, his identity is wrapped up in Hail to the Victors, Bo, Ufer, touching the banner and shaping a team and young men.
I should have known better. The media got suckered by an agent putting out fake numbers, and we got suckered by the media.
This is what makes sense. This is Jim Harbaugh. This is Michigan.
December 30th, 2014 at 11:23 AM ^
As far as I can tell, the guy is mainly crazed to succeed. I'm not sure Harbaugh's motivated by devotion to his alma mater, as in a sense of obligation. Rather, I think this is a desire to bring Michigan back. When Michigan succeeds, we all feel pride, and the past few years had to have been as frustrating for him to watch as with any of us.
The NFL is a business, and like any other materialistic part of America these days, they're baffled that anyone can be motivated by anything other than money. Thing about the NFL is, you can reach the Super Bowl and be shown the door two years later (oh wait, that actually happened). Rebuild your alma mater and they'll literally name buildings after you. This is about legacy.
NFL: "You can't buy a legacy!"
Us: "Exactly."

Hold on I can hear the narrative now - its emerging...shh...listen with your ear to the ground. aha..
UM IS CHEAP! UNDERPAID JIM HARBAUGH AND BACKED HIM INTO THE CORNER THIS ONE YEAR WITH HIS LIMITED NFL OPPORTUNITIES. HE IS SO GONE TO THE NFL NEXT YEAR SINCE UM WOULD NOT PAY HIM.

Anyone get chills when reading the part saying Harbaugh is more worried about paying his assistants? That's a big part of how championships are won. Michigan has not had top notch coordinators with a top notch head coach in a loooong time. Harbaugh+Durkin+Roman+Mattison as an assiatant=an awesome staff! I know those guys are not officially on the staff yet, but it looks like thats who it's going to be. Cant wait to see what transpires over the coming months!
December 30th, 2014 at 10:34 AM ^
I'm curious about what the whole package looks like. There were some rumors that the contract was backloaded to provide incentive to stick around longer. Does that mean it is, on average, $5MM a year or that's just where it starts?
Great to hear the man cares about getting his assistants paid. Everything about this man gets more positive and incredi-awesome all the time. Whew... go blue!!!!

But, but, all the NFL reporters believe that his heart is in the NFL. Thats intuition you just can't argue away with facts or reasoning.
December 30th, 2014 at 10:37 AM ^
I'm torn again. Who do I believe? The entire media, MSU fans and OSU fans have stated for the past week he doesn't give a crap about Michigan. He's only coming here for the money so he can swim in it like Scrooge McDuck.

Harbaugh has been channeling Bo throughout this entire process, and this just confirms it even more. I guess I picked an appropriate time to read "Bo's Lasting Lessons."

Maybe Docker's has him lined up as a spokesman. Said only somewhat in jest.

I just got a set of these Dockers Game Day pants - Michigan version. There's a khaki version, too. Seems like a great opportunity for Jim.

this just tops off what has been such a surrel few days. He is already at mythic status in my book. I couldn't get over seeing guys like Michael Silver openly chuckle yesterday about how 'diabolical' it would be if JH was still using UM as a negotiating ploy this late in the game. He added that if true it would be brilliant. The NFL is dead to me.

... Jim burned so many bridges in the locker room that he couldn't even get a team to offer him the same amount as he was getting in SF. Shows how bad things really got in SF and why he had to hurry to go back to college. He really had no other options.

December 30th, 2014 at 11:19 AM ^
They haven't said anything yet. It just scrolled along the bottom news line thing about how he's getting $5 mil/year plus incentives and included how Harbaugh said he didn't want to be the highest paid CFB coach and is more concerned about his assistants.

I thought Bacon wasn't credible and no longer had sources?
(at least based on the comments of some here the past couple of months---or since 3 and Out for even others).
I trust John is (deservedly) back in good standing.

I was fine with the 6Y/48M that was previously reported, but I like this much better. It shows that JH was not drawn to M just for the large amount of money. HE WANTS TO BE HERE.
Seriously, these NFL guys are such a joke.

I seriously wouldn't have cared if we had paid him $10M/year. Jim is already exceeding expectations.
Yesterday, I was trying to explain to my stupid friend in the office why he would take the job for less than the universe. Non-Michigan people just can't seem to understand.

7 year deal
A bit more detail: Harbaugh contract is approximately $5 million for 7 years, with incentives. Clearly, Michigan would like him to stay.

My thought was that if Harbaugh wanted to coach at Michigan, he would see this as his best chance to do that. The stars might not align again like they did this time. Hackett was serious about getting a big time coach and wasn't going to bet on a Brady Hoke-ish job candidate. He was looking for stability and an end to "3 or 4 and out". So, he did it for Michigan, and not for his bank account. That's the Jim Harbaugh we all know. He's not all about the $$$. His idol, Bo, would be so proud of him. He wants to build a strong staff and team and win for Michigan.

Yeah, but is there an incentive for trucking Dantonio and then slapping him on the back? That's gotta be worth a couple mil, no?
December 30th, 2014 at 11:01 AM ^
ESPN ran their smear campaign telling the world the San Fran relationship fell apart largely in part due to Jim Harbaugh wanting to be among the highest paid coaches in the NFL.
