"It’s the block M that has power, not Denard Robinson"

Submitted by Blue and Joe on

Full quote from Michigan CMO Hunter Lochman on college athletes potentially being paid:

“The athletes are there for four years. At Michigan, it’s the block M that has the infinity and power, not Denard Robinson. Those are fleeting, four-year relationships, but it’s the block M that’s been there for over 150 years.”

Tired of highly paid, highly educated people making dumb statements in the name of Michigan athletics.

Clearly money and education are not the end all, be all when it comes to common sense.

Messner, Hammerstein, Grbac, Howard, Harmon, Oosterbaan, Chappius, Heston, and thousands of other players and coaches who built the Team.

The power behind the M is the players and coaches. That Lochmann doesn't understand this ought to mean his dimissal. To not understand why a place is great, why it is so alluring to so many, is a unforgivable sin for a marketer. How can you sell what you don't understand?

Where would UM be if Yost, Crisler, and Bo never came here?

They are the ones who lead the construction of the block M and sustained it. It was through their leadership and ideas that the program went from an nonentity to a historical preeminent position in the sport.

The block M exists only because individuals crafted and perfected it. That Hunter Lochmann does not understand this betrays to me a lack of intellectual depth on his part. He clearly has not spent much time thinking about the football program and it's past.

It's a two-way street between the University and its traditions, and the coaches/athletes. Everyone benefits.

Hunter Lochman, shame on you for not recognizing that.

I'd say that's cause for him to join Dave Brandon in his new work, whatever that is.

I think back on all of my fond memories of Block M #1 throwing TDs to Block M #10. How could I ever forget way back in my childhood, seeing Block M #3 ran behind Block Ms #4-9. ...but seriously, this guy can get bent.

Seriously, fuck this guy. Whoever "Hunter Lochman" is, I think the University could do just fine without him on their payroll.

Extra money for Harbaugh, and I'm boiling like a pressure cooker that he took a shot at DENARD of all people like he did. I cannot explain his comment or my rage.

Between this douchnozzle and Brady Hoke, Dave Brandon will leave behind the legacy of making the most hilarious personnel decisions of all time.

Jim Harbaugh rolling into town next year and winning 10 games will only further that notion.

Is another example of the lack of basic understanding of marketing as a field and a profession that has been so prevalent in the AD. Anyone who has spent any time with true professionals can recognize the utter cluelessness of this department at U-M. Mr. Lochmann is the embodiment of the Peter Principle in action. I'm sure Dave Hackett is evaluating his performance as closely as he did Brady Hoke's. Since his is only an interim role, he may not make a change, preferring to allow a permanent AD make decisions related to his staff. Nevertheless, my hope - for both his sake and the department - is that Hackett develop Mr. Lochmann's professional skills. The mistakes he is making in his CMO role are evidence of someone clearly out of his depth. These gaffes anywhere else - and I am not only referring to this episode, but the trail of destruction left in his wake for the past year - would probably have gotten him fired already.

I'm actually inclined to buy into this point of view.  Michigan is ... well MICHIGAN

It is clearly one of the top 2 or 3 schools in the country that has it all.   As a TRUE student athelete you want to have both academics and athletics.   Maybe one other school, Stanford has it ... but i really don't think they have the total student perspective.

You gotta to have a beer.

I mean, what role do four-year relationships have to do with someone's college experience? When I think back on college, things like friends, roomates, and mentors are nothing compared to brands and logos! /s

A few more quotes like that and Lochmann is going to find himself as casualty #3 of an upset fanbase within the year.

And if he really means the things he's saying, I hope he speaks up more. Sounds like we could use to rid ourselves of the MBA-wielding tool
