If the Tigers are trading Porcello there's no way they can deal Price unless they'd be getting an MLB-ready starter as part of the package.
EDIT: Didn't see the report about a second trade involving a pitcher. Still don't think they can deal Price ... unless it's because they're signing Max.

Any idea on the other trade?
December 11th, 2014 at 10:06 AM ^
Cespedes for Giancarlo Stanton, because DD is a wizard.
December 11th, 2014 at 10:01 AM ^
Whoa!! They must feel confident about re-signing Max. Cabrera, Vmart and Cespedes would make a bad freakin' ass line up.
December 11th, 2014 at 10:17 AM ^
Cespedes hardly sniffs the former two.
December 11th, 2014 at 10:34 AM ^
He doesn't have the average, but he is what they needed. A power arm in the outfield that provides 20-30 HR's. Hopefully with the other two in the lineup that will help his on base % climb.
December 11th, 2014 at 11:31 AM ^
Cespedes will not have the pressure of being 'the man' to produce. I believe that DD will do what needs to be done to get Max signed up or get other pieces before the season starts.

of Miggy and Vmart will do for th Cespedes' average. . .
December 11th, 2014 at 11:17 AM ^
If you have a lineup with Cabrera-Cespedes-VMart, that would be lethal. You can't pitch around Cespedes so you'll have to come in that strike zone. Think about the pitches JD Martinez will see if those guys are on base in front of him.
December 11th, 2014 at 11:28 AM ^
Isn't Cabrera usually in the 4 spot and V-Mart in the 5 to protect? Where do you put Cespedes? 3 spot to maximize protection of pitching around?
December 11th, 2014 at 11:31 AM ^
Cabrera has been in the 3 spot for the last couple of years. Last year it was Miggy, VMart then JD.
December 11th, 2014 at 11:34 AM ^
Last season Miggy and Victor mainly hit third and fourth, respectively, with either A-Jax or Kinsler leading off and Torii in the 2-hole.

Gose/Davis
Kinsler
Cabby
VMart
Cespedes
J.D.
Castellanos
Avila
Iglesias

I like this lineup alot. Speed at the top and bottom. 4 truly dangerous hitters in the middle. Only one hole that I can see: Avila
December 11th, 2014 at 12:05 PM ^
Believe it or not, Avila isn't as bad as people make him out to be. Plus defender behind the plate, and walks a shit ton. Its nothing fancy, and he strikes out too much, but you can do worse. *ducks*
December 11th, 2014 at 12:26 PM ^
Exactly. The people that complain about Avila are the same who think batting average and how many RBIs they have are super important to being a good hitter.
December 11th, 2014 at 12:53 PM ^
I'm not a flat earther when it comes to advanced stats, but if the guy doesn't do a good job hitting for average, that's a problem and it indicates he's not good at hitting the baseball. What good does it do to put these power hitters on base, but nobody can knock them in. They drafted McCann and project him to be the catcher of the future. Well let him have a serious shot to win the job in Spring Training.
December 11th, 2014 at 2:41 PM ^
and since Avila is the catcher-most-likely-to-get-hurt-in-the-MLB, McCann will get his chance this upcoming year. If McCann can produce like he was able to in the minors, we may see more of him than we saw of Bryan Holladay this past year, which was significant.
December 11th, 2014 at 1:41 PM ^
and even more so when you compare him to the other guys that play catcher in the majors. He's a solidly average offensive catcher. He's far better than average defensively. However, for the people who think batting average is the only thing to consider...

Speed isn't the only component. Neither guy get's on base at a high enough clip to be a great option. Gose doesn't hit for a high enough average and Davis rarely walks.
Not to mention Kinsler being a huge question mark, considering how awful he was offensively in the second half.
December 11th, 2014 at 2:03 PM ^
Davis is probably your leadoff hitter against lefties. They may move Kinsler up and Cespedes to the two hole against righties. I don't think its the dumbest idea ever to hit avila in the two hole. High OBP and when he is not striking out will generally hit the ball to the right side.
December 11th, 2014 at 5:08 PM ^
not much
still will swing at sliders outer half/plus
even if you tell him its coming...
he will, however, win another hr derby!!!
December 11th, 2014 at 10:02 AM ^
I won't believe it until i see it tweeted by Gil Brandt.

you'd know it was bullshit.
December 11th, 2014 at 10:02 AM ^
allows them to hold on to Max, I'm cool with it. But I sure would have liked to keep both if possible. Rick has a great future ahead of him. But the Sawx??? Shit.
December 11th, 2014 at 11:23 AM ^
You can't keep him, Max and Price. And Price is the best lefty in the AL, possibly second best behind Kershaw. Not a bad move considering they traded their #4 starter for a starting corner outfielder with an above average arm.

Looks like there is more to this deal than anticipated. The Tigers are acquiring a pitcher in a second trade today, per @jonmorosi.
December 11th, 2014 at 10:07 AM ^
Hopefully bullpen guy(s).
December 11th, 2014 at 10:03 AM ^
Porcello is on his way to being a number 2 starter for a long time.

I agree, but get over it. It is one bad trade done for salary cap reasons. We have benefited assymatrically from the Granderson trade, the Cabrera trade, the JDM signing, the Price trade, etc.
December 11th, 2014 at 10:39 AM ^
so signing him to an extension wasn't likely to happen.
December 11th, 2014 at 10:46 AM ^
Should have got much more for him.
Our starters could easily have been:
Verlander, Porcello, Fister, Smiley, Anibal.... This assumes we lose Max (we will) and comes at a far smaller price than substituting Price and Greene for any of the middle 2. Dombrowski has been great, but he's still working his way out of the Fister debacle (actually turned him into Greene rather than Ray which is a good deal)
December 11th, 2014 at 10:55 AM ^
head hurt.
December 11th, 2014 at 11:27 AM ^
You're assuming Verlander returns to his old self, Anibal stays healthy, Smyly turns out to be more than a one year wonder at SP, and we can keep both Fister and Porcello beyond 2015.
December 11th, 2014 at 11:33 AM ^
As long as Verlander is distracted by Ms. Upton and her assets, he'll be a shadow of his former self.
The best thing Dombrowski could do is persuade Ilitch to give her enough money to disappear for several years.

a little more to do with his struggles than say "doesn't have all that much". I believe JV is a bit of a Diva when it comes to his image and who he is associated with. Just my opinion. However, I do believe his competitive desire to be great if not the greatest precedes his narcissim. With a full off season to train like he wants I think we see a resurgent year from our former ace?

The National Academy of Sciences has done extensive research that proves a woman like Upton makes a man weak in the knees and weak in the head.
December 11th, 2014 at 12:06 PM ^
And the recovery time to full strength should be a year. That could explain Verlander losing some heat off his fastball and Miggy losing his power. Both seemed to improve near the end of the season. That, not Kate Upton, might be a better reason why he was not as good last year.
December 11th, 2014 at 12:46 PM ^
Just saying our starting rotation could have been JV (good or bad), Anibal (under contract) , Fister and Porcello (Cheaper than Greene and Price) , and Smyly (good or bad)
