Sam Webb on CC Timeline

Submitted by GVSUGoBlue on

Sam just said on WTKA that if the search extends past Christmas that we should assume that things with JH are going in a really positive direction. He does not expect that Hackett would wait for Harbaugh past Christmas if things were not progressing. 2.5 weeks until we get a clearer picture I guess.

As for JH and the 49er's firing him, there is no way the Niners would fire him unless he really did something bad between now and the end of the season. There is too much money involved.

I predict Michigan to make its serious push on Jimmy when the Niners are officially eliminated from playoff contention.

Sam was also advocating for Jim Mora if Harbaugh falls through.

I guess this thread can serve as the Monday Jim Harbaugh Thread.

their season is over.

1. If he is the type of person we think he is, he's not beaming out before the end of the season, because he is committed to his SF players and staff.

2. He won't accept a 'he quit on San Francisco' label that could be a detriment to returning to the NFL someday.

3. Assuming Hackett has reached out as reported, there is no way Hackett asked Harbaugh to quit SF before the season was over.

Jim Mora has expeditiously turned the football fortunes of UCLA around, with no drama or questionable tactics.  And he's beaten his arch rival...three years in a row.

Wouldn't mind that.

Sam only reports what the athletic department wants him to report.  Sounds like Harbaugh is option 1 and Mora is firmly established as the back-up plan, which I am 100% on board with.  he is a younger coach who seems to have the right mindset and energy for UM.

He also kept talking about the bus that drover over Brady Hoke when Brandon did his 1 a.m press release. But Sam just kisses the boots of the department. I wish more people would read/listen to what he says instead of reading a bastardized version put out by a random poster here and then take it as gospel.

I'd like to see a profile on Mora as I know very little about him. I know he's competitive in the PAC-12 though USC being down has to be helping. He'd be a good backup and I do think while HC is important if you don't have a very good coaching staff from S&C to position coaches to coordinators you may fail. He may be a good option but of course the staff is going to be paramount and that really goes for anybody.

but it's light years ahead of Oregon State. On top of that, UCLA is smack in the middle of one of the top 3 states for producing star HS talent; Oregon State is not.

In other words, there are tangible reasons why UCLA is a much more attractive place to be a head coach than Corvallis. Even Nebraska has a much higher profile in the college football world than Oregon St. does.

All that aside, I think Mora is just as much of a risk to jump back to the NFL as Harbaugh supposedly is. Aside from one season as a grad assistant at Washington, his entire coaching career was in the NFL prior to UCLA.

Can someone explain to me why Jim Mora Jr. is such a good candidate? I'm not trying to challenge, I'm geniunely curious. He looks okay on paper. Just that though: okay.

He had a bunch of average years in the NFL. One solid winning season and another bad one (5-11 in Seattle). At UCLA he's been rattling off 3-5 loss seasons. Don't we want a guy who is having 0-2 loss seasons?

Just my opinion.

Mora is currently 28-11 (.718) at UCLA. Before Mora got there they were 21-29 under Neuheisel (in 4 years) and it had been since 2005 that they had won more than 7 games. Mora won 9 in his first year (9-5, 10-3, 9-3).

UCLA isn't an easy place to win in recent years. The Athletic Department and facilities aren't great because the university doesn't tend to spend money on that sort of thing (which required high paying boosters to likely keep the BBall team afloat for a while before it went down hill as well), though in 2013 they approved some facility updates (not nearly at Michigan's level though). UCLA has been one of the youngest teams in college football they last couple years and Mora has drastically improved recruiting. I think his significant NFL ties are a huge advantage in recruiting, and would be a great way to differentiate himself from Meyer and Co. He runs a varied offensive scheme and has defenesive roots, making him a well rounded candidate.

I dunno, the guy has an 11-5 NFL season, and was above .500 in Atlanta. He was fired after one year in Seattle because Seattle wanted Pete so badly. But I think he has a great resume for a college coach, has some proven success at the NFL level to help him out, has good bloodlines and connections, and would be a great hire for Michigan. Being 53, he's probably old enough not to worry too much about leaving for the NFL again, but young enough where he could potentially be around for over a decade.

UCLA has some of the worst facilities in the Pac-12, and the AD and alumni are more focused on basketball than they are on football (though they haven't had much recent success in basketball, either). Rick Neuheisel publicly complained about UCLA's penny-pinching when he was fired. You would think it's an easy place to recruit and win, but it's not. What Mora has done there given the obstacles he's facing is pretty impressive.

Sam also said that Michigan hasn't reached out to Miles yet, which would seem to mean that he's no longer Option No. 2 if JH says no.

Other Sam tidbits, for what they're worth:

- Schiano really wants this job (duh), and is actively working to get it. I get the impression he's contacting Hackett every 20 minutes or so, sending him YouTube clips from Rutgers' one good year.

- Several other coaches who are currently coaching teams have also reached out to say they're interested. No names.

I think Shiano and NFL people are advocating Shiano to Michigan.

Schiano is a low-upside, high-baggage candidate. It makes no sense to go there. Even less sense than Addazio (which has all the trappings of my problems with Mullen with being a lesser coach).

I think Michigan will explore (candidates in no order) a lot of better options that are currently high-level HCs (Harbaughs, Mora, Stoops, Patterson) and a little more riskier options (Mullen, Graham, etc) and coordinators (both NFL and college) before looking at Shiano. Shiano goes against pretty much everything that was laid out for the committee.

I assume like others here that our AD knows whether Michigan has a reasonable chance at Harbaugh.  What scares me the most is if Hackett knows that Harbaugh isn't coming, and Hoke's replacement isn't named shortly, Michigan's best choices are probably not viable options.

Having said that, I think Michigan will be fine if the CC continues for a couple more weeks, so long as it doesn't become a rerun of what happened when Hoke was hired and there was no time to get recruits together. With the right coach and the right timing, we would still do well on national signing day.
