If Hoke is NOT let go right away will the non-Muggles try and save him?

Submitted by mGrowOld on

Assuming Hoke is not let go in the next 24 hours will the players and ex-players FINALLY acknowledge what us Muggles have known for quite some time - that Hoke is not the answer as HC?  Given that all season we have been told by players and ex-players just how insanely awesome Hoke is and that he just needs a bit more time to turn things around I'm wondering if any of them will break ranks and call for the dismissal of their good friend Brady Hoke.

My fear remains that those with influence inside the Athletic Department will continue to lobby for Hoke to be retained to preserve their buddy's career in spite of his horrendous and declining record.  And like it or not they have access to Hackett that we do not enjoy so right or wrong their voice campaigning loudly to save their buddy will be heard while ours is not.

You are being way too presumptuous...

I would assume there are a large number of ex-players who are more than fed up with the losing. They are the ones who gave more than any fan and created the winning legacy so they have to be suffering more than you or I...

So, yeah there have been a few vocal Hoke supporters....that doesn't make it the majority. I just look at that as a sign that those who are pissed are making their feelings known through other channels and that may just be out of respect for Hoke.

All will be known real soon...but I just can't see anyone mounting a legit case for keeping Hoke and risk further damage to the program.

people will lobby for him. Many people like him and rightfully so. However, I think they like Hoke the man and aren't thinking if Hoke the HC at MICHIGAN. As far as recruiting there are no kids that are going to come play for him. He's done. Yet, people & players will lobby for him. A "meh" hire may even see transfers due to it. Yet, he has to go if for no other reason than he was given 4 years of full support and he fielded worse teams every year. Year one was fine but you could see some issues. I give a pass on year two as 4 of our 5 losses were to top 5 teams, IIRC. The real downfall was '13. We could have easily been a 4 win team that year. This year was just as bad. He always got them up for osu but only once enough to finish them. He got msu once, by 2. He was even against nd and won his first in a game that took a miracle couple plays. It's obvious he's not the guy. He's a good man & I wish him well. I don't dislike HIM, I dislike the HC "him".

The non muggles are emotionally attached because hoke gives them cookies and milk the night before games and rustles up their hair in the morning while they are still in their pajamas. The team is so soft compared to even Minnesota that it is a disgrace. If Marcus Ray, meaner and the other non muggles can still pitch for jokes job then they are just too damned sensitive and don't want accountability or greatness at Michigan ever again.

Even Brian Griese was saying changes should be made during the last minute. He then did the whole "he's a great, great. man" line they have all said. But he was pretty clear that 5-7 isn't good enough.

I think the non-muggles (I was an athelete a Mich, not a football player, so I guess I am a muggle) are finally not willing to hide their eyes anymore. The rumblings from the football players I do know are without inside knowledge, but they're not cool with the results anymore in private. They will never say it out loud, but privately, they're not happy. I just hope Hackett, a former player, is just as unhappy as everyone else...judging by his "playing candy crush and giggle face" during the last two minutes, I am not optimistic. Seriously, I don't understand why this is even up for debate inside the admin right now (but seriously, there is a lot of momentum behind the "let's keep him" camp). It worries me.

Yea, Hoke's gone. Whatever. Today, next week or next month. I would love to see an AD now! What HC worth his salt will grab the job without knowing who he'll work for? We need back-to-back home runs. First an AD hire then a HC hire which is looking more and more slim (not putting all eggs in the Harbaugh basket).

Hoke is gone. But I would not encourage anyone to freak out if it doesn't happen this week. There could be things happening behind closed doors with CC, and things could work out better if Hoke is retained through December.

Obviously we all want JH, but that won't happen until January if it does happen. Mich also owes Hoke less money if we wait until Jan. There are no good coaches who will be available before January.

Uh, from where?  Do you have any actual inside information or are you just guessing out of fear?

Perhaps but the arguments to keep him are what? He needs to coach his first full senior class. More time to develop a QB for his type of system? Maybe someone else can elaborate why keep him? Let's hear it...I'm all ears.

To be fair, it is a very young team.

To be equally fair, the youth card might be appropriate as an excuse for 8-4 or 9-3 with the talent he has on hand.

It really isn't going to matter, however. Hoke's gone. It's just a question of whether they want to save the million bucks by waiting.

Its a Huge money losing proposition to keep him...so he's got to go.

And this will be abundantly clear to a Corporate guy right...if nothing else he's got to understand the damage retaining Hoke would do to the balance sheet.

So, I just don't see how anyone could think its a good idea to keep him..

could be (fingers crossed) that he's aware that he doesn't know what he's doing but also knows he will be successful if he simply hires Harbaugh.

"Hmmnnn, let's see. I can work really hard if I keep Hoke, or I can take the credit and get back to eating donuts if I just hire Harbaugh."

It's a huge money thing to pay him $3MM to sit on his couch at home as well while we pay a new coach $5MM. Much more than the difference in gate receipts--which won't be that much with a strong home schedule. Attendance will not suffer or be much worse than this year, if even at all.

Keeping Hoke would trash the 2016 recruiting class as well, placing the program in a deep hole.

It took 20-30 years to generate the once-legendary wait list for season tickets.  It's taken about seven to see crowds falling under 100K.

Once fans perceive that they can pick and choose games and simply pay up for the games they want to go to, many will.  The bad news is that the negative momentum is a serious risk to the $85 million annual football revenue stream.  (About half is comprised of gate receipts.)  The good news is that there is an obvious antidote to the problem.

It's as much an intuitive calculation as a spreadsheet thing--since Michigan hasn't been in this situation for a LONG time--but letting your "product" wither is rarely a good thing for the long term  Net Present Value of the going concern.

And my guess is that we're going to twist in the wind until Dec 31 waiting for a decision to be made.  Here's why....

1.  This is a small recruiting class.  The new coach can pick up 3-5 commits in the final month, especially if the new coach is Harbaugh.

2.  If Harbaugh really is a possibility, he won't leave until SF's season is over - which is Dec 28 at the earliest.  SF is on the cusp of the playoffs, so it could be longer.

3.  Hoke's buyout drops from $3m to $2m on Jan 1.  If they pay him an EXTRA $1m under these circumstances, it's just horrible financial management.

4.  There is nothing going on the with program now.  The players study for exams without practices, the coaches have no games to prep, and the recruiting coordinator will continue to sell the school.

I don't see anything happening until January.  I'm not sure that's a bad thing, given 1-4, above, but we'll all be understandably nervous as hell.

on a forward contract and not announce it to the public?  (Michigan is a public institution.)

I believe the 49ers have an option on Harbaugh for 2015, so maybe you make the forward contract for 2016 and beyond and just add the 2015 year when the 49ers and Harbaugh part ways later this season.

3-5 seasons in the B1G, no one this planet can make a convincing case to keep Hoke.  And they shouldn't even try.

The simple fact is the stadium has to be full on home game Saturdays and it hasn't been since Minnesota.

The most painful stat of the day came early on.  OSU led the nation in attendance avg 108,000+.  That FACT say all you need to know about Hoke's future.

They call it the Big House for a reason.  If they didn't want it filled every week, they'd call it the "Big Hole".   Hoke's done no matter what.
