Hey, JB!  I'm getting a…

Hey, JB!  I'm getting a place near Malaga next year.  Maybe we can share best internet and streaming practices in the Spanish market.  No sense in reinventing this wheel if you already have it figured out.  Thanks!

I agree with you and…

I agree with you and Carpetbagger, below.

While at the game, my first thought was "this is the dumbest game I've attended" since the 2000 Northwestern game (when A Thomas fumbled, untouched, in the open field with less than 2 minutes to go, to give NW a short field to score and win 54-51.  By the way, NW wears purple.  Jinx?)

Later, I thought I might have mistakenly attended an adaptation of Bill S' "The Comedy of Errors"; produced and directed by J Harbaugh; starring S Moore, M Weiss, and J Minter; with JJ McCarthy playing the role of all four twins.

This game is entirely on the coaches, in my mind.  McCarthy's two picks are on him and the screwed up calls are (sadly) to be expected.  Still, those mistakes could have been easily overcome with a competent coaching job.

The Philly Special was insane.  Kick it or use McCarthy's legs - like you did at OSU.

The Wilson call was horrible, but it was still a 1st down inside the one.  Go under center, sneak it, and try to push him in.  Otherwise, start running your best 2pt plays from the gun.  Going under center to try to execute a quick hand off to a brand new running back?  Dumb.

Beyond that, running Cover Zero and blitzing are OSU-level mistakes (see 45-23).  Not activating McCarthy runs until late Q3?  Foolish.  Inside zone into crashing LBs and Safeties?  Dumb.  Etc., etc.

This game was there to be taken - but TCU took advantage of some of the worst bowl preparation I've seen since 1970 - and that's saying something.  It's a sad, sad thing because these opportunities don't come around very often.

Tied everything up in New Tampa late this afternoon, then drove to Stuart.  Steady but light rain on the road to Stuart, no wind, but a few traffic backups near something called "Yeehaw Junction".  (I'm not at all happy with the GPS system!).  Stuart, WPB area having multiple tornado warnings now.  TV says a few may have touched down.  Staying the night before a (scheduled) flight from MIA to Europe tomorrow morning.  Hope I make it out!!

I thought that situations…

I thought that situations like this is why student athletes go to class (and move to medical scholarships).  Damn I'm getting old.

Alex.....this is the ghost of your junior high grammar teacher speaking.  I died trying to correct all of those papers written by the urchin class (this is /s just in case it's not obvious - no one really died).

What are we going to try to do?

I get that we're going to try TO dig a little deeper, but it looks like we're going to do two things here: (1) try; AND (2) dig a little deeper.  I just don't get what we're going to do before we dig a little deeper.  Can you help?

[This is just a little grammar police note about one of my personal pet peeves.  It doesn't need to be taken seriously by anyone.]

My experience has been that…

My experience has been that hyperbole is fun, but is seldom a friend.

I'm all in on "problematic", but if one thinks this is "deeply troubling" my guess it that that person doesn't get around much.

This might be a better example of "deeply troubling" than the Pearson situation

I don't think the OP said this is the "correct one".

Here's what the OP said:

"And so it goes on. And the 99% of us who have no qualifications to weigh in on the science are stuck trying to fathom public policy that is perpetually going in contradictory directions."

Who knows?

My personal best guess is to try to listen to everyone and sort it out yourself the best you can.  Confirmation bias is a bad thing.  Keep listening, try to figure out why they have different opinions and do what works for you.

My kids aren't playing D-1 football and don't have NFL potential.  I don't know what I'd do in that situation, but I would want to listen to all sides as I attempted to understand the risk.  And I sure as hell wouldn't be quick to condemn someone else if their risk analysis came out different than mine.

Let's see if I got this.......

Over thirty professionals from esteemed organizations around the world - immunologists, biostatisticians, epidemiologists, pediatricians, psychiatrists, mathematicians, microbiologists - have gone public with their best recommendation at this moment about how to handle this specific pandemic and YOU say it's "bullshit propaganda".

Any chance that might be because (a) it's easier to manage and shelter a group of 250, than thousands of individuals; (b) Marco is currently expected to brush Baton Rouge with <40mph winds and the threat has been decreasing; and (c) Laura isn't yet a hurricane, shouldn't arrive until Wed-Thurs (so there's time to take action), and is currently forecast to arrive with 25-35mph winds?

I just don't yet get the feeling that "lives are in danger", to quote Colonel Jessup.

Not good, but likely not a career-ending condition.  Let's give it some time.  Hope it works out for the best for him.

I don't understand why it's…

I don't understand why it's a misleading stat.  Can you help? Is it because we don't know the long term effects of an infection?  Hypothetically speaking, if no one died from the virus and there were no long term effects, why would we care about the virus?

The virus will kill some people, so it seems to me that case fatalities is an important stat.

If there are long term effects (who knows so far?), then I can imagine other stats might be more important in the long run.

Honest question for the…

Honest question for the board, no politics.

What does the infection fatality rate (IFR) need to be (in your mind) before COVID just becomes background noise?

My guess is that the floor would be the CDC's IFR estimate for the flu (which I think is 0.1%).  And the ceiling would be below the CDC's current COVID estimate of 0.65%.

My question isn't about how or when we get there, just how low does it have to go before we can comfortably say "screw it, let's get on with our lives".

Thanks!

I think that's right.

If I…

I think that's right.

If I understand the CDC data correctly, it does not support a hypothesis that Florida and Alabama are underreporting.

I don't think so.

I think…

I don't think so.

I think it means that the CDC believes that Michigan has experienced between 5600 and 6800 more deaths from all causes than it would have expected over the Feb 1 - May 27 period.  Michigan has reported ~5300 COVID deaths during that time.

If my understanding is correct, it implies that (a) there may be some undercounting of COVID deaths in Michigan, or (b) there are other, non-COVID, causes of death that are increasing as well, or some combination of same.

I'm not sure that's the…

I'm not sure that's the right story in Florida:

https://www.tampabay.com/news/health/2020/05/19/florida-health-department-officials-told-manager-to-delete-coronavirus-data-before-reassigning-her-emails-show/

It seems that the employee in question was a data manager, not a "public health expert".  If I understand the article correctly (and I'm not 100% sure that I do), there was some confusion in the data regarding patient reporting about when symptoms started v when the state confirmed the case (because someone apparently reported symptoms as early as Jan 1).  The actual public health expert, Dr. Blackmore, apparently told everyone to make sure the data matches and stop reporting inconsistent data.  The problem seems to have been about timing, rather than undercounting or overcounting.

Does this help the…

Does this help the discussion?

https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nvss/vsrr/covid19/excess_deaths.htm

Feb 1 - May 27 2020:

Florida predicted excess deaths, all causes (including COVID), between 528 and 2212.

Alabama predicted excess deaths, all causes (including COVID), between 116 and 534.

Michigan predicted excess deaths, all causes (including COVID), between 5602 and 6802

CDC claims to have adjusted these numbers for underreporting.

Here's a quick April 13…

Here's a quick April 13 update for Michigan (#3 in the US in terms of deaths) at the apparent height of the pandemic:

Total deceased = 1602

Median age = 75

% deceased under 50 = < 7%  (< 112)

Total labor force = ~ 4.5 million

1st time unemployment claims since March 15 = ~ 820k

Total projected deaths (IHME) = 2373

Total projected deaths by May 1 (IHME) = 2363

Total COVID-19 inpatients in MI = 3986

Total COVID-19 critical care inpatients in MI = 1570

Total hospital beds in MI = 23467

Total / Available vents in MI = 3223 / 1657

Total gloves available = 27.6mm

Total surgical masks available = 3.2mm

Total N95 masks available = 880k

Total face shields available = 423k

Total % of MI cases in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb counties:  78.5% (20.1k/25.6k)

Quick summary:

(1) We have beds, vents, and PPE available today. (No idea about meds for vents, etc.).

(2) > 50% deaths over age 70 and presumably out of the workforce.

(3) > 820k newly unemployed with < 112 deaths in prime workforce age (< age 50)

If it's up to you, what are you going to do about the lockdown?

I had been to the cemetery…

I had been to the cemetery at St Laurent sur Mer twice before Saving Private Ryan came out.  On both those occasions, I saw veterans visiting with their families.  One particular family was consoling their veteran father/grandfather as he sat on a bench and sobbed.  I will never forget it.  For me, I have never had a film scene move me the way that final scene in SPR does.  I cannot watch it (or even think about it) without sobbing myself.  Nothing even comes close.

I'd like to refer everyone…

I'd like to refer everyone to an organization in Seattle, the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IMHE) at healthdata.org.  They seem like a real organization - apparently somehow affiliated with the Univ of Washington and funded by Gates and the State of Washington.

They've prepared models on a state-by-state basis which address best-case, worst-case, and most likely scenarios for resource usage (covid19.healthdata.org).  The Michigan model shows that we ran out of ICU beds last Wednesday (March 25); that we'll run out of beds available tomorrow (March 30); and that we'll need about 1,800 ventilators (it doesn't say how many we have).  It doesn't address the granular problem of having a bed, ICU bed, or ventilator in Grand Rapids when you need it in Warren.

The interesting thing (to me) is that the model seems to show that the peak (here in Michigan) should be April 8, that we should have things under control by the week of April 20, and that we should be out of the woods by the end of the month.  Buckle up for the next three weeks or so, but (to the extent the model is accurate) the end seems to be in sight.

On another, anecdotal note, my daughter and son-in-law live in NYC.  They were very sick in early March - reporting symptoms that were more severe than they remember from other illnesses (they're only 30, so they don't have deep experience in this regard).  They were not tested and, if it was COVID-19, they are not included in any statistic.  They believe they got it from some friends in DC who underwent a similar, serious respiratory event.  The DC folks tested negative for flu, but weren't tested for COVID-19.  Everyone seems to be fine now - so that's a scary step in the right direction.

1974 NCAA Regional SemiFinal…

1974 NCAA Regional SemiFinal v #3 Notre Dame:  M 77 ND 68

#3 ND with Digger Phelps was looking forward to a re-match with Marquette for a chance at a Final Four berth.  He forgot about Michigan.

Campy (not Cazzie) Russell laid 36 on an Irish team that included John Shumate, Gary Brokaw, and Adrian Dantley.  Shumate put up 34.  If the 3pt shot was in effect, I think Russell would have put up 46 and Michigan would have won by 19.

Shumate ended up 1st All-American, with Bill Walton, Jamaal Wilkes, David Thompson, and the inimitable Marvin Barnes.  Campy made the second team.

UM lost the regional final in a heart breaker to Marquette, 72-70, but watching Campy destroy the Irish was one of the highlights of my youth.

I think that's exactly right…

I think that's exactly right, Bez.  Loeffler did use the tape as a resume builder, and Brady did his friend and teammate a solid by saying nice things about him - but I think it's quite a leap to say that the 23 year old kid played a significant role in the development of the 21 year old kid.  Especially since Loeffler hasn't come within a country mile of that "success" since.

You do understand that Brady…

You do understand that Brady arrived in 1995 (redshirt) then played in 1996, 1997, 1998, and 1999, right?  Loeffler was a teammate in 1995, a student assistant in 1996 and 1997, then a graduate assistant in 1998 and 1999.  So, we giving a "big piece" of the credit to a teammate, student assistant, and graduate assistant instead of, say, the actual coaching staff?  OK, but it sure doesn't pass the smell test for me........

1968:  USC v Indiana.  OJ, Earl McCullough for USC; Isenbarger for IU

1977:  USC, the Phantom Touchdown

1983:  UCLA, we needed a QB

1989:  USC, my first RB win in person

1992:  Washington, overwhelmed by their D

1998:  Washington State, 12-0

2004:  USC, game with my daughter - 1968 full circle

2005:  Texas, great game - go for it!

I guess that's 8.  Let's do 9 for a NC

Favorite memory was 1998.  At the end of the game, my 6yr daughter looked at me, then turned to her mother in astonishment - "Look Mommy, Daddy's crying!"

Yes.  I'll be there at the next one.  You should take advantage of the opportunity when it's there.

No.  Michigan Stadium, the Rose Bowl, and nothing else.

Lessons Learned.......

First, if tl;dr is your style, grab a beer and skip this, you're unlikely to get anything from it and it's probably best for all involved anyway.

Second, if your goal is to get the best possible seats at the lowest possible price, pay attention to Seth and his advice.  I've been around for a long time and his advice on ticket acquistion is, in my experience, spot on.

Third, I'd like to introduce a topic that's been absent from this series of posts.....ticket buying ethics.  Ethics???  In ticket buying???  That's crazy, you say, and you are probably right.  I'll push ahead anyway, just in case.

There was a hue and a cry on this board post-OSU about the disgusting sea of red in the stadium on Nov 28 and all of the not true fans, traitors, idiots, profiteers, *ssh*les, etc. who sold their tickets to buckeyes.  My guess is that there were between 10k and 15k there, and at least half of those were sold by U-M itself.  It was ugly, to be sure, but it wasn't nearly as ugly as it has been in the past - and I've been going to The Game for over 40 years.

So here's my story:  In mid-October (post-MSU) it was becoming clear that I might have 8 extra tickets for the OSU game - scheduling problems for my daughters (both U-M alums) and my brother (an airline pilot) were popping up.  I was faced with a choice:  sell the tickets on StubHub (or the like) at $300-$400 each (the tickets were in Secs 44, 1, 2 and between rows 25 and 75) and take a chance that a buckeye would buy them; or hope that the scheduling problems would clear up - or that I'd find other friends who wanted to go.

Well, I'll be damned if I was going to be responsible for buckeyes getting into that stadium.  Don't get me wrong, $2,400+ still goes far enough that I could put it to good use, but I have a policy:  just say "no" to buckeyes.

As the game approached, the schedules didn't clear up, but I was able to give tickets to three father-son combinations - all of which were U-M fans and two of whom had never been to a game.  Progress, to be sure.

I walked, past all the scalpers (who might sell to buckeyes), down State St and up Hoover with 2 extras in hand, keeping an eye out for that father/child who might be in need.  When I got to Greene I found two mid-30s U-M fans, appropriately decked out in their gear, looking for tickets.  I approached and asked what they'd offer for 2 on the 40, high.  The response was "we've only budgeted $100 each" (face was $115).

Frankly, I was insulted.  I was insulted because these guys were trying to take advantage of the situation to get in for the lowest possible price.  I realized then that they were only following Seth's advice - get close to the stadium, wait until just before the game, and look for that old alum who just wants to get to his seats.  I realized then that I was that "old alum" and that Seth was exactly right.  I realized then that I was a sap.

Now, I don't care about the $30.  If I cared about the money, I would have sold the tickets for $2,400+ when my relatives couldn't attend.  I gave 6 of the tickets away as it was.  I have no problem negotiating your best deal with the scalpers.  What I do care about is two U-M fans who weren't willing to negotiate with scalpers were willing to let me subsidize their afternoon in the interest of getting "the best deal".  Congrats guys, you got it done.

So here's my question:  Is there, or should there be, some kind of principle here?  If you've made it to the stadium, should you be willing to pay face when you buy from another U-M fan or should you negotiate your best deal - just like you would with a scalper?

If the answer is "face", then maybe Seth should remind people about that in these posts.

If the answer is "best deal", then you've helped me re-learn a lesson that I learned long ago - money talks and bullshit walks.  And that means if buckeyes are willing to pay more to get into our stadium that U-M fans are, then the market has spoken and we've reached the right result.  And everyone on this board who didn't pay market or above on StubHub to get into The Game has lost their complainin' privileges when it comes to that ugly sea of red.

Neg away!!!

I'm down with that.

In the cycle of life.....

...my first daughter was born the day of that Maryland game.  She and her younger sister attended dozens of games in that stadium over the years, became students, and graduated with Michigan degrees.  Today, they both bleed blue as your father did.  The torch was passed.

I agree with this ^^^^

Having possession and reaching for the goalline should count as a football move.

To the extent one agrees, this is actually worse than the Lions call because (1) the Cowboys were inside the one, and (2) the Cowboys never got the ball back.

I guess I'll just shake my head..

...and crawl back to the rock I've been living under.

Wow!

You're right, I'm shocked by those comments.  Are they from Michigan fans or just casual observers?

I guess I can understand the attitude comment.  I think he has exactly the attitude we need, but tomato - tomAHto, etc.  On the other hand, his record demonstrates that he is as good as everyone thinks.  Tough to argue there.  I'm all for contrarianism, but not just to be fashionable.

I was comparing RR's record ....

...to Harbaugh's at Stanford.  Here's what I found.

RR's record at U-M: 3-9; 5-7; 7-6

Hoke inherited that team and went 11-2 the next year.

JH's record at Stanford:  4-8; 5-7; 8-5; 12-1

I wondered whether Harbaugh was "awful" at Stanford.  Two games is a mighty thin line between "awful" and Harbaugh's first three years at Stanford.

Then I realized how lucky we are that Dave Brandon or someone of his ilk wasn't at Stanford.  No 4th year in Palo Alto means no 49ers job, etc. - then who knows whether JH even shows up on anyone's radar today.

What???

Hoke learned what from Bo?  The "Team 136" thing?  Why would you say that?

With all due respect...

...it might be easier to ask if there is a Michigan fan, alum, player, former player, etc. in this galaxy who isn't 100% behind this hire.

I get that MSU and OSU fans are looking for ways to belittle these events, and that Auburn and Georgia fans don't care, but I can't imagine a single Michigan person - whether they were in the RR camp, the Brady camp, somewhere in-between, or in no camp at all - that isn't all in on this one.

It's great....

...and much more appropriate, but it's damn tough to beat "aware, but not fully aware.  That was priceless.

I don't think we have enough information......

It looks like the 300 FSU reports were spread over at least 3 years.  Given that 360 names were searched, and given that they were all football players (and I don't know that they were), it could spread over as many as 10-14 years.

At 3 years, that's 100 reports per year where someone was MENTIONED in a report - as a potential perp, or as a witness, etc.  At 10 years, that's only 30 reports per year, etc.

If you told me that a Michigan football player was mentioned up to 30 times per year in an A2 police report, I wouldn't be surprised and I wouldn't necessarily think something is horribly wrong.

I think the TPD reports need a lot of parsing before we reach any conclusions here.

I agree, but....

...didn't we think the same thing about Brandon back in the day?  (Not an attack, just a question.)

Are we forgetting...

...that Hoke doesn't have any sustained track record of success, anywhere?

Pitt should take an upcoming coordinator and give him a shot.  At least they could live with the hope.

Yeah....

....Sheridan and Threet.  You must be right.  /s (just in case it's not obvious)

...and soon to be

...fully aware.

42 to OSU...

...not once, but twice!

To be fair...

Solomon is a redshirt freshman.  He is a first-year QB.  Next year, Solomon will be the first second year QB that RR has played since Pat White in 2007.

Oooh....

...too bad.  That's sounds too much like my ex-wife to make this thing work.  :-)
