Maybe he can get hired as Devin Funchess's personal tutor.

Great idea as Lord knows he needs it, but I would bet he would drop him also....
But we all know drops and catches are just a statistic.

Add a harmonica, and it would have sounded like some prime Bob Dylan.
Really.
Well, maybe not, but I did thoroughly enjoy it.

But I guess Miles Austin is pretty much the same kind of player.

maybe he wasn't getting open enough, but he didn't sway from his 100% reliable ways whenever thrown to.

and said things everyone here was thinking. He challenged the authority of the coach and management and was released. His agent said it all. He deserves much better than what the Panther coaches and front office are delivering. Everyone on that team does. Lots of pissed off Panther fans down here right now and rightfully so.

after pounding the lions, you guys fell off and then some. the o-line thinks pass blocking is optional. cam is having gardneresque ptsd, the defense is hemorrhaging points. i'm just glad that benjamin keeps finding the endzone for my tantasy squad.

get dismantled a couple of weeks ago. I thought I was watching a rerun of a 2013 Michigan game with Cam Newton doing an impressive impersonation of Devin Gardner trying to survive.

I'm not a fan of the Jets at all but he'd be a perfect fit there, they desperately need a possession receiver, and even moreso a class act.
November 18th, 2014 at 3:07 PM ^
I wonder if the Patriots would look at bringing him in. Their WR corps still isn't great, and they could have Avant for minimum salary (as a veteran who was on the Panthers' roster at the beginning of the season, his season salary from the Panthers is guaranteed).
November 18th, 2014 at 3:18 PM ^
should mess with what's been working.
although, on the other side, it looked like the steelers offense had it allllll figured out until they returned to reality the last couple of weeks.
November 18th, 2014 at 4:31 PM ^
I hate the Steelers, but they could use a nice possession receiever. They like to throw the deep ball to Bryant and throw short routes to Brown, which has been very effective, but I think they need a guy who can keep the chains moving without having to throw the ball 30+ yards down field.

I was actually reading the NBC SPorts article, and funnily enough, the Eagles fans are flooding the comments section wanting Avant back, but then you can see why - good possession receiver, playmaker to the point of needing only one hand on occasion, and a pretty level-headed guy. It's the Panthers' loss, in my opinion.

"a pretty level-headed guy" - is this a nice way of saying he doesn't scream inappropriate things at Kenny Chesney concerts?

impact in the Panther passing game but that really isn't his fault. And this move seems more like one to shake up the team than anything else. Cam Newton is one of the least accurate passers in the NFL. This team was a defensive juggernaut. But the team scattered its secondary players, let go all of its receivers from last year and is now starting an Oline comprised of four undrafted guys and an an all-pro at center.
Basically, the GM ruined this club iby not drafting any Oline players and then watched an all-pro guard retire without a decent backup. And then, he cut the team's all-time leading pass catcher because he didn't like his lockerroom attitude, which is precisely why Avant was signed to replace Steve Smith.
Nothing on Jason, who isn't Smith, either in attitude or speed or overall production, but his signing was a message and so apparently is his release from the team. But the only real message is how fucked up the GM has made this team this year.

Panthers fan here and you are so correct. I don't think most people understand how much talent walked out the door after last season. Basically they just added Benjamin and a bunch of scrubs.
I was never a big fan of Cam and you are correct about him not being that accurate, but behind this line he is screwed. I think they should shut him down before he gets broken physically and/or mentally.

drop percentage to record low levels - as long as Stafford avoids his TEs and doesn't throw it directly at Megatron.

He should come to Detroit and flail at overthrown and inaccurate passes from Stafford.

and another RB and a middle linebacker, and a safety. Holy Shit the Lions need help. They are hanging on by a thread.
November 18th, 2014 at 7:37 PM ^
Lions need help at RB, OL, DT to replace either Suh or Fairley and CB to eventually take over Mathis. They are fine at DE, LB and S on defense.

I love that Jason Avant basically became in the NFL exactly what he was in college. It's very rare to see offensive skill players do that.
November 18th, 2014 at 4:58 PM ^
Jason Avant needs to be picked up by the Lions. This needs to happen now. Get on it Mayhew.
November 18th, 2014 at 5:44 PM ^
completely agree. Perfect fits for him are opponents this weekend. Lions and Pats.

that Avant is rarely mentioned as one of Michigan's all-time best wide receivers.
Maybe he wasn't spectacular in the same way that AC, Desmond, and Braylon were, but I would definitely put Jason on my list of best Michigan receivers of the last 50 years, roughly what I consider the modern era of college football.
Here's where I would rank Avant in my quickly thrown-together personal favorite 10 receivers since the mid-60's:
1) Anthony Carter
2) Desmond Howard
3) Amani Toomer
4) Braylon Edwards
5) Derrick Alexander
6) Jason Avant
7) David Terrell
8) Mario Manningham
9) Jim Smith
10) John Kolesar
I know, I know, I left off a lot of talented and productive receivers, such as Marquis Walker, Jeremy Gallon, Mercury Hayes, Junior Hemingway, Adrian Arrington, and Tai Streets. But t chose those 10 not just based on stats, but also on the basis of passing my "eye test" in the context of what kind of offense Michigan was playing during their careers. For instance, neither Jim Smith nor John Kolesar had the stats of some of those I left off, but both also suffered statistically from the fact that Bo simply didn't emphasize the passing game during their careers.

Love Jason Avant. Literally catches everything within his radius. Except he doesn't catch colds...he's ammune to mere mortal illnesses.
