07/29/2015 - 3:20pm I think it depends on a lot

I think it depends on a lot of things, most of which have been mentioned already in the thread.  One thing that I don't think was mentioned was the culture in your town.  I live/coach in a "football town", they want their team to be great.  We have parents that make their kids play football (against the wishes of the coaches, we understand football isn't for everyone).  I've had kids with concussions who's parents demand that they play, even though they haven't been cleared.  I pulled a kid once because he took a hit to the head and wouldn't put him back in.  His parents threatened to get me fired.

We just moved our fourth and fifth graders away from full contact to padded flag.  The parents flipped out.  I'm talking threatened to sell their homes and move to a different town flipped out.

Our numbers are very good and getting better, but sometimes I just shake my head.

05/02/2015 - 10:12pm Antics?

Like beating a woman to the point she needed to be taken away on a stretcher?

In my mind he's not an "American", he's a piece of shit.

As an OC that runs the flexbone triple option, who has one of his playbooks and has read the ones online, I'm sure you know more about this than me.

04/26/2015 - 4:04pm They gave up over 300 yards

They gave up over 300 yards of offense.  VT sold out to stop the run and get after a young QB and it worked well for them, but saying they took Urbz lunch money is a bit much.  Getting your lunch money stolen is rushing for -27 yards.  Is it so hard to beleive that Urban Meyer is a good coach and even a good coach with an inexperienced team can lose a game?

04/26/2015 - 3:37pm A)  That was exactly my

A)  That was exactly my point, Feldman calling it a "secret" is dumb.  You can give Foster credit for implementing it all you want, but he didn't create anything.

B)  Then why does GT lead the country in rushing all the time?  Paul Johnson sells DVDs on how to install his offense.  His play books are online.  There are even youtube videos of him explaining his offense.  Every defensive coordinator in the country knows exactly what they are doing.  Must be all those five star recruits.

04/26/2015 - 1:46pm Secret defense?

This is pure clickbait by Feldman.  Since when is a bear front a secret?  Foster didn't even come up with the idea himself, he stole it from Ole Miss.  Having read the actual case reports on X and O labs, it seems to me they got lucky that Barret didn't have a good game and that OSU's offense as a whole was inexperienced.  If they run this defense next year against OSU, I predict a lot of pain for VT.

It's a pretty standard way to perform a shotgun snap.  If done properly the QB will catch the ball with his hand on the laces.

It would slide out of place opening the fridge.

03/18/2015 - 8:48pm I tore my ACL playing

I tore my ACL playing football, tried to play and tore up my meniscus pretty bad.  Doctor said I would need my knee replaced sometime around 40.  Have dislocated both shoulders multiple times.  I had surgery on the right one to repair a 270 degree labral tear, doc said it was the most stitches he had ever put in a shoulder.  The shoulder surgery was, in my opinion way worse as far as pain and length of recovery.  Which is why the left one isn't getting fixed unless I have too.

What do you know about coaching?

01/04/2015 - 7:01pm I love these quotes about

I love these quotes about incoming freshmen and how they don't go in the weight room the first three weeks.

"Somebody is going to break; it’s inevitable.”

"The stress of having to compete when they’re already fatigued is almost emotionally traumatic."

Winter conditioning should be fun.

01/03/2015 - 8:04pm What?

You mean to tell me that you can exchange your points for stuff?  I've been doing this wrong.

01/03/2015 - 3:24pm Not according to the depth

Not according to the depth chart...

Pettway does not start.  Jarran Reed does, all 315 lbs of him.

01/03/2015 - 3:11pm Taco could be 284 by next

Taco could be 284 by next season and Poggi could be 280 by next season.  You combine that with the other guys and that is a damn good two deep, which you have to have.

So if your theory is that you need huge guys to beat OSU, would you care to explain to me why Bama just got run over for 280+ yards?

01/03/2015 - 1:15pm Yes.

Wisconsin does run a 3-4.

12/30/2014 - 9:05pm I've never had a problem with

I've never had a problem with my guys focusing on the sideline.

What do you consider a complicated adjustment?  If I am making major adjustments, that means we were not prepared.

We will use halftime to go over and refine any adjustments made.

12/30/2014 - 8:55pm Homemade or instant?

Homemade or instant?

12/30/2014 - 8:49pm Why wait?

Why would you wait to make adjustments?  If you are a good coach, you are always making little adjustments based on what the other team is doing.

In college and pro's it is really easy.  You have your entire unit on the sideline and are talking to them about what is going on and what you need to fix.  Every coach is wearing a headset, so communication between coaches is extremly easy.

Also, as mentioned, talent and depth are a big deal.  If your DT's are getting destroyed, there is only so much you can do.

11/30/2014 - 10:15pm The OP said "he might not

The OP said "he might not have done this because of football related concussions?"

I was simply providing some information on the fact that this is a very real problem outside of sports.

11/30/2014 - 9:59pm Suicide is the 10th leading

Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the US., causing over 40,000 deaths in 2012.  Every 13 minutes someone is committing suicide.  Suicide and depression are a problem everywhere, not just football, hockey or wrestling.

This is not basketball.  He had to slow it down, because they went up tempo and we were not prepared for it.  Hoke is entirely to blame for it, it is his job to make sure they are prepared.

11/22/2014 - 9:17pm Serious Question

Do we know for sure that Nuss had a blank check?  I just have this weird feeling that Nuss is being hindered by what Hoke thinks Michigan football should look like.

11/22/2014 - 8:35pm Interesting couple of post.

Interesting couple of post.  Starts off with saying "fuck him" about a 17-18 year old making a choice about where he will play football and ends with "You're only as good as you're word".

What do your words say about you?

11/22/2014 - 6:03pm Players don't like

Players don't like conditioning, so Hoke doesn't make them do it.  Remember he's a nice guy, players coach.

He had a good week of practice.

11/18/2014 - 7:01pm Panthers fan here and you are

Panthers fan here and you are so correct.  I don't think most people understand how much talent walked out the door after last season.  Basically they just added Benjamin and a bunch of scrubs.

I was never a big fan of Cam and you are correct about him not being that accurate, but behind this line he is screwed.  I think they should shut him down before he gets broken physically and/or mentally.

10/26/2014 - 12:15pm I am a Panthers fan and I

I am a Panthers fan and I agree.  He had no idea how to use Cam.  I was thrilled when he got the Browns job.

09/27/2014 - 9:09pm I could be wrong, but I

I could be wrong, but I believe that Bellomy signals in plays.  He doesn't carry around his helmet and he can't just run off to get it.  Someone has to understand the situation and make sure he gets it.  Who is in charge of that I don't know.

Their offense has no excuse, I agree.  You have to admit that they have very little depth on the dline.

08/31/2014 - 12:09am Not really.  Depth is always

Not really.  Depth is always important and Wisconsin has lost two of their three starting d-linemen.

08/31/2014 - 12:01am Kind of agree.  However, I

Kind of agree.  However, I think what you are seeing are the benefits of oversigning.

08/17/2014 - 1:29pm Football isn't hard?

You seem to be forgetting that the defense isn't going to just let you engage them and drive them off the line.  Saban makes things easy?  Obviously you don't know much about his defense.

08/17/2014 - 1:18pm I'm not sure who taught you

I'm not sure who taught you how to punch, but if it is identical to your bench press motion you're doing it wrong.

Bench is over rated, period.  Squats and cleans are where you make a living as an OL (actually all positions).  If you want to knock people off the LOS it's about the lower body, not the upper.  That is why you don't stress the shit out of it.

I also have a copy of Barwis' Michigan workouts and bench press is definitely part of the plan.

08/08/2014 - 10:18pm Three weeks is a lot of time.

Three weeks is a lot of time.  I have nine practices left before our first game.  I have no idea who my two DT's are, who my OLB's are, I have no idea who the hell is going to play either corner.  Our QB competition is to close to call, only one guy on the OL is a lock to start.  Oh and we are a top five ranked team, a lot of people think we can win a state title.

However, you have just made me start to panick, so tomorrow to start practice I am going to run around waving my hands screaming "we're all going to die, we're all going to die"  Also, we're just going to cancel the season.  Thanks for you wisdom.

06/23/2014 - 7:08pm I'll be honest with you.  In

I'll be honest with you.  In the last eight years I have never had a kid quit playing football and play soccer.  I've had them quit to play basketball, hockey, baseball, lacrosse and even one for show choir, but never soccer.

Would be curious to hear what other coaches have had happen.

06/19/2014 - 6:23pm Honestly

I have no idea why you even come back here.  I hate how most of the commenters think they know anything about coaching football or just football in general.  I would love to post more, but there are wayyyyyyyyyyy to many dipshits that have no clue that will attack you for your opinion.  An opinion that is based on years of experience, actually coaching football.  I hate that most of the posters think actual football is like a video game.  This game is fucking hard, just because a kid was good in high school does not mean that he will be good in college; there are just to many variables that go into everything.  I have read about an 1/8 of a UFR and said to myself "what the fuck is this guy talking about"  and I will never read one again.  Some days I hate that I read this blog and that causes me to hate myself a little bit.

I appreciate the work you do trying to educate some of the fans here.  I have no idea why you do it, but it is admirable.  I also appreciate the work that Magnus does and enjoy reading his blog.

04/27/2014 - 10:18pm One thing that is kind of

One thing that is kind of cool about them doing things a little different is that it keeps us book readers guessing as well.  I think it is smart on their part.

04/13/2014 - 1:47pm That position often forced
That position often forced him to cover slot recievers too, which is not good. Solid defenses are built up the middle.  Therefore putting your best defensive player in the middle is not a bad idea.  It is also not just about Jake Ryan.  It is about making the entire defense better.  If we play solid defense and win 10 games, I don't care if Ryan is third string waterboy.
03/26/2014 - 5:05pm You are correct about Tall

You are correct about Tall and I think he was a good coach.  He was replaced by Hoke and Mattison, who are two very well respected defensive line coaches with a ton of experience.  I think this is the learning curve you are talking about and I agree with you that there is one.

Experienced coaches do stay on one side of the ball, but younger coaches ofter flip for a few years.  They do this for a couple of reasons and I'll use a coach with a defensive background as an example.  If they have to go coach offense, it forces them to understand how offenses truely work.  They can then use their defensive knowledge to attack opposing defenses because they know where the weak points are.

Yes, I know there is more than taking proper steps involved in playing football.  It was just a simple example of a very important part of playing football.

03/25/2014 - 11:56pm You might want to check on

You might want to check on who made the absolute statement first and yeah they can.  All coaching is it teaching.  If you can teach a linebacker to take his proper steps, why can't you teach a wide reciever too?  If you can teach a linebacker to take on a block, why can't you teach a corner too?

What do I know though, I've only coached like seven positions.

03/25/2014 - 11:26pm Umm, no.  Good coaches can

Umm, no.  Good coaches can coach any position on the field.  At the end of the day technique, drills and responsibilities can be learned pretty quickly.  You do not have to play a position to coach it.  Greg Mattison played offense in college and he was even hired by an NFL team to coach linebackers even though he had never coached them before.

03/07/2014 - 5:59pm It's a defensive call.

It's a defensive call.
