Hypotehical CC: Chip Kelly

Submitted by brewandbluesaturdays on

Let me preface this, with a backdrop. I am sitting in my office, listening to SVP & Russillo and Scott was talking to Chris Mortensen about the Florida job and Chip Kelly's name got brought up along w/ Harbaugh. They both stated that they think Harbaugh is an NFL guy, but they see Chip as just a coach. It doesn't matter where to him.

It got me thinking, if Harbaugh were to say "no thanks", and money wasn't a concern, should Michigan consider Chip Kelly? Does anyone think there's a chance a large enough check would get him to jettison the Eagles for Ann Arbor? Also, even if he did want to come would the fear of losing him to the NFL shortly thereafter be a concern?

I personally would love the shift to a Chip Kelly style offense vs. what we see now and I think it would be a home run of a hire. I understand it'd be a complete transition in styles but I believe it would play dividends in the long run.

EDIT: I don't think this is a remote possibility, it was being discussed that maybe he would consider the jump back to college - just curious what the board thought about this hypothetical.

I would figure there would be more discussion.  I can read the original post and know that he isn't suggesting Kelly as the new coach, but a topic of discussion given where Kelly is coming from and the style of coach he is.  Honestly, I think you all are being to hard on the OP for this...its a legit topic for discussion given the different choices of new coaches out there.  EDIT:  Its a lot like asking your friends, "What would you do if you won the lottery?"  Of course no one ever expects to win the lottery, but what would you do if you did?

as a hypothetical, this is a great hypothetical.

It is a conjecture without a strong base of evidence to support it. Therefore, it is a fantastic example of a hypothetical statement.

As an Eagles fan, I have read A LOT about Chip Kelly, and everything I read leads me to believe that there is NO WAY he takes a college job again for the near future.

For one, he has complete control in Philadelphia. The roster is his to shape as he wishes (ex. DeSean getting cut), with the rest of the Eagles' organization helping him to execute his plan. Coaches work their entire lives for that amount of power.

Second, I've read that he doesn't like recruiting. What he enjoys about football is scheming, watching film, etc. Running around the country to convince kids that they should play for him was an aspect of the college scene that he liked the least.

Third, he just got the Philadelphia. There's no way he is jumping so quickly for a college situation that is precarious at best.

It just isn't happening.

Full disclsoure -- Eagles fan here.

There are hypotheticals that merit discussion because there's a modicum of possibility they could become reality.  Chip Kelly to Michigan has no basis in reality.

I know the OP is taking some heat.  In this instance, it's really warranted.  First, the post is not based on any legitimate source  Second, it's insulting to Eagles fans, who for the most part, are over-the-moon with Kelly.  Philadelphia, as a city, as a fanbase, as an ownership, has welcomed and embraced Kelly with open arms.

Third, most importnantly, I think we embarass ourselves as Michigan fans when we write delusional things like -- "CC: Chip Kelly."  If a Buckeye, Spartan, Domer, etc. were to read this thread, imho, they would be completely justified in mocking us as having completely lost our grip on reality.

I don't like giving my rivals ammo to mock me.  Therefore, I really do not like this post at all.

My grip on reality is completely fine.

I think I laid it out there clearly that I didn't think it was possible and that the conversation on air got me wondering if it was something Michigan would consider if possible.

I also tried to make the point to leave more than 1 topic of conversatrion.

ie.) NFL guy who if he came would maybe want to jump back - example: Harbaugh

2.) Spread guy with different philosophy than current staff example: Mullen or the beloved Stit

By no means was I trying to offend Eagles fan and if you were legitimately offended by this, maybe you take Eagles football a little too seriously.

There are probably certain aspects of the college game that Kelly misses now that he’s 11 games into his NFL career. But recruiting is not one of them.

Kelly was asked about how he, personally, is holding up going into the bye. And he made it clear that he prefers the NFL calendar to the college calendar.

"My schedule, the day the season was over, was a lot worse than my schedule here because you're planes, trains and automobiles recruiting from Sunday night until Friday afternoon and hustling back and practicing, getting a practice in Friday afternoon, practice Saturday, practice Sunday, get back on a plane and fly around the country chasing down recruits," he said.

"Maybe a misconception is when you're a college coach and the last game is done and then the bowl game comes, you don't have a month off. I would argue my schedule was more hectic from a recruiting standpoint than it was here. So I'm looking forward to being in the office every day and watching tape. That is the fun part of our job."

Thank you for finding that article. It made me really happy when I read it.

EDIT: I should clarify that this was the article that I had read that I mentioned in my post. I was really happy when I read it the first time through because it gave me confidence that Kelly will be in Philly for awhile.

I can't find it now, but I'm pretty sure that Kelly had a news conference while he was at Oregon in which he was asked about coaching in the NFL one day.  He very honestly said that NFL coaching is the highest level of his profession and it's something that he'd consider one day.

I'm rarely "he's not coming" guy, since who knows, but Kelly's not coming.

This isn't really that much more ridiculous than Dan Mullen and a bunch of other candidates who are brought up here as legitimate candidates.

Does it matter if there's a 1% chance or a 0.1% chance -  Either way, it's a pipe dream.

Worth entertaining if a guy has a Michigan connection (e.g., Miles, Harbaugh) but otherwise the aspirational CC threads are all a bit nutty.

So: CC Saban and CC Sumlin and CC Mullen and CC Belichek away if that's your thing. I'll be over here weighing realistic non-Harbaugh options like Teryl Austin, Tom Herman, and Kirby Smart.

Up Next - If we hired Saban away from Alabama, would he keep Lane Kiffin as OC and would Tom Brady be the QB coach?  Discuss!

Any number of things are technically possible.  That does not mean that they are thread worthy.

these threads must stop...there's a better chance Vince Lombardi coaches this team than some of the nonsense that's been posted the last lonth

The LOL's just keep on coming.  Of course we would take Chip Kelly in a heartbeat. Personally, I would take Kelly over Harbaugh (and that's even coming from an Eagles fan). He's one of the brighest minds in all of football.

I was originally lukewarm on Chip to the Eagles, because I thought he was an uptempo, zone-read purist that was going flame out in the NFL like Rich Rod in the Big Ten. The difference is that Chip didnt show up and try to force Nick Foles to run his Oregon offense. Instead he took his understanding of offense and designed a completely different look based around the players that he had. While I would be loath to hire another RR-style spread purist (and the 3-4 year transition) that would entail, but I would take Chip Kelly all day, every day.

Unfortunately, Chip Kelly is not going anywhere.

Why not bring up Jon Gruden while we're at it?  There isn't even a .001% chance Kelly is going to leave the Eagles this soon after taking the job after having a highly successful tenure at a top program like Oregon.  I don't think these head coaching candidate discussions are worthwhile at all unless there's at least a snowball's chance in hell he'd take the job.

In my experience, few people will actually consider and discuss hypotheticals here.  There will be some mocking, and people saying "this isn't going to happen" and very little in terms of actually answering your question(s).
