Was Bo Wrong or Right?
Pulled from Bo's Lasting Lessons:
Bo Schembechler
John U. Bacon
"I remember one time we were scouting a high school player here in Michigan, but I couldn't take my eyes off of his head coach. The guy was just standing there on the sidelines , his arms folded, with no clipboard, no headset. Nothing! And he'd always stand twenty yards away from everyone else. If their opponents had the ball down by his 10-yard line -which seemed to happen a lot-he'd be standing out by the 50. His poor assistants-and why they worked for this guy is a mystery to me-had to keep running back and forth to him just to let him know what they were doing.
I couldn't believe it! Honestly, what the hell is that? Why are they paying that guy? Why does he even show up for the games? Needless to say, his team was awful-undisciplined, unfocused, uninspired. But what would you expect, with no leader?"
______
I say he was right and this is why our current Michigan team is what they are and what they will continue to be until a leader is brought to give direction to a seemingly lost program.

Those two items are unrelated when it comes to job performance. Plenty of good people are not good at their jobs.

And what has the plethora of 4 and 5 stars accomplished? Oh ya, I forgot, every player must be a redshirt senior before they're even capable of performing up to a high level. We turn 5 stars into 3 stars and Dantonio turns 3 stars into 5 stars.

Why would Brady the line coach need a headset?
October 18th, 2014 at 4:53 PM ^
October 18th, 2014 at 5:34 PM ^
Look, I don't want to imply that Brady should remain Michigan's coach. We need a great coach, and Brady isn't one. He should be at a program like Purdue, or maybe an American Conference school, that has lower expectations and where his ability to attract recruits might make a difference.
But I think the headset thing is a red herring because it's based on speculation. We have no evidence at all as to whether Brady'd be a better coach with a headset. Maybe he would. Maybe it'd be more of the same.
I doubt we disagree about the important conclusion here, namely, that Brady hasn't been a very effective head coach on gameday since 2011.
Gotta say, though, that Brady is also a stubborn fellow who acts like a dick when asked about why he doesn't wear one, or when asked about his players' health, or anything else that is actually important or relevant. The fact that he thinks he's above explaining why he does things the way he does them does not help his reputation.

That you either don't like the explanation or just flat ignore him, really isn't his problem. But yeah, good for you sneaking in the Red Herring after disavowing the Red Herring.

People who are sick of hearing about Hoke not wearing a headset.
October 18th, 2014 at 3:08 PM ^
If people are sick of hearing about the headset issue, I have a solution!
Fire him already for the poor performance and non-existent player development over the last four years.
October 18th, 2014 at 1:23 PM ^
And there is a crowd of people around him - the grad assistant or whoever with the headset in, relaying info to hoke
Whoever hoke gets a headset from when he wants to put one on
And although I haven't seen many games, and paid less attention, I think he does move at least done up & down the sideline
So 1 partially true, 1 unkwon, and the rest definitely untrue

Those were cut way down in 2011
That's usually attributed to discipline,

Just waiting for people to start quoting these like bible verses at this point.

“The one surefire way to get me not to hire you is to send me your resume, especially if you've already got a good job. I won't be interested, because in a couple years, you'll be doing the same thing to me that you're doing to your current boss: looking for a better deal.”

As much as I respect Bo, he choked away so many bowl games (rose bowls especially). Looking backl every year he would lose a game Michigan had no business losing and kill our odds for a national title too. He would get crucified in the media for it and be Michigan's version of Cooper in that he couldn't win the BOWL game (rather than the UM-OSU game).
Maybe it's me being a new generation Michigan fan brought up in the BCS age, but I don't get the statue worthy hype around the man... Why not build a statue for Yost or Crisler then? They won nat'l titles.

So you're saying national titles don't matter?

October 18th, 2014 at 2:03 PM ^
Did you ever watch the documentery on BTN about the one tied UM-OSU game (Tiebreaker I think)? It sure didn't seem like the players thought of the game as just an "exhibition" judging by the way they were obviously pissed at the OSU players who ended up going and won the Rose Bowl.
October 18th, 2014 at 2:26 PM ^
You're absolutely right about the importance of the game, but as for your last half-sentence I had such a completely different take that I wonder if we watched the same show. The most striking thing about that documentary for me was how much respect there was between the two sets of players. They were pissed at the conference and at certain athletic directors, but at the OSU players? Nothing but respect and the good-natured kidding that comes from it.

Where are these Hoke supporters you speak of? No one negged you because they like Hoke. They just didn't need a quote from Bo to justify their dislike of Hoke.
October 18th, 2014 at 6:18 PM ^
There are still Hoke supporters on here. They keep moving the goalposts on what year will be the make or break year. They said last year was the breakout season, then when the season started becoming a nightmare they shifted their focus to 2014. By Minnesota (if not Utah) they were already pointing to 2015. Hoke will never have enough time for some of these people.
October 18th, 2014 at 8:00 PM ^
I don't think that's where the vast majority of the disagreement comes from, though. I think there are people out there who think threads like this cross the line from "reasonable football related criticism" to "let's tar and feather a man because he lost too many games".
The vindictivness has gone over the top. Hoke's not an idiot. Hoke can coach. Hoke has failed at Michigan. All three of those are true; the guy doesn't have to be the worst coach Bo ever saw two point oh to justify wanting him gone.
October 18th, 2014 at 1:44 PM ^
It think it is unfair to compare Hoke to the other guy Bo was talking about in JUB's book. The other guy was just standing there with his arms folded. If he was just standing there clapping his hands then we have a thread!!
October 18th, 2014 at 1:43 PM ^
I think headsets and winning are mutually exclusive.....but thats just me.
October 18th, 2014 at 2:55 PM ^
The headset issue is a symbol of what is playing out on the field. It adds to the perception that Hoke is totally detached from the game plan and the game itself. When you look at the results on the field, the lack of discipline, the inability to execute, and game management over the last four years it all fits together.
It's just another symptom of the disease!
