Funchess: "Wins and Losses just a 'Statistic'"

Submitted by BlueBarron on

I'm not really sure what to think of this but it's not very re-assuring.

*sigh*

I am sure he is sarcastically channeling some Hokeisms that he must have to hear over and over again non-stop if the repetitive presser nonsense is any indication of his verbal skills.

It does sound all that inspiring, to be sure, and while technically correct it seems to ignore that this is pretty much the only one a lot of people look at when it comes to any sort of final analysis, but yeah, I won't get too irritated with a college WR who is trying to wade through what must be a difficult situation personally and for the team.

EDIT: Good catch, and fixed. I may not be 100% sober right now.

Actions reflect Leadership..

Hoke is a Ho-Hum who gives a fuck kind of coach..  I seriously don't know how anyone could ever get fired up to play for him..

At this point im hoping most of our key players stick around for the next coach so we don't go into full rebuild mode next year if we get a big time coach

Maybe he was taken out of context? What if the question was "do you need to win next week for Coach Hoke to keep his job?" or "Will this season be a failure if you don't win next week?" Without the context, I'll reserve judgment.

Why? If Saban, Bo, Dantonio or Meyer were your coach they wouldn't care. They would never ever allow a player to have that attitude. It's why we suck. Walking back to the huddle being down in a game and spewing this shit.

I personally have yet to read the context of the statement and therefore won't pile onto our best current player. I know it's en vogue on MGoBlog now to completely disrespect both coaches AND players for any reason, but I choose to take a higher ground on that. It's why I don't make fat jokes about Hoke, despite the popularity of said jokes. Do I wish the answer was immediately "we need to win every game"? Yes. Does that make me think less of Devin WITHOUT CONTEXT? No.

That's the culture Hoke has built in Ann Arbor, folks. Anyone on a team like Alabama or OSU sputters crap like this, and their asses are thrown on the practice squad right after the press conference. Its acceptance of mediocrity. I hope you're comfortable with your moral victories, Funchess.

This team is lost. The season is lost. The whole program is a tire fire right now.

Yes, this reflects Hoke.  My son's high school team played a game this afternoon because of torrential rains last night.  The team came out flat in the first half and played poorly.  The coach electrified them at half time and they came out and knocked the socks off the other team to win in a blow-out.  Why does this never happen with a Hoke-led Michigan team?  Because its like youth sports -- participation is what matters.  And they are great kids.  We think we're a good team despite the record...

Stop. These are the players that are carrying out Hoke and co's orders. Just because Funch is attempting to keep his head up and still fight on for the rest of the year doesnt mean you need to attack him. I'm pissed off just like everyone else but don't have a double standard. Week 1 he's minitron. Now he's stupid? One off comment doesn't define him. Enough of this. If you wanna attack someone attack Hoke, DB or the staff. Not the players. No.

I don't think Devin is a poet philosopher.  I wouldn't read much into it.  He's pissed, hell we're all pissed.

they are just a statistic. Will anyone honestly care in a 100 years whether we beat Rutgers or not? My answer is no. Don't believe me? Does anyone honestly care how we did in the 1914? how about 1970 even? the answer is no. What we should all care about is whether our coach prepares our player's to be honorable and productive members of society. That statistic means a hell of a lot more to me then wins and losses, and Hoke is the person to prepare our player's for just such a life. Does Hoke deserve to be the coach based solely on wins and losses? probably not. But he does deserve to continue being our HC due to his improvement of the lives of the men who wear the winged helmet. As I mentioned in another thread, the famous saying around here is that "we would prefer to lose the right way than win the wrong way". that's what were seeing. I for one am glad Hoke is our coach and don't give a damn about whether he wins or not as long as prepares our guys for being successful and productive members of society.

First you argue that wins and losses don't matter to defend a players attitude, then you argue that they do matter when it comes to evaluating the coaches.

Kind of like a soccer mom that doesn't want an official score kept of the game all the while keeping a score pad in her purse to berate the coach when the kids aren't around.

My point is that in the grand scheme of things, what makes a great coach is the positive influence he has on his player's and not the W/L record. If people want to go solely on the results on teh field, then sure Hoke should go. Can't disagree with that. But if that's what were using to judge a coach then why not cheat and using everything in our power to win. Let's stop become Alabama/ OleMiss/LSU/ USC. I on the other hand judge the true value of a coach on the positive influence he has over his players, something Brady definitely does very well. So in that context, I think he's  great coach as he does a great job of preparing our player's to become great people. That's what a great coach is to me. So while Hoke may not get the job done inside the lines, he does a much better job outside of them, which to me is what really counts.

If that's what you want then we shouldn't even have a football team. Good football teams do not produce all nice guys. Football players are usually cocky assholes. That's just the way it is. That cocky attitude is there in the classroom all the way to the football field. We don't have that. We need that.

I don't go to Michigan Stadium to watch nice guys go 7-6 every year and neither does anyone else.

You want a team filled with Ray Rice's, Adrian Peterson's, Ritchie Icognito's, Aaron Hernandez and Pacman Jone's. Nothing wrong with that, as long as you can admit it. I don't want those types of guys representing the University of Michigan but if nothing but Win's and Losses matter than sure let's go recruit them and become the Alabama of the North. But if that's the tact we're going to take we shouldn't act like we're better than anyone else. I personally, want something different for U of M football. Does my view come with a few more losses? Yeah absolutely, but at least i know everyone who don's the winged helmet is deserving of respect. Hoke, while not great between the lines, at least makes sure that we can be proud of everyone single one of his players and for that reason I am glad he is our coach.

Has Hoke been able to positively influence the life of every person who has suited up for him? NO. but I bet if you were you compare his off field successes with regards to the players to those of Saban, Meyer, Carroll, or Dantonio, then Hoke win's that hands down. Obviously Hoke isn't going to be able to reach every member of the team, but on the whole, he'll be a whole lot better than those other coach's I just mentioned.

No. Stop putting words in my mouth. You can be a cocky asshole without being a murderer or criminal.

But just saying that mostly everyone else does not agree with what you want. If they did then we wouldn't have a 100,000 seat stadium.

the two comments I was responding to have been deleted by the Mods--as have all of those from that poster.  So I was not commenting on anything you posted.  I get why it may have looked so, but the context should have suggested otherwise, I think.  We can try to be friends again.

For all I know, you may have been responding to our deleted poster and not me--but I don't think so.
