Coaching search crowdsourcing

Submitted by Ben Mathis-Lilley on

Let's see if we can make this work. I'll post potential coaching candidates, one per reply to the OP. Upvote/downvote based on whether you would want them to be coach (not feasibility). Reply to the post with the coach's name to discuss that person.

Ed Orgeron literally is the Brady Hoke of the West. They are so similar that I'm pretty sure Brady Hoke was moonlighting two jobs this entire time working at Michigan and at USC.

Think about it. Both are former D-Line coaches who have proven to be great recruiters, very passionate about their dream jobs (Michigan and USC) but have had problems developing talent, and made embarrasements of themselves and their schools whenever they were given the keys to run a major proram.

Notice how nobody has been rushing to Orgeron's doorstep since USC turned him down? Yea their is a reason to that.

So sick of the Harbaugh crap, it's not happening. Neither is Les Miles - which is good because it's a terrible idea. No legit, current BCS/Power5/whateverit'scalled head coach is coming here either. Who's left? Unproven guys. Chuck Martin is the answer.

Jim Mora, Jr.? Bronco Mendanhall?

Edit: and now for something completely different (on my mind because the WWL keeps pushing Yale/Army for reasons I don't understand): Tim Murphy. He's made Harvard one of the most consistently good programs in FCS, his name popped up for the PSU job, he was sucesful at Chincinnati before moving to Harvard to be closer to his ailing mother.

Mendenhall a fairly strict Mormon, he'd be a misfit cultural fit here I think and I doubt he'll leave BYU.

Jim Mora Jr. Turned down Texas and Washington last year because UCLA primed for a HUGE year. Once it's over I can see him getting his head turned by a situation in which the fans will actually care and the (hopefully new) AD isn't a buffoon.

The FannMan

He is an English Lab, but is only two so will be around for the next 10 to 12 years.

He is named after Charles Woodson, thus making him a Michigan Man.

I have never seen him wear a heat set.

He will work for kibble.

Kids love him so he will dominate at recruiting.

He hasn't shat on the rug for at least 18 months - a clear area of improvement.

He is also very sensative if someone is not feeling well or injured.

I can promise that his first call will be to BiSB's Golden Retriever.  I am not sure whether BiSB's dog will want to be OC or DC, but the job is his (or hers).

for a head coach to raise this program from the ashes requires a man with an attitude and a true belief that toughness and Michigan are synonomous, the only possible answer is Jim Harbaugh.

Hoke is a softie and the team reflects it on the field.  We need a hard-nosed 'dick' of a coach and Harbaugh is that guy.

I do it? I love Michigan football and understand recruiting the locals. Kids who actually understand the big ten and the rivalries. Plus I will even wear a headset. Is making players run sprints until they drop or puke illegal for missed plays. Is grabing a face mask and giving them a piece of your mind illegal? If not I'm your man! Accountability! Accountability! Accountability! Screw this "this is Michigan"bullcrap

Dave Doroen...

I know a lot of people will say no because he had a bad first season at NC State but I bet he gets them to a bowl this year and he only improved upon what Kill had built at NIU.

Then again... last coaching search I was saying we should give Sarkisian a look and everyone said I was crazy... I guess USC didn't.

But I think there are plenty of worse candidates.  Brandon derisively dismissed the idea because Gruden had "not coached in years"....but it seems laughable that Hoke would get chosen over him.

Maybe Gruden won't come, but it's worth reaching out.  The guy would kill in recruiting, would give a ton of credibility, and has an old-school background (defense-first teams in TB, West coast offense disciple) that is married to innovation (studied Chip Kelly's offense, good with qb's).  There are certainly negatives, but I'd be willing to give it a shot if we miss out on the Harbaughs, etc.

Why would someone like Kirby Smart leave Alabama? All he has to do is stay and coach NFL caliber player after player until Saban retires and he's the new king of the most talent laden region of the country.

Obviously we all would love to see either Harbaugh come to AA, I just don't see it. Butch Jones already has Tennessee competitive and he can recruit. He is raising that program back up. He could do it here.

Rob Chudzinski? Offensive guy, young, loads of college experience, has been a coordinator, and seems super energetic. From Toledo, so I got to think he knows the area. Could be hired right away after the season.

I'm not smart enough to make a pick but I'd like to see these guys interviewed in no particular order...

Dave Doeren- 41 years old. Former Wisc DC, Former NIU HC (2 MAC titles, Orange Bowl Appearance, GoDaddy Bowl), Current NC State HC making $1.9M/yr

Craig Bohl- 56 years old.  Former LB Coach at Nebraska and DC at Nebraska. Built NDSU into FCS powerhouse that won 3 FCS championships and beat defending Big12 Champion Kan St (same team that pummelled Michigan in bowl game).  Current HC at Wyoming.

Jack Del Rio- 51 years old.  Former DC at Carolina Panthers, Current Denver DC.  Former HC Jacksonville Jaguars.  Reportedly Accepted USC headcoaching position but backed out when announced before Jacksonville played playoff game (Boom! Miles'd).

Give me a good plan and I'll donate $5,000 for a Harbaugh to Michigan campaign.  Fuck it.  T-shirts, website, sit-ins?  I don't care.  I'm ready to throw money at it hard.  Better than models and bottles at the club.

Seriously.  Sell me on a plan and I will fund it.

Surprised this name hasn't come up much, but I've thought about it quite a bit: Craig Bohl out of Wyoming.

Relative unknown, and his team did just get demolished by MSU, but that dynasty he built out at North Dakota State is incredibly impressive. In fact, I'd argue its more impressive than what Saban has accomplished at Bama. 3 straight national titles, and his former team is likely making it #4 this year. He is a proven winner, and these days, that's good enough for me. I bet he'd jump at the chance to come here.

He's not a sexy hire, but maybe that's not what we need. We just need someone that can win football games, develop talent, and not feed this fanbase a bunch of bullshit about how great we are because of our tradition. No one knew who the hell Jim Tressel was when he came to OSU from Youngstown State. That all worked out pretty well for them, right?
