OT: What Phone Do You Have / Want?

Submitted by Darker Blue on July 4th, 2023 at 11:30 AM

So I think the wife and I are going to finally upgrade our phones. Currently I have a Motorola G Stylus 5G and she has a Note 9. As you can see state of the art isn't necessary.

I'm looking at a Pixel 7 pro. She wants an S23. I actually really would like to get the Samsung fold 4 but I'm clumsy as fuck and would break it.

What phones are you guys rocking? What phone would you get if you were upgrading ?

I was a happy Samsung Android guy for years.  Wife was iPhone because it was easiest to use.  I spent so much time doing IT support for her, I gave up and switched to iPhone so I could just clone what I was doing on her phone.  We are now both on iPhone 14.  I’m pretty sure iPhone 14 has the radio capabilities to access some of the new 5G spectrum Verizon and others are turning up.  I think the Michigan Stadium game day service issues will improve this Fall.  FYI…I’m a Verizon customer.

Years ago I was out in LA with my daughter.   We were driving along Santa Monica Blvd when I noticed a bunch of people camping out in front of a store front.   I told my daughter that they must be in line for some concert tickets.   Nope.  She informed me that the new Apple 4( 3? 6?) was coming out tomorrow.

I vowed that day never to own an Apple phone and am gratified that such a progressive group as MGoBoarders seem to prefer Android over Apple.

I'd never stand in line for one, but I like my iphone. And--despite being an old Linux/Unix/router guy--Apple products in general.

They certainly have their flaws and you tend to pay a premium for them, but I like them and I've gotten good value out of them. I've gotten much more life out of my Macbooks then I ever did out of allegedly business-class Windows laptops.

Although--and I know this dates me--I do miss the Blackberry keyboard.

I have an iPhone 12 Pro Max that I just finished paying off over the 3-year monthly deal.  My wife had the same until a few weeks ago when we took advantage of the $1000 credit from Verizon to upgrade.  She now has an iPhone 14 Pro Max with 256GB memory and the $1000 nearly covered the cost of the phone.  We are paying like $5/month more on our bill for the new phone.  Thinking I might do the same upgrade if they're still running the deal.

We both like iPhones.  Nearly the entire extended family has iPhones.  We own AAPL stock as well so we might as well buy the products.

Comment to peep this thread for later.  Have a Galaxy Note 5, and while it was fine, it was also refurbished when I got it 5 years ago and right now it's at the point where its battery has about as much capacity as my minpin's bladder.  So I do eventually need to upgrade but I'm also frugal to a fault.

I got a53 because Linus Tech thought it a good midrange phone. The processing speed is very slow but other than that it is fine. I really like that it still has an SD card because I like to put recordings of games on my phone and watch film somewhere other than my office. I don't want to be constantly downloading that from the cloud.

Buy one model older than latest. Check your provider or Amazon for refurbished or returned phones. They are tested better than factory new and a real bargain--cheap enough to move along if you have regrets.

Pixel 7. Rest has S22/A51 and iPhone 11.

I am happy with the PIxel. All the goodness of Google. And will be supported for a few years.

Wife is happy with Samsungs.

Would love to get a Sony Xperia Pro of 1. But they are too costly and not supported well by Sony.

I’ve got a second generation iPhone SE. I chose it specifically because:

1) it’s small (so it fits easily in all my pockets as well as my tiny child-like hands);

2) Its camera is acceptable

3) it was the cheapest iPhone available

I’m not sure I could ever have anything other than an iPhone. They seem to be the easiest to use. I had an android for my work phone and I hated that thing. Apple products seem so much smoother. To each their own though.

I've got a Pixel 6 and really like it, so I assume the Pixel 7 is just an iterative improvement on that experience.  As always, if you like being in the Apple ecosystem then go for an iPhone but otherwise the Google and Samsung offerings tend to be great.  Going one generation back from the cutting edge sometimes can be a nice place for a deal, especially if they made a big leap recently in terms of some feature.

I started getting iPhones because I wanted all my stuff in the Apple ecosystem so it would all sync together and work. That was 14 years ago and I'm still rocking Apple because I know how they work and they're reliable, I don't care about who has the best camera or whatever, I just want a working phone. Currently I have a 14 Pro Max. I usually upgrade every 3-5 years as well.

Moto G7 Power. Cheap, long battery life, does what I need it to. My first mobile phone, to replace the phone hard-wired in my car, was a Qualcomm brick, much more convenient than a bag phone, and much smaller than the iconic Motorola brick. But still not exactly pocket sized

I have an older iPhone which I hate, counting down the days until I can get another Android. The fold looks cool so might get that if it fits my budget (which is cheap as possible).

Get the Pixel 7 Pro -- phenomenal phone, does way more things than the iPhone, does them way better and is half the price. Significantly better camera too, and obviously Google's AI is far superior to Apple's near non-existent AI.

I have the Pixel 7 Pro.  I run/own my own small business, and use Google's app interfaces for quite a bit of what we do (scheduling/navigating, etc.).  Car connectivity is absolutely a must and Android Auto is phenomenal - especially the new tiled version.

In my studio I work mostly off of an iMac Desktop machine (albeit a very nice one), so I'm definitely also a fan of Apple products.  We also have a very expensive render farm PC machine that we use.  I'm a fan of using the best tool for the job, I guess.  I couldn't care less about the brand if it's going to help my business, help my peace of mind, help my family life off the clock.

That said, Pixel phones are better actual, daily use phones.  In my estimation, time is very much money, and for years Apple just got by with the fact that the iPhone was good looking, and had the best camera.  Android phones just kept innovating, kept adding useful features - that I deem modern luxuries - that really highlight the single best feature a phone should add to your life - helpful intuition.  The iPhone just kept skating by, releasing non-updated versions that really didn't do much to advance their phone, while Google, Samsung, etc. kept innovating until they had surpassed Apple's phone.  Then they went to work on their camera.  Now I think my Pixel 7 Pro has as good, or better video and camera lens than the iPhone.  If you want the most beautiful OBJECT - get the iPhone.  Sure.  But they do not make the best phones anymore, by a fairly clear margin.

The iPhone also uses such out-of-date texting tech that Google finally went public, pleading with them to modernize and come to terms with the current tech.

Galaxy S10.

The thing does exactly what the S23 does minus a better camera.

I used to be ''that guy'' that would get the latest and greatest cell phones as they were released, but then started to realized it's all a scam.

If you can get on the internet, take good photos and videos and make phone calls. You are good to go.

I have a Pixel 7. It's my third Pixel phone.

I'm happy with it. Probably use about 40% of the bells and whistles that google offers with it (just a guess about the percent).

I had a Pixel 6 which was working just fine, and Verizon had an upgrade offer for a Pixel 7 for $5/month with a 3 year contract. I added some GBs to 256 and the price increased to $7/month. My only issue with the Pixel 6 was that it had 128 GB. Sooner or later I would need an upgrade because of that.

I've had Verizon for a very long time so locking into a 3 year contract doesn't bother me.

Finally I had gotten some texts from Verizon about a senior discount of $5/month starting at age 55.

I got the discount. So the new phone ended up costing me $2 extra per month.

S23.  Have always stayed with the Galaxy S-series.  This one, I moved over a line and got the phone for free with a trade in of another Galax S Series.  Traded in an old S7 that's been sitting in a drawer for a few years.  Did the same thing with kids/wife.  They all have S22's that we upgraded w/trade ins.  Got rid of 2 S9s and an s10.  Like them all.  My S23, everyone swears the pics are coming from a "real" camera.  I have friends with brand new iPhones, who all ask me to take the pics at events because it's so much better than theirs.

That's all I have...
