OT: Wings trade Jensen to Caps
Wings start off their trade deadline activities today. Traded Jensen and a 2019 5th round pick to the Caps in exchange for 2020 2nd rounder and Madison Bowey.
Got reasonable value for a rental player IMHO. Should be interesting to see if Howard and Nyquist find new homes. What do you expect to get in return for those guys?

I see the others have yet to take our offer of Ken Holland for 6 bucks and an open pack of breath mints.
February 22nd, 2019 at 4:03 PM ^
They wanted an unopened pack of breath mints.
February 22nd, 2019 at 4:15 PM ^
i heard it different. i heard they wanted some of those candy cigarettes that were mostly wax and we held out.
February 22nd, 2019 at 4:29 PM ^
Well shit. Wait ... do they make those anymore?
February 22nd, 2019 at 7:41 PM ^
Yes, they do.
I'm smoking one now
February 22nd, 2019 at 4:36 PM ^
No worries here. Yzerman's coming home!
February 22nd, 2019 at 4:02 PM ^
As far as the Red Wings go I just hope that Stevie comes home and Kenny Holland moves on. So get as much as you can in prospects or Draft picks .
February 22nd, 2019 at 4:03 PM ^
He’s the best young defenseman on the team. I guess we’re still tanking and not rebuilding ....
February 22nd, 2019 at 4:08 PM ^
A 28 year-old defenseman that has 2 goals on the season is considered the "best young defenseman on the team"? Do you watch the Wings?
February 22nd, 2019 at 4:14 PM ^
I thought he was near the end of his minor league career due to age so the RWs called him up. Good for him to find another landing spot.
February 22nd, 2019 at 4:17 PM ^
In all fairness, the context is Detroit's defensive group is extremely old. I would argue while we have Cholowski and Hronek up and coming, outside of that anyone remotely close in age to Jensen was Witkowski and DeKeyser (both 28).
Mike Green is 33, Kronwall 38, Ericsson 34, and Daley 35. Today's acquisition of Bowey brings some youthful talent to the mix at 23 but a project player.
With that said, Jensen still is an underrated aspect of Detroit's team this year. If you're only judging him by his offensive metrics, that would sorely miss the point -- Jensen is a defensive defenseman who has put up better numbers this year playing against better competition.
February 22nd, 2019 at 4:51 PM ^
I was with you until you said Jensen is a defensive defenseman. He is the exact opposite. He's a puck moving D man who can get involved in the offensive zone play. He's a solid 5th D man on a team, but the Wings need way more help than him. They are in a complete rebuild. Need to get rid of some truly terrible contracts over the next 4-5 years, and then they can start again.
February 22nd, 2019 at 4:18 PM ^
28 is nothing on the blue line. those guys are like ship barnacles. Jensen will still be clearing off the boards 15 years from now
February 22nd, 2019 at 4:26 PM ^
Yes, most of the games. And I played juniors in Canada.
He’s young in that he’s only been up with the Wings for 2.5 years and that 28 is the average age of an NHL player (27.7 years old). He’s got 5-8 years left so ... yea. Young.
I’d rather have a defenseman that knows how to play defense and doesnt get stuck watching the puck, leaving his man wide open, than a defensive liability who happens to score 15 goals a year. If goals is what you’re looking for out of a defenseman, you’re not doing it right. That’s what Ericsson was supposed to be, an “offense minded defenseman” and he’s trash. Worst defender on the team and shouldn’t be on an NHL roster, especially for $4+ million a year.
Jensen has 1 less goal than Ericsson and way more assists. He has one less goal than DeKeyser and more assists. In fact, stat wise, only Green has better stats on the year as far as defensemen, and Green is clearly the best defender on the team. So yea.
Do you even watch them? Did you ever play at a remotely high level? Because it doesn’t seem like it with that take.
February 22nd, 2019 at 4:38 PM ^
doc, where did you play up there?
February 22nd, 2019 at 4:39 PM ^
Weyburn Red Wings and Strathroy Rockets (Rockets don’t exist anymore I think)
February 22nd, 2019 at 4:43 PM ^
I'm thinking Medicine Hat
February 22nd, 2019 at 7:45 PM ^
Which is why we got a 2nd round pick for the guy. Im happy to unload anyone who will get a pick and a younger player in return. Let the defense be a sieve for the rest of the season. Lose for Hughes!
February 22nd, 2019 at 4:44 PM ^
Jensen is an UFA this summer and will be looking to get paid. The Wings won’t be able to re-sign him unless they over pay. They have enough bad contracts already. Based on that, it’s a good, smart trade.
February 22nd, 2019 at 4:55 PM ^
Well, you send good talent away when you have so many bad contracts and overpaid players that no else wants. Sucks to lose him.
February 23rd, 2019 at 9:50 AM ^
The Caps already signed him to a 4 year extension at 2.5 Mil per yer
February 22nd, 2019 at 4:10 PM ^
It may be wishful thinking, but I would hope a 1st for Nyquist now that Duchene is off the market (and presumably, Panarin is either off as well or an exorbitantly high asking price).
February 22nd, 2019 at 4:11 PM ^
Jimmy Howard will fetch at most one carton of unfiltered Camel cigarettes.
February 22nd, 2019 at 8:29 PM ^
You do realize he was in the All-Star game this year right?
February 22nd, 2019 at 4:12 PM ^
2nd rounder for either of them. Trade whoever you can.
February 22nd, 2019 at 4:16 PM ^
February 22nd, 2019 at 4:32 PM ^
Agreed but hate to see him go. Wings are gonna stink for quite a while until these crap contracts we have with 74 year old players end. Also have overpaid for average talent.
Ericsson is plain terrible, Kronwall is over the hill, DeKeyser is overpaid, so is Nyquist, Abby, Daley .....
February 22nd, 2019 at 4:56 PM ^
If someone took Daley, Ericsson, and Abby off our hands, I would make that team my second favorite*
*Not CHI, BOS, TOR, or COL
February 22nd, 2019 at 5:01 PM ^
Not sure that Nyquist is overpaid, at least this year. Certainly not a bargain but he's had a decent year. Now he may re-sign for slightly less but the Wings have much bigger problems than the Nyquist contract (e.g. everyone else you listed above).
February 22nd, 2019 at 9:00 PM ^
True but that many millions s for someone who is a 2nd or 3rd line player on better NHL teams?
There are teams with a smaller payroll far outplaying the Wings.
February 22nd, 2019 at 4:29 PM ^
I can't stand Holland and can't wait until he is gone, but that is not a bad return.
February 22nd, 2019 at 4:47 PM ^
Trader Ken strikes again!
The fact that he got a 2nd rounder for a 3-month rental of a third-pairing defenseman is damn impressive.
I fully expect him to get a 1st and a decent prospect for Gus, but I don't see Howard moving unless San Jose gets really desperate.
February 22nd, 2019 at 4:51 PM ^
I was on the fence about Jensen going or staying.
While the 2nd and a project player seems a good return, we all need to view this as one of the following two headlines:
The Detroit Red Wings today traded defenseman Nick Jensen and a 5th round pick to the Washington Capitals for defenseman Madison Bowey and a 2020 2nd round pick....
OR
Detroit Red Wings General Manager announced this afternoon that he has resigned pending unrestricted free agent defenseman Nick Jensen to a 5 year, $25 million dollar contract, with a full NTC for the first four full seasons.
If this is the choice - and it was. I'll take plan A.
February 22nd, 2019 at 4:56 PM ^
Why would he insult Jensen with such a low contract? DeKeyser got 5M. At that rate, Jensen should get about 7M from Holland. So yes, I choose plan A also.
February 22nd, 2019 at 5:03 PM ^
This is exactly right. In recent times, Holland has actually done at least decently on (a) draft picks, and (b) getting at least decent returns for players leaving. It's the acquisitions and more importantly the re-signings that have killed the Wings.
February 22nd, 2019 at 5:47 PM ^
Caps signed him to a 4 year 10 million extension today
February 22nd, 2019 at 4:55 PM ^
Getting a 2nd rounder for Jensen is pretty good. Especially because who knows how good the caps will be in 2020.
Jimmy should net the wings a third rounder or maybe a second if a team is trying to make a run and needs a goalie.
Nyquist? He's 29 and has 48 points in 60 games which is pretty good for him. Maybe a 1st and 4th? 2nd and 3rd?
I would like to see Daley and Vanek go as well. Get more kids up.
This pains me to say, but Kronwall should be traded too. Get what you can for him and let the younger defensemen move up. If the Wings have been floundering at any position for a while it's been defense since Lidstrom left.
February 22nd, 2019 at 5:15 PM ^
It's Kronwall's last year. I can't imagine getting much return for a literal 2 month rental. I know sentiment doesn't win games, but at this point, I'd love for him to retire a Wing.
February 23rd, 2019 at 12:58 AM ^
The only GM in the NHL who would trade for Kronwall right now already has him on his roster.
February 23rd, 2019 at 11:25 AM ^
I don’t know every team’s cap situation, but there may be a team that needs to hit the league minimum and could use the contract. This is why Holland traded Datsyuk to Arizona a couple years ago. It may not happen (probably won’t) but it could be an option.
February 22nd, 2019 at 5:52 PM ^
I would love to somehow fleece Colorado into trading away ottawas pick for nyquist and Howard and whoever else they want. Won't happen but would be nice considering how badly we need the number 1, 2 pick. The wings won't lose enough to get top 3
February 22nd, 2019 at 6:28 PM ^
They'll continue frustrating us with 3 and 4 goal third period comeback to pick up useless points. And then, when we emotionally reinvest in the game due to the excitement they will lose in OT. And get just enough points to stay out of the cellar. Gah.
February 22nd, 2019 at 6:42 PM ^
Yup exactly! The other thing too is we have a log of young talent and they aren't gonna wanna "tank"
February 23rd, 2019 at 12:59 AM ^
Agreed. This is why I hated that we re-signed Green. He makes us like 10 points better instead of being dead last.
February 22nd, 2019 at 7:10 PM ^
In case anyone here missed it, "Russian Five" documentary will be showing in select theaters in March around metro Detroit. March 21-28. Hoping I will be able to make a trip to the LP then to see it.

Garbage team with garbage management. Stevie Y can't get here soon enough!

This was a great trade by Holland. Traded 2-fifth round picks to get 2-second round picks.
